Gonzalez attempts to end Gumgate: "This was a runaway train that needed to be stopped."

This whole gum thing has GOT to be one of the most idiotic events I have seen given this much attention since the OJ trial. Why would someone even think that they could make money off previously chewed gum. Then, why would someone actually want to spend the money on this crap?? If someone wants to get rid of their money quickly, I'm ready to take it.

bcb, I don't want to sound like a dickhole here, but the guy selling the gum isn't keeping the money. Sure, he's an idiot and he's been in trouble with the law in the past, but at least he's not doing it to make a buck. He's helping out a high school sports program. He may have a hidden agenda, but the selling of the gum itself is going to a decent cause. The people buying the gum are another story. Unless they can write it off for tax purposes, they're just plain stupid. One of those singing mounted fish would be a better addition to the house than a chunk of chewed gum. Having said that, if you really want to make money in a hurry, I've heard they have this thing where you can stuff envelopes at home for "quik $$". Let me know if you're interested, I'll send you the number to call.

I'm a fan of oddball publicity stunts, probably from the years I spent combing the newswires as a newspaper copy editor. Anything that's so stupid it gets international press coverage is an achievement.
