Sportsfilter Technology Refresh?:
Sportsfilter was founded back in 2002 using a mimic of the Metafilter site code as I understand it- back then, sports posts seemed too "newsfilter-y" back when that was actually frowned upon at Metafilter, and this site was spun up as a dedicated place for that kind of content.

In the intervening years, Metafilter has added a number of features- big and small- that make that site very functional and usable. I'm curious if there is any possibility of having a "technology refresh", in which Sportsfilter gets an update of some of the site code to enable things like live preview, tagging, favoriting, etc.

[insert request for php-based cms] ;) Speaking of refreshing and site maintenance, I haven't seen much of kirk around lately, but I see his nick on MeFi often. Hope all is well, kirk!

I've talked to Matt Haughey about it and he's amenable to the idea. He's definitely OK with us emulating its features.

But can we have a flag? (or flags)?

Ask SpoFi!!! SpoFi music--I can dig out those early '80s demos because I know, I just know, you guys are dying to hear my power pop tunage.

I know I've been asking for this for a while now (as have others), but how's about a locker room search feature?

We should also delete some of the old and unused accounts to free up memory.

posted by DrJohnEvans at 12:58 PM on June 10, 2008

How about bringing back all the lost Locker Room Interviews? If this tech update really allows for lost content to be retrieved, then I'm all for it.

I agree with DrJ.

Who could disagree with such an eminently sensible suggestion? Bravo DrJ.

We should also delete some of the old and unused accounts to free up memory. Can I switch to a lower number?

posted by tommybiden at 10:35 AM on June 11, 2008

Why would you want a lower number? Nothing good comes out of having a low number. There's nothing in Spofi's Two-Digit Champagne Lounge except for some stale sandwiches and an extra backgammon board. Really, nothing to see in here. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to check up on one of the 15k kids. He's polishing the yacht.

I pope squatted 10,000. Shall we start the bidding at, say, $500?

posted by JJ at 11:03 AM on June 11, 2008

Cash? Forget it. Ask to wear rcade's cool new hat and for a ride in his car. It's what he'd ask for.

posted by chicobangs at 11:13 AM on June 11, 2008

I once wanted a lower number. But then it was pointed out that my number was cool and that I could use it to get the honeys. Now I'm rollin' in the babes. Thanks SpoFi!

If you really want to claim to have a lower number, just pretend it's binary and then you'll be 17.

I know I've been asking for this for a while now (as have others), but how's about a locker room search feature? Seconded. I've been googling for about half an hour now trying to find somebody's rant about user numbers (I think it was the craftysousepaw). Well anyways, it was awesome, and I want to read it again.

posted by MrFrisby at 07:52 PM on June 11, 2008

(I think it was the craftysousepaw). Your right there Frisby, and it is at the top of the greatest SportsFilter rant's that I have read so far. I can't find the thread either.

I think he was BullpenPro at the time.

As a four-digiter, I was quite proud. I miss the old dude. The thread is in the locker room archives under "navel gazing." I go back occasionally to re-read it.

apoch, apparently, two chuckles.

posted by tommybiden at 02:17 PM on June 12, 2008

I just re-read that too. Yeah, that wasn't quite as monumental as BPP's.

posted by hawkguy at 02:41 PM on June 12, 2008

I never saw that BPP rant. Truly cool. Except for one thing: The obvious hatred for the lowly five-digiters. But my zeros look sexy between my ones.

I did laugh a lot. My kids were asking what was so funny. I asked them if they knew who bombed pearl harbor. I learned they need to teach more history in third grade.

Thanks a [deleted] lot for finding that, hawkguy. That whole [deleted] thread makes me [deleted] ROFLCOPTER. Yeah, I miss the old [deleted] dude too. BTW, I have not gotten my digits stuck in a vacuum cleaner since then.

I have. It's almost as much pleasure as it is pain. By the way, the Celtics look like idiots right now.

posted by hawkguy at 09:05 PM on June 12, 2008

Do you still feel that way, hawky?

posted by NoMich at 08:13 AM on June 13, 2008

Nope. The disgusting part is we had some bad storms in my area last night and I switched to watch the weather at half time. I missed the entire comeback. The weather seems more important the day after a town not too far from here is 85% destroyed by a tornado. That's two in Kansas in two years.

Yes, it's been a rough time here in the midwest so far; Bananarama had it right.

posted by yerfatma at 09:54 AM on June 13, 2008

We had some bad storms last Sunday, thousands (including us) were without power. We didn't get it back until yesterday afternoon.

DrJohnEvans: We should also delete some of the old and unused accounts to free up memory.
But not this one! Le Sigh By the way, I noticed all the old posts for that user are gone. Is that what wc2k2 was talking about here, that we lost a bunch of data at some point? And if that's the case, can I get that user number. :)

posted by hincandenza at 03:03 PM on June 13, 2008

Everything from the first 1000 links and the 1000 locker room posts are gone. Which is very depressing.

posted by Ying Yang Mafia at 04:15 PM on June 13, 2008

Yeah, a lot of early stuff was deleted because SQL Server had filled up the disk space, probably due to it's incredible ability to create log files if you don't keep an eye on it. They keep teasing about returning the Red Dawn thread, but I imagine certain people in the government can lean awfully hard when they want something to stay out of the public eye. Look at the way the AP has gone after rcade all of a sudden. Coincidence? I think not.
