Colts Owner Irsay Suspended 6 Games for DUI: The NFL has suspended billionaire Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay for six games and fined him $500,000 following his guilty plea in an Indiana court to operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. Irsay admitted to having hydrocodone, oxycodone and alprazolam (Xanax) in his system March 16 when arrested in Carmel. He was originally facing four counts of felony possession of a controlled substance. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a statement that said owners, coaches and team executives "must be held to a higher standard than players."

Late Tuesday morning, a Hamilton County judge accepted Irsay's guilty plea to one count of Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor. Irsay admitted having hydrocodone, oxycodone and alprazolam (Xanax) in his system...Irsay's sentence included one year of probation, during which he may not consume or possess alcohol, and his driver's license was revoked for one year and 40 days.

I mean, fuck Jim Irsay and all, but where is the logic in banning a pill popper from using alcohol? Wouldn't it be more punitive, and even beneficial to the sentencee, to prohibit him from taking prescription narcotics and benzos? The narcotic/benzo prohibition may have been in the sentence, but the article didn't mention it, to my notice. So Irsay can pretty much just zone out on Oxy, Percocet, and Lortab and ride around in his limo, but he can't have a glass of wine with dinner? Strange.

No, I don't really have a point. Isn't that obvious?

Those are all controlled substances, so obtaining them without a prescription is illegal anyway. There's no need for the court to extra-bar Irsay from doing something illegal.

Of course, but I suspect that billionaires don't have a hard time getting prescriptions when they "need" them.

No, but the judge isn't likely to issue a ban on things that might be legitimately required for medical reasons.

Fair enough. But I still see a certain absurdity in banning a pill popper from a legal intoxicant.

True dat. Probably just boilerplate for any OWI.

Not hard, considering the bar has been set so low at times.
