"The NHL's Washington Capitals edged out the NFL's Cleveland Browns, to top the rankings in the study of 131 professional sports team web sites (MLB, MLS, NBA, NFL and NHL)." For the web usability junkies among us, every major North American sports team's website, as ranked by the experts at UMass. Maybe it's just me, but don't all these sites look the same? That is, loud, busy, and overstuff'd with info?

I find it funny that all of the MLB websites aren't given the same rank, considering the layout is the same for every single team, varying only in color scheme and team-specific information (Okay, sometimes the logo in the background is different).

At least the Capital's website is worth checking out. Though an owner choking a fan is a pretty entertaining reason to want and check out a game in person.

I believe that's the way the NBA's are as well, dirigible. And they do the same stupid shit where even if you go to say, www.dallasmavericks.com, you get redirected to www.nba.com/dal or whatever. Stupid stupid stupid.

Y'know, we spend a lot of time at work talking about usability for sites and applications we build. We must be using the word wrong, because we mean "usable" and online usability rankings tend to mean "suck less than a comparable site". I desperately miss the RedSox.com pre-MLB Stalinization. They were doing little things right, like giving out the media notes in a pdf for each game. That was a brilliant touch: it beat waiting for some crap AP wire story to rephrase the notes in worser English.

The old Leafs site was pretty alright, although a bit too Flashy. Now it's some generic, NHL.com network piece of crap.
