The S-Team.: It started off as a joke, but I'm beginning to think we might need it.

I'm not saying that the PANTHEON isn't doing a good job. This is in no way a criticism. I'm just saying as a persistent (some might say *too* persistent) user of the site, that having a couple of trusted users help police the site could help. T-Shirts will need to be designed for this I am sure.

I would eagerly offer my services on this one should they be needed. And if so, then I totally call "Face."

I'm just saying as a persistent (some might say *too* persistent) user of the site, that having a couple of trusted users help police the site could help. In what way lilnemo? I was looking over the past three days. There's been 11 deletions. Most were almost immediate. Today there were two. One lasted only 12 minutes, the other, the one you linked to, lasted 27 minutes (People commented after I closed it, but in the future closed threads will have their own home and will actually be closed for good). That's not bad. It's very rare that an admin isn't on spofi at least once an hour. Not saying it's perfect. We need to ban sooner. When a member makes the same mistake 3 times they either don't care to learn about the site or simply can't comprehend it. Right now banning isn't a one button click, at least not for me. Hopefully that will change. And we need to have it programmed where you can't leave the link blank nor link to sportsfilter (and maybe a few other sites as well). That's happening soon also. But neither of those are helped by more people. So I guess I'm a little confused. Perhaps you could go into greater detail.

lilnemo just wants a t-shirt and to kick people in the balls. I can't say I blame him because who doesn't love t-shirts? Seriously though, that maddux guy, just ban him. And if you email him to tell him he's banned, say something like "Go jock yourself on a girl's bicycle repeatedly and come back and read the rest of this email... we'll wait for you..." and then waaaaaaay at the bottom of the email, after many hard-returns, write, "Ok, all jocked? Good! That was from the S-Team! Consider yourself bannified, mofo!"

I think that, while the pantheon has been doing a good job, there is a steady erosion of quality and expectations. I suppose it is just growth and we can only do our best to contribute positively. Although, when I recently spotted a great post I was unable to rally a contribution due to the immediate crap in the thread. Sort of takes the wind out of your sails. Here is my suggestion for the S-Team t-shirt.

I agree with gg on this one. Pantheon has been doing a great job (thanks fellas!) trying to keep up with the maelstrom of absolute garbage we've been experiencing as part of our growth, it just seems like it's happening constantly. We're all eagerly awaiting 2.0, but is there a way in the meantime to just not allow newbs to post threads for a while (45 days maybe)? It will cut down on the Pantheon needing to babysit 24/7 and general static on the front page.

That's the type thing that will help. A trial membership is coming which is badly needed. Threads like this one are a pain because it brings out the idiots. A trial membership along with quicker banning would equal a better site in my opinion. Slower growing, but higher quality. Also, anyone who can't be bothered to use periods really shouldn't be here. Also...anyone...who...writes...like...this!!

He's some sort of weird uptalking poster and his style gives me a headache like when I first start reading a James Ellroy book. Unlike Ellroy, I don't think there's enough creepy brilliance to make it worth working through said head trauma.

After looking at examples hear I think that there is more an issue of trolls not being deleted than FPP's. What I think would be a nice thing to have is an area where users can complain (file greivences?) against these shitheads. Obviously there is the contact form, but I won't lie when I say that I don't have much faith in it. Also, I have developed a deep rooted hatred for defrag3x.

Kind of like the flagging on MeFi, anyway. I don't think a grievance thread is going to turn into anything else except a mess.

posted by jerseygirl at 12:23 PM on April 25, 2006

Wow. I haven't logged-in since yesterday and my FPPs done blown up. justgary, I wasn't trying to imply that the PANTHEON doesn't do a good job. Its shoveling shit from a sitting position, but you guys do a fantastic job. My point ( if I ever had one) was that as a member of SpoFi, I (and apparently others) wish I could do more to help the site. I try to abide by the rules, I try to post "quality" links, I try not to be too snarky in my comments. But it doesn't feel like enough. To tell you the truth, when people start posting inane diatribes, or start pissing matches, I take it a little personal. I guess I'm saying that, as much a joy as SpoFi is for me, I wish I could do more for it. I was hoping this thread would be a spring board for that. We've had a handful of "colorful" users comment that if things get out of hand, the SpoFi "gestapo" would get them, not that it would stop them. But it got me to thinking, maybe a real life S-team, a devoted handful of users could give the PANTHEON a heads-up, or something. See now I'm just blathering. Sorry.

