NY/NJ to Texas...Van Gundy takes over Rockets: I'm having trouble comprehending Bill Parcells as coach of the Dallas Cowboys and Jeff Van Gundy as coach of the Houston Rockets. What's going on here?

Van Gundy always struck me as unsuccessful just because he seemed on appearances to be a loser. But it turns out he's a pretty good coach, and a good fit in Houston. I'm still laughing about how the Pistons fired Carlisle and hired Brown, the man he had just beaten in the playoffs, and how the Hornets fired a successful coach (Silas) to hire one of the worst coaches in history. Not that I really give a damn about the NBA. But this coaching carousel has been interesting.

Brown, Silas, and Van Gundy are just three more examples of owners taking the easy way with white guys getting recycled rather than giving some deserving minority a shot.

Silas is black.

Still? Alternatively: 1. Says you. 2. He played for the Celtics. 3. What's your point?

Sorry, meant to use Floyd, not Silas. Good catch Bernreuther.

On the larger point, the NBA has the best color-blind management hiring record in any pro sport, and it presumably will get better when Avery Johnson retires. If they've reached a point where there are now black retreads who keep getting second and third and fourth chances, that's progress.

Texas has become the 4th Coast (Chicago being the Third). Beyond their contribution to the sports world, they are beginning to impress artistically, intellectually, and culturally (at least in Austin). And, of course, there's rcade.
