Judge Denies NFL's Request for Stay: As the NFL begins its draft tonight, the federal judge who lifted the NFL lockout two days ago has denied the league's request to put her ruling on hold, a decision that allows free agent signings and player trades to take place. Two general managers told ESPN that none will be taking place yet. "We are awaiting further word from the league," one said.

Might have been better if the judge put a clampdown on all operations - including the draft - for the sake of the more operationally challenged franchises in the league.

The discarders of Beuerlein, sponsors of Weinke, enablers of Delhomme, and promoters of Moore have now become the selectors of Newton.

I'd like very much for Carolina to be proven bold and brilliant with this pick, but I can't escape the encompassing feelings of doubt and dread about it.