justgary, I wasn't trying to imply that the PANTHEON doesn't do a good job. I didn't take it that way at all lilnemo. Was curious what you had in mind. I understand what everyone's saying. I know I sound like a broken record, but I really think the solution isn't more people deleting crap, or a place for people to complain, but in: a) Banning members who obviously take away from the site. Get rid of them. Bye-bye. b) a trial period for new members. It would help weed out the bad, and hopefully keep them from being replaced on a daily basis. I disagree with the idea that things have gone down hill constantly. There was a time not too long ago, before we started the entrance exam, that things were worse. But I have no doubt they could be much better.

posted by lilnemo at 01:56 PM on April 25, 2006

While I agree that there are those who make life unpleasant around here, and that much of this has to do with the phenomenal growth of SpoFi lately, I would hate to see anything that would detract from someone being able to contribute from day one. Looking back on my first comments, they were in regards to the "I want fast black players" fiasco that the Air Force Academy coach got himself into. It was a topic that didn't get too snarky even though it was loaded that way, given the material involved. In fact, it was that FPP that caught my eye in the first place. I would hope that we do not restrict new members from contributing immediately, either in comments or with links. But rather, make a first FPP that is pulled (for problems with the FPP itself, not with where the discussion goes) be grounds for a lengthy suspension of FPP rights. As for comments, which IMO are where the true problems lie, it is a bit harder. We almost all have days when we, for whatever reason, just have to make the snide comment, even if it is just to razz another SpoFier who knows better than to take it personally. But, it becomes obvious when all that someone does is cause trouble, casting flames about with disregard and impunity. Perhaps in addition to the enterance exam, we require something like THIS

I like the idea of tying posting rights to deletions, but the problem is differentiating between deletes for double posts and deletes for bad posts. Well, if it's made clear that if there's a problem or issue (of one kind or another) where the pantheon might need to have to reach you (for some reason or other), then what's the problem with insisting on a working (and occasionally checked) e-mail address? It also would mean that you could send a personal warning to cut knuckleheadery out without unnecessary in-thread humiliation, and then if bannination is still necessary, you can point to a prior warning to strengthen the case. Like all the other solutions, it won't stop the assholiness, but it will slow it down. (Also, seconded on both those trolls, sk8r and j-girl. Sweet creamery elvis in graceland, but I cringe at those dicknoses.)

posted by chicobangs at 06:51 PM on April 25, 2006

That email verification thing won't make a difference. I have a trash account that I use whenever I'm unable to get around registration on a website or when I'm unsure about their privacy policies. I imagine many other people do something similar. Sorry to just disagree and leave, but sadly, I don't have a better suggestion.

posted by Samsonov14 at 09:25 PM on April 25, 2006

Yeah, but this isn't for some news site or something where you don't interact. There's a reason to have it there, not to mention a place to send a warning. Because then the conversation becomes: "Well, we sent you an email explaining what you had done wrong." "Oh, I don't use that email. It's just a dummy account I never read." "Well, okay then, that violates our Terms of Service, which is itself grounds for bannination." And it's no longer about the all-caps white-power slogans (or whatever) in their comments, but rather something more basic, which they agreed to when they signed up in the first place. Like everything else, it slows them down, which is all that realistically can be done. Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoomail all have fairly good spam filters, so there's no reason to not have a public address for stuff like this. (I have three accounts, one for personal mail, one for wherever I'm chicobangs, and one I never use for dummy registrations and noninteractive sites. It's about 10% more work than having one all-use account, and anyone who wants to reach me easily can.)

