Skier Sarah Burke in Coma After Training Accident: Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke has been hospitalized in critical condition and put in an induced coma after a training accident Tuesday in the superpipe at Park City Mountain, Utah. Burke, 29, is a four-time Winter X Games champion who helped get freestyle halfpipe in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. "Sarah is the top female halfpipe athlete in the world," said Peter Judge of Canadian Freestyle.

Why, the X-games are awesome, especially the winter ones. How often do you get to watch a guy on a mountain bike race down a ski run, or 4 wide racing down a ski run. They are fun to watch. I am not saying the participants are missing MENSA meetings, but it has entertainment value for sure.

Why?? The X games are great. I dont know that they rank that high up in the world of sport, but they are way entertaining, especially the winter ones. Where else can you watch stoners and adrenalin junkies race mountain bikes down ski slopes or do flips on snowmobiles? Hope thiscan be extreamly dangerous for sure. girl makes a full recovery. Great for people who like Punkd and Jackass. For me it is another way for ESPN to make money by showing people risking their lives. Fuck the X Games.

I went ahead and undeleted the comment because you brought it up again. Posting in a discussion just to attack the sport under discussion has always been frowned upon.
Besides, skiing isn't limited to the X Games. Her sport's in the Olympics and a lot of Olympic sports are extremely dangerous.
Getting back to Burke, I hope the coma's precautionary and she's able to make a full recovery. I can't imagine she'll be competing in a month at the X Games to defend her title.

Sounds like a weird injury -- from all accounts, I guess it didn't seem like that much of a biff.
terrapin, there have always been people who watched ski racing for the crashes. Also auto racing. Also any other sport involving speed and risk. Halfpipe is just a recent addition to the list. And, ever since there's been television, the crashes have made the highlight reel. The X Games is neither the only nor the leading proponent of crashes as entertainment.

Yeah, it would have been a shame to lose that gem.
For me it is another way for ESPN to make money by showing people risking their lives.
For me it is watching people compete at what I do for fun. You don't like the risk, don't watch. Just because your risk-averse doesn't mean everyone has to be.
I hardly watch the X-games anymore but it's because most of the snowboarding stuff I watch is from videos. My point being, these people would still be doing this stuff even if there were no X-games.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm in the middle of a Punk'd marathon.

So do we all distance ourselves from anything that involves risk and might kill us? That's it, I'm getting out of the military.
We're probably at greater risk being hit by a bus than skiiers and X-Game athletes having an accident such as this.
And, ever since there's been television, the crashes have made the highlight reel.
Who remembers seeing that spectacular ski crash from the intro to ABC's Wide World of Sports?

This statement is silly. ESPN makes money selling advertising. They show sports programs that people want to watch in order to get ratings and sell advertising. Your implication that they are in some way conspiring to have people risk their lives for entertainment value is ridiculous. If it didn't get ratings they wouldn't show it. Most of the people who watch this stuff are actually people who participate in the activity for their own enjoyment. Signaling out ESPN when most television networks show sports and other activities that involve risk seems like you may have an ax to grind. Now if you were talking about Jackass movies I might agree, but then again I have never seen one. I have no interest in seeing a guy light his balls on fire but watching an athlete perform a spectacular feat of skill and daring is entirely different.
I hope she recovers.
