Emails were sent this morning with all needed info to mail out CD’s, remember the deadline for shipment is Friday March 14. Here is the list of groups Dental Floss Tycoon’s Owlhouse Folkways Dr. John Evens BoKnows Terrapin Genuine Indian Guru’s Little-Brown-Bat ufezjones qbert72 Mr.Frisby Grouper Trooper’s Tron7 The Black Hand Cjets yerfatma Frank Zappa and the Mommas NoMich Tahoemoj goddam vito90 Here is a simple little Spofi CD Swap Trivia Challenge. As you may have already noticed each group name is part of a different song (some minus the ‘s to drop the plural and make singular). Some are pretty obvious while one or two may be a bit more difficult. Have Fun!

This is where the SportsFilter last.fm group comes in handy. I can spy on what folks on my list listen to so I can either match my songs to their taste, or I can avoid duplications. So if you haven't already joined, please do!

Thanks for the work Folkways. Email received.

This is where the SportsFilter last.fm group comes in handy. Don't be giving away all my little secrets. I was going to empress everyone in our group with a CD catered to their individual listening habbits. ya right, I'm way to lazy for that.

got the e-mail, folkways. cd's will be in the mail by thurs. thanks for the effort!

Hm, Geniune Indiana Guru comes from Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show's "Cover of the Rolling Stone," and Frank Zappa and the Mommas (actually, I believe it's "the Mothers," but I could be wrong) comes from "Smoke on the Water," by Deep Purple. Zappa's "Montana" had the Dental Floss Tycoon in it (riding Mightly Little, no less!). I'm lost on Grouper Trouper, but for some reason, I'm thinking ABBA.

posted by The_Black_Hand at 01:36 PM on February 25, 2008

Is Grouper Trouper a Beefheart reference?

posted by chicobangs at 02:25 PM on February 25, 2008

Wrong fish, chico. Beefheart rocked the trout, not the grouper. heh

Where's the Cranky Old Gas Expellers group?

posted by billsaysthis at 02:45 PM on February 25, 2008

Okay. I was guessing. Trout weren't the only fish he wore.

NoMich, goddam, and vito90 - I hope you refrain from including Nickleback on your CD's. Tahoe is twitching again.

posted by BoKnows at 03:37 PM on February 25, 2008

NoMich, goddam, and vito90 - I hope you refrain from including Nickleback on your CD's. tahoe doesn't have to worry. I have never owned anything by Nickleback in my life. I even have an applet on my computer that automatically detroys any Nickleback mp3s should any accidently make their way onto my hard drive somehow.

posted by goddam at 04:11 PM on February 25, 2008

Okay. I was guessing. Trout weren't the only fish he wore. I know, I was just trying to be funny. *sigh*

posted by NoMich at 04:44 PM on February 25, 2008

(actually, I believe it's "the Mothers," but I could be wrong) Actually I believe you're correct (depending on if you're listening to a studio cut or live cut) although I haven't looked up the lyrics. On my bootleg copy of a Deep Purple concert in Frankfurt Ian Gillan clearly belts out 'mommas" A grouper is a nasty yet edible fish found in the Gulf of Mexico among other places. I thought Grouper Trouper might be tough to get. Those receiving a CD from me will know the song and artist soon enough. and how did I know you would get these right away TBH?

posted by Folkways at 04:58 PM on February 25, 2008

Mine will go out tomorrow or the next day. (They've been ready for a while). To those in my Dental Floss group: Let me know when they arrive, I just want to make sure you get 'em. Again, Thanks Folkways.

posted by BoKnows at 06:30 PM on February 25, 2008

Mine are out on Monday, when I get back to Australia. Email received earlier. Oh goody, I get Dr J again. I'm still amused by Mime Abduction from last time.

posted by owlhouse at 08:24 PM on February 25, 2008

My final playlist isn't quite narrowed down yet, but you can be sure it won't have Nickleback. Aesop Rock will however be making an appearance.

I got a pretty bad '80s jones when I put my songs together.

posted by NoMich at 07:41 AM on February 26, 2008

I felt warm and sunny when I put my songs together. I still need more, though, so it won't be going out this week.

posted by lil_brown_bat at 10:19 AM on February 26, 2008

If you're looking for warm and fuzzy might I suggest "It's a Sunday" or "Beep Beep Love" or "Fuzzy" by The Incredible Moses Leroy (all can be found on the fantastic Electric Pocket Radio album)

posted by apoch at 10:23 AM on February 26, 2008

With all the obscure (to me) musical references made so far, I feel like I'm going to disappoint my group. It's upbeat, some mainstream stuff, some not. I guess you can salvage the jewel case if the CD sucks. (Crossing my fingers)

posted by BoKnows at 10:35 AM on February 26, 2008

Not warm and fuzzy, apoch -- warm and sunny. As in, Bahia. Yes, it's lil_brown_bat's "enough goddamn snow already" Brazilian mix.

posted by lil_brown_bat at 10:56 AM on February 26, 2008

BoKnows: Don't worry about your mix. Just express yourself, your tastes, and—if you can—include local music. Nothing you send will disappoint. Each of us is about to receive new music that didn't cost us a dime (eff the RIAA!), so why would anyone be disappointed? I look forward to receiving your mix.

posted by scully at 11:13 AM on February 26, 2008

I'm still in the selection process but should be able to make the deadline.