posted by chicobangs at 10:22 PM on April 25, 2006

I guess the main reason for the Netiquette quiz ( I failed the first time also) is to at least make one know what is acceptable, having to go through it until you get it right. The second time I still failed, just can't agree with with posting if you think you may be wrong, but then, I am thinking of basic fact-checking before getting into a pissing contest, er polite debate.

posted by elovrich at 11:36 PM on April 25, 2006

That email verification thing won't make a difference. Yes, it will. Anyone determined enough to get in and crap on the site will obviously get through, but basic email verification will weed out the lazy. Which, judging from the content they've been contributing, seems to be what we have here. Also, what chico said. It's not a perfect fix-all solution, but it's enough to slow crap down.

bperk, I have to take issue with your double-hyphens. If you can't find a more structural construct to break up your sentences—for instance, the first instance should be a comma or even a semicolon—then you should at least use a proper emdash (—) to render them.

I think it's working, but afterwards the whole thread changes color in the background, not just the offending post. Is this right? How does the Pantheon determine which post got tagged?

posted by BullpenPro at 07:32 AM on April 27, 2006

Also, are the settings for the background color coming from SpoFi or from my browser settings? I'm just asking -- when you tag a post the thread color on my computer is the most hideous shade of green and it makes the rest of the thread hard to read (or even look at). A text box came up that allowed me to submit a comment to the Pantheon regarding the flagged post. So, I comment, flag the post. Move on. I do this to several posts. Later, I go to my desktop, and it's riddled with icons! AND (here's the weird part) they're all labeled with my comments! So I double-click one of the icons, and it takes me to the thread where I made the comment, but all the formatting is shot and the links don't work. I don't drink beer. I drink guinness.

The Pantones do great covers, like the songs Lady in #711, #4975 Bottomed Girls, or really anything by #7547 Sabbeth or #7488 Day.

You know, I was unsure. I've been wrong before, you know? Lots. So, I hit up my friend Google who confirmed that the Queen song is actually Fat Bottomed Girls. and... Black Bottomed Girls is a porn, DJE.

I don't drink beer. I drink guinness. I *knew* Guinness wasn't beer.

and... Black Bottomed Girls is a porn, DJE. It's hard getting motivated for the day when I know I have already hit the highlight this early. That is classic.

I just deal with sorting the bodies. Man, I totally read that as "boobies" and thought, "Someone stole my gig!"

Speaking of idjits, this guy's about to be one for four on FPPs. I think he needs a good talking to.

and... Black Bottomed Girls is a porn, DJE. Hey, you're the one in the band. I'm just calling 'em as I see 'em.

Seeing a lot of "em" huh?

Is it "Too Much Information Day" on the SpoFi? Cuz I got this story about a midget, and a mullet...

Can someone throw me a closing tag here? TIA

posted by yerfatma at 01:14 PM on April 28, 2006

Does that mean you can hijack a post and actually make it all italic ? If only there was a capslock tag you could leave open.

posted by YukonGold at 02:38 PM on April 28, 2006

I'm so confused.

posted by DrJohnEvans at 02:42 PM on April 28, 2006

Yukon, you'd have to wreak a little CSS havoc with text-transform. That'd give you all caps. Maybe a greasemonkey script that turns the whole thing into a fucking trollfest. All caps, blinking, etc.

Oh shit. I think I broke it.

I am so, so sorry about this. I can't seem to keep the font color at black. It keeps "< / font>"ing me.

posted by Samsonov14 at 06:18 PM on April 28, 2006

hahahahahaha.

You broke the internet! Now I have to go outside or something! Damn you!

posted by chicobangs at 06:21 PM on April 28, 2006

Well, that was embarassing. Posting in a thread about people who are ruining Spofi and then ruining it myself. Hey, what's that in my chardonnay? Where'd these ten thousand spoons come from? Thanks for the quick fix, Pantheon.

posted by Samsonov14 at 06:36 PM on April 28, 2006

This guy is on track for a great comeback.

posted by geekyguy at 06:37 PM on April 28, 2006

Thanks for the quick fix, Pantheon. It's strange. I'm on a mac with safari and didn't see anything screwed up. The only reason I knew about the single font tag was your comment.
