With Jason Giambi's announced retirement, there are now ZERO players in any of the four major sports (NHL/MLB/NBA/NFL) that are older than me.

Hand me my cane.

Regardless of your age, I hope EVERYONE does this. The world of sports is a better place with guys like Julio Franco still wanting to keep playing the game he loves.

Chuck Knoblauch's attack on Andy Pettite comes from out of left field, which is weird because as I remember Chuck's Yankee career, he was usually sending things into left field.

He was entirely okay with the Twins writing off his own HGH testimony as they attempted to induct him into their Hall-of-Fame.

Naturally, even in that he committed an untimely error and had that undone by (allegedly) committing domestic violence.

Chuck, it's a lot easier for people to revise history and work the PR on your legacy when you stop being a total twat for 365 days at least. Clock's back at zero.

Now I want to send him a sign.

I've now watched two rugby matches, lifetime. I should always keep track of this.

Ireland defeated Italy 26-3 in Six Nations round 1. The game featured something I hadn't seen before -- a bunch of mauls. I had no idea how they form or how they end, but they were cool looking and I missed them when they were over. (To this noob, a maul looks like a standing baby scrum with a ball carrier at the back and the other team unable to just go around and tackle him.)

There's a lot of kicking to no purpose I could determine other than field position. The receiving team sometimes kicked it back, only to have the first team kick it a third time.

I think that's their way of letting a little air out of the ball. Apparently it's perfectly legal.

I love watching rugby. It's all calvinball to me but still fun to watch. It feels like a backyard football game among friends where new moves keep getting added to the game and stick around only if nobody objects. My favorite is the inbound pass that features a guy getting lifted 15 feet in the air by his teammates.

I like that too. I keep expecting them to fall away to the sides like a Busby Berkeley dance number.

Outside the Lines is back on the Pats' balls, reporting that a locker room attendant tried to introduce an unapproved special-teams football into the AFC Championship Game.

For further Calvinball, the full second round Six Nations match between Wales and Scotland is available on youtube here.

Anthems start here (always worth watching "Flower of Scotland" in Scotland).

Game starts here.

The game features an excellent beard-off, between Jake Ball and Geoff Cross.
