The University of North Dakota has switched from an offensive mascot to a merely lame and generic one: presenting your UND Fighting Hawks.

Maybe UND should have let sporting alumni bid for the naming rights to the team. Then they could have ended up as the Commodores or Barons.

Or the Toewsers.

Missed opportunity to be Bismarcks.

Also, scroll through the non-consideration list and be completely unsurprised by how frequently "Fighting Sioux" shows up.

Something strange in Dodgerland?

Wait...what? Les Miles is on the hot seat at LSU? Or are idiots just looking for a shiny new object?

When I was in high school the Lewisville Fighting Farmers always beat the crap out of us in football. Now that's a Fighting nickname.

UND fans should just call themselves the Nodaks until the school relents and makes it official. We kinda did that at UNT with the Mean Green, shedding the generic Eagles.

Les Miles is on the hot seat at LSU?

As always, the question that people should be asking but aren't is Who would be better? Is there anyone looking for a job right now that even conceivably might be an upgrade?

Oh.

Oh gods...

There was a ballot submitted for the AL MVP that had neither Donaldson (winner) or Trout (runner-up) in the #2 spot.

Nor the #3 finisher.

Nor the #4 finisher.

Nor the #5 finisher.

No, that person voted for the #6 finisher (Nelson Cruz) at #2.

Time to give Chris Assenheimer (Chronicle-Telegram in Cleveland) a concussion test...

Chris Assenheimer's response to being mocked for his 2nd place vote for Cruz.

For all those ripping me for Cruz over Trout. Cruz (.302, 44 HR, 93 RBIs). Trout (.299, 41 HR, 90 RBIs). #JustSayin

presenting your UND Fighting Hawks.

Just wait until the PETA people get hold of this. "Fighting Hawks" creates images of illegal bird fighting. Another consideration is that most species of hawk migrate south for the winter, so the UND hockey teams will suffer for lack of a mascot. Sounds like a bad choice all along. A friend of mine worked for a while near Minot, ND. He claimed there was a girl behind every tree there.

That was beautiful. Given that the writer grew up in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, it makes it even more poignant.

I am originally from Baton Rouge (and my folks still live there) and am an LSU fan, although did not go to school there. My impression is that a vocal portion of the fan base thinks that LSU should basically be in contention for the national championship every year on account of the fact that one can have a top-5 recruiting class just by getting the top in-state recruits, and that Miles is thus failing. Personally, I think he is a great recruiter and a good "man manager," but a poor in-game and advance game-planning tactician. That said, it is undeniable that he is the most successful coach in LSU history. Unless LSU could be reasonably assured of getting Chip Kelly (or someone very much like Chip Kelly), not sure any change makes sense at present.