posted by scully at 02:32 PM on February 26, 2008

posted by NoMich at 07:35 PM on February 26, 2008

Mr. Fris, how does the LightScribe work? I just installesd one in my own, but have abso-freakin-lutely no idea how it works.

posted by tahoemoj at 08:29 PM on February 26, 2008

I got one too. Have yet to use it though. I think perhaps I shall have to learn how. (not to be outdone by my fellow Genuine Indian Guru)

posted by lil_brown_bat at 08:32 PM on February 26, 2008

Well I haven't used LightScribe yet (and apparently I'm not going to) so I don't know how it works. Yeah, I obviously need to look more at my hardware instead of my software. My software (CyberLink LabelPrint) works like your everyday CD label maker, it was relatively simple to figure out, but my burner uses Labelflash not LightScribe (software is compatible with both, hence my earlier confusion).

posted by MrFrisby at 09:26 PM on February 26, 2008

I will post them on the Swap web site like last year. Thanks goddam!

posted by Folkways at 06:52 AM on February 27, 2008

Oh boy. I kinda got on a roll and now my mix is a double CD. Is that against the rules? Should I pare it down to a single CD?

posted by NoMich at 01:03 PM on February 27, 2008

Not as far as I can see. It's your shipping costs. And everybody gets two coasters that way, so if there happens to be someone on the Internet who has a friend in real life AND they're in your group, they'll be happy.

posted by yerfatma at 01:23 PM on February 27, 2008

NoMich I ended up with a 3 CD set last year. I only sent 2 though because disc 3 was stuff not good enough to be on discs 1 or 2. Looks like this year may be a 2 disc set again, still editing songs.

posted by Folkways at 01:47 PM on February 27, 2008

mine is a two disc set as well, but it was planned from the beginning. finished the mix. working on graphics. not going to announce the track list until later.

posted by scully at 03:10 PM on February 27, 2008

Terrapin and folkways, thanks for the reassurances about my CD. I started to feel better, then I read about Light Scribe, and thought "shit", all I have is a sharpie marker. "Oh well", I thought, and blew it off. Now I'm reading about 2 disc sets, 3 disc sets, and graphics. This time my brain said, "Man, I'm a loser". Then I remembered that I burned the discs, put them in the jewel case, inserted the play list and mailed them without even using the gosh darn sharpie marker. So, your discs are not labeled at all. I have 50 GBs of music on my computer and I can't seem to make a CD. Now I feel like the noob that I am. I'm gonna need a one SpoFiSwap free pass. Unless you all like the music. Then everything's cool.

posted by BoKnows at 04:16 PM on February 27, 2008

You truly crack me up Bo. Mine are labeled using sharpies, no graphics mumbo jumbo here. Maybe once you get my CD's you wont feel so bad. I did at least label them though.

posted by Folkways at 05:53 PM on February 27, 2008

Grouper Troopers, specifically: Tron7 The Black Hand yerfatma Your CDs are in the mail. PLAY LOUD! And, by the way, it's one CD, not two, not three. I follow the rules, people! Actually, I'm only squawking because you two CD people are making me feel inadequate.

posted by cjets at 07:31 PM on February 27, 2008

My CDs will go out tomorrow. The only reason my mix is on two CDs is 'cause I got on a roll. I'm sure the folks on my list are going to wonder why I did two CDs though. The fact is, I'm not sure why either, but it's too late to go back now.

posted by NoMich at 08:18 PM on February 27, 2008

I've just posted my song list to the old address. Ear Wax Down Under, an inadequate single CD collection, will shortly be on it's way to the Flossers.

posted by yerfatma at 04:48 PM on February 28, 2008

Yerfatma, I just forwarded you Folkways e-mail with all the addresses for our group. Hope you get it.

posted by cjets at 04:59 PM on February 28, 2008

Sorry bout that yerfatma, I haven't checked my list yet but if you didn't get the email I must have f*ed up and that shows a real lack of quality control on my part. Fire me if you must but come hell or high water you will get the addresses cause I WANT MY FATTY CD. I'll send you the email even though cjets already has and this time don't let your dog eat it.

posted by BoKnows at 09:02 AM on February 29, 2008

The new Brita Penis Filter. Now, whatever comes out of your penis tastes as fresh as it did when it was introduced to your body. Simply affix the filter to the glans with the included roofing nails...

posted by The_Black_Hand at 09:51 AM on February 29, 2008

Roofing nails? That sounds like a poor design. You have to be able to change the filter. May I suggest clevis pins instead.

Thanks to tahoemoj, I got CD number one today. So far it's been very illuminating. The first Eels song I went, "So that's who they are! I've always kinda liked this song." Then the Cake song kicked in and I was all like, "Hey! This is the theme song for that couple that does the special 'on the road' report for NPR's Splendid Table." So far, it's been a very good house cleaning mix. I have a feeling that it may be getting a lot of life in my back deck's boombox this coming summer.

I got my first Dental Floss CD this morning and wow does BoKnow how to mix music. Excellent combination of stuff I know like Alan Parsons, the Toadies, and Lenny Kravitz to stuff I have not heard like Wolfmother, Silverchair, and Clutch. And I did not know that Tom Morello, Flea, Henry Rollins had released an album, great stuff. I have been listening to it all morning and set it in my top 25 rotation in my multi disc CD player. Thanks BoKnows, and I look forward to all the other Dental Floss I will get.
