So why don't I just get back on the bus?

Wow. That RR sure can direct- and knowing him, that shoe commercial probably only cost $7,000

I'mma let you finish, Kobe...

Will Nike ever make a pair of shoes that are good enough to just advertise as a pair of shoes?

Am I alone in remembering the time that Adidas, Nike etc... Merely sold trainers/sneakers and they were quite sensibly priced and just a simple pair of shoes, not a fashion accessory?

I distinctly remember going shoe shopping with my mum and seeing them just sitting there... You know, like regular shoes.

Air Jordans, Drood.

I was given a primer on the symbiotic relationship between Nike and Weiden + Kennedy a couple of weeks ago. Nike's advertising is as much about advertising Nike's advertising agency, with the assistance of Nike's advertising budget and pretty much free rein to do whatever they want.

US Keds were good enough for me. If I remember, they only cost a couple of bucks per pair. Even adjusted for inflation, that's still a lot less than Nike, Adidas, et al charge for their third-world exploited worker specials. Call me a throwback, cheapskate, or whatever, I just don't believe that something with someone else's name on it makes it any easier to walk or run, keeps my feet any drier or warmer, or makes me look any better (actually, making me look good at all is a task worthy of Sisyphus). I am not the marketer's dream.

Really? I've read Born to Run, so are you actually using homemade/purchased huaraches to run?

Heh...we're up to our ancestors in snow here, so I'm not using them for anything at the moment -- not even to wear around the house, it's way too cold. However, after years of foot problems, I'm willing to try the barefoot advocates' contention that super-supportive shoes are the cause of many foot problems, and try using a minimalist sandal in an effort to improve my mechanics.

Well, I think it basically started in the mid 80s when the first air jordans came out. So you could have raised a child to their 30s in that time frame. It's been a while.

But just looking at various websites you can get nike basketball shoes for 50 bucks. And my mother lived the last 20 years of her life in plain white nike tennis shoes that she would NOT pay over 30 dollars for. So much cheaper shoes are out there if you look beyond commercials.

US Keds were good enough for me. If I remember, they only cost a couple of bucks per pair.

Keds? 2 dollars a pair? Look, I'm nostalgic too, but you're nostalgic for the 30s.

SpoFi is full of squares. Surely, someone besides me likes shoes that look cool.

That was a pretty awesome commercial. I watched TNT's all-star festivities, and they make NBA basketball so much fun. The NBA All-Star fantasy draft was funny. The retrospective on past slam dunk contests was cool. I don't know if it is TNT or NBA, but they made it worth watching.

Certain cool-looking shoes come with a lot of baggage. It's a personal choice, ya know?

Keds?

I was rocking some sweet Keds in the early '70s. Hard to believe they ever played NBA basketball in these. Hurts my ankle just to look at them.

More like the late '40s, but it's much the same. I know the world changes, but it's not always for the better.

The cool kids wore Zips. At least that's what my mom told me. She also told me I was special a lot.

Those are some sweet shoes, but for 50 bucks they should come with matching buster brown knee high socks.

I somehow missed the whole keds ruling the court era. In high school the only keds I saw were the plain white ones that were part of the uniform of every high school girl (in the south, at least).

Like I said, I'm nostalgic too. I grew up in the 80s and I LOVE the 80s. I tell people that and they then tell me all the ways the 80s sucked, and in many ways, they're right. But I don't care. The 80s were AWESOME.

But honestly, some things were worse, some things were better. Much of the time we choose to remember the 'better'. Look at it this way, in the late 40s most baseball teams had zero black players on their roster. That sucks way worse than the MTVization of basketball shoes.

So sometimes not for the better, sometimes much better.
