SportsFilter: The Monday Huddle:

A place to discuss the sports stories that aren't making news, share links that aren't quite front-page material, and diagram plays on your hand. Remember to count to five Mississippi before commenting in anger.

Random amazing play video from this year:

Mike Trout's insane slide while stealing third base during a game in May.

I don't have a problem with calling this the greatest slide in the history of baseball.

I've seen "show-a-hand-take-it-away-touch-with-the-other-hand" slides many times.
I've seen "contort your body away from the tag" slides many times.
I've seen "hook your foot on the bag" slides many times.

I've never seen anyone do all three in one slide.

Trout is doing so many different things with his body at once, it's not surprising that the third baseman missed the tag AND that the umpire couldn't believe what he was witnessing (from his angle) and assumed he was out.

Side note:

Is there any chance of putting together a stand-alone thread for "Play of the Year" (or month) nominees? Like, a repository where we can just put a link to amazing plays from throughout the year (or month) so everyone can enjoy them?

There isn't any need for a voting or ranking system.

On the thread about "What baseball picture from this season would confuse people if they saw it 5 years ago?", this one was my absolute favourite:

  • Ichiro pitching...
  • ...for the Marlins...
  • ...but they are called "Miami".

A. Of course it's against the Red Sox.
B. One thing I really like nowadays with these kids and their talents and their complete dominance of sports is the confidence. I like that Trout pops up and casually points at his manager as if to say, "I was safe. There is no question. Challenge that right now."
