Hidden: 49ers Linebacker Retires at 24, Says NFL Isn't 'Worth the Risk': Chris Borland, a 24-year-old San Francisco 49ers linebacker who signed a nearly $3 million contract with a $600,000 bonus, is choosing to leave the NFL after a promising rookie season over fear of the long-term health effects on the brain of concussions. "I just honestly want to do what's best for my health," he told ESPN. "From what I've researched and what I've experienced, I don't think it's worth the risk. ... I'm concerned that if you wait (until) you have symptoms, it's too late."
