Fantastic call last night on Halladay's bun in the Phillie/Giants game. Pathetic. The umpire is two feet from the ball and can't make the call? As I see it, this was a big play in that game. Halladay may have struck out if that bunt is called foul. Calling it fair ends up putting two runners in scoring position, both of whom scored.

These umpires are determining the fates of teams with wrong calls. They suck, period. No other way to put it. They're lazy, incompetent, and it's unacceptable.

So how do you really feel?

I only saw the highlights last night. I didn't catch any talk about it being foul, only that he didn't run on it. The announcers I heard made it sound more like his error, not the ump's.

The ball was very clearly off the plate and in foul territory when it was picked up. The announcers during the game speculated the reason Halladay didn't run was because he saw that it wasn't a fair ball.

I didn't see the play live, and I've only seen the replay at MLB.com, so my interpretation is missing the 6 other camera angles they may have run during the broadcast.

The home plate umpire was shielded by the catch from seeing EXACTLY where it was picked up. So his clue is that the catcher thought it was fair (why else did he follow through with the play).

The first base ump should have stepped in and helped make the call, but he might have been blocked out by the first baseman running in as part of the bunt cycle (I can't tell).

As for why Halladay didn't run, he had already suffered a groin pull in the 2nd inning, and wasn't going to make things worse by running out a play where he expects to be out. One person who saw the replay said to me that he was walking gingerly to the dugout after that play.

Was there any argument from the SF catcher or manager after the play was over?

After seeing some of the angry signs directed at Rooney in the crowd last game, that's gonna make things awkward for the fans.

I'm not thinking some of those particular fans will be too consumed with feelings of awkwardness.

"It appears likely that the club will now be closed down and liquidated by the Administrators." Portsmouth FC appears to be on the brink of disappearing.

Well, that was a very interesting bit of public negotiation. Hard to read between the lines, though Daniel Taylor has a stab (he's owned this story, and seems to have an inside track again) and the classic Fergie epithet in the official press release -- "I said to the boy that the door is always open and I'm delighted Wayne has agreed to stay" -- can be taken as a reassertion of hierarchy in the club.

Or, Imperial Lord Ferg and Rooney just found a way of ensuring the Glazers stump up more cash for players' wages.

It all seemed a bit contrived to me.
