Hey, has anyone been following the story about Daily Fantasy sites like FanDuel and DraftKings? There's been an ongoing debate about whether or not it's gambling, based on whether you win based on skill or chance. Just recently, the state of Nevada has weighed in with its own opinion on the matter.

Fantasy sports have been considered games of skill, not gambling, for decades.

This feels like the big Vegas casinos and sportsbooks using their power to get rid of two companies whose business threatens their bottom line.

But we wouldn't have to worry about whether daily fantasy sports are gambling if gambling was legal across the U.S.

It's a joke for our states to claim gambling is a societal harm while they collect millions with their monopoly on running lotteries.

Fantasy sports that extend throughout seasons have; the closer to this "daily fantasy" model you get, the hazier the difference. Federal law currently defines it thusly:

(1) Bet or wager. The term "bet or wager"

(E) does not include

(ix) participation in any fantasy or simulation sports game or educational game or contest in which (if the game or contest involves a team or teams) no fantasy or simulation sports team is based on the current membership of an actual team that is a member of an amateur or professional sports organization (as those terms are defined in section 3701 of title 28) and that meets the following conditions:

(II) All winning outcomes reflect the relative knowledge and skill of the participants and are determined predominantly by accumulated statistical results of the performance of individuals (athletes in the case of sports events) in multiple real-world sporting or other events.

(III) No winning outcome is based

(aa) on the score, point-spread, or any performance or performances of any single real-world team or any combination of such teams; or

(bb) solely on any single performance of an individual athlete in any single real-world sporting or other event.

Note the multiple instances of "multiple" there.

Agreed.

So, going back to the video that Mr. B posted upstream, if this would've happened on the other side of the ice and the guy with the stick in skate scored a goal with that stick, would it have counted? He clearly would have to use a distinct kicking motion to get a shot off with that particular stick.

England are playing cricket against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi at the moment and for folks who think baseball goes on a bit, English Captain Alastair Cook was at bat for 13 hours and 56 minutes, scoring 263 runs.

According to the BBC, more than 215,000 babies were born while he was batting. The ones who were born when he first went in to bat are probably in school now.

It's the longest ever innings, by time, for an English batsman, but only the third longest in test history.

I appreciate the Toronto mayor's attempt to ruin the bat flip.

Well...at least this one's not high on crack.

I'd think that because the puck went in off of a stick, as opposed to a skate, the "distinct kicking motion" rule would not be in effect, and it would be a goal...

If he is holding his own stick and makes contact with the pick while using another stick (even if it is in his feet), that's a penalty.

You are only allowed possession/use of one stick at a time, except when you are picking up and handing the goalie his stick. That is allowed.

Note the multiple instances of "multiple" there.

I read it was requiring teams (and fantasy matchup outcomes) to rest on more than just a single game. For example, it seems like it would be illegal to draft a fantasy football team of only Lions players. I think daily fantasy sports are fine so long as you choose players involved in two different matchups.
