worldcup is slacking... 6th?!

posted by StarFucker at 09:05 AM on April 21, 2005

there is a interesting battle in the middle of the table, with 5 teams within 18 pts, and 6 within 31 pts. should be interesting to see who will finish 12th, assuming no one leaps to the top 10.

posted by garfield at 09:22 AM on April 21, 2005

Yeah, SF, I appear to be stuck in 6th. This will be the make-or-break weekend, I think. If I can't advance now, I don't think I'll do it again. Although, it's heartening to see the top 6 are separated from each of their neighbors by about 13 points or less. That's a matter of just picking the right captain. Man.

btw, I'm rooting for the Baggies to survive.

w00t! 5 points from the top! And it would have been closer if they hadn't changed Fowler's goal to an own goal...

posted by sauril at 10:49 AM on April 21, 2005

Sure sauril, but it'd be further if I'd remembered to take the captaincy off an injured Henry last week. That really was a fuck up of biblical proportions.

posted by squealy at 12:26 PM on April 21, 2005

par for the course of late. bill and I used inactive captains last week. though our players were in no way gonna play, an obvious fact known WELL in advance as compared to Henry who was ruled out by injury while his team was actually playing that week.

posted by gspm at 01:59 PM on April 21, 2005

oh. you're talking about the same week I am talking about. arsenal didn't play that week.

posted by gspm at 02:01 PM on April 21, 2005

that's bad, squealy. I've had some fuck ups like that so far this year, too. like leaving a two-game-playing, 9-point-getting defender on the bench while i left in someone who didn't play a few weeks ago. duuhhh...

posted by sauril at 02:13 PM on April 21, 2005

Swings and roundabouts sauril mate. I certainly won't be harping on about the Henry fuck up if you win it. These things happen, especially to drunks like me.

posted by squealy at 06:32 PM on April 21, 2005

Swings and roundabouts. Cockney slang? Hope me!

Ah. Thanks. btw, what the HELL is wrong with Liverpool? 0-1 Crystal Palace? Only 2 shots on goal after 70 minutes? They played all four strikers. What?

posted by worldcup2002 at 10:36 AM on April 23, 2005

Gambling with the captaincy and double transfers pays off sometimes at the sharp end of the season. Sometimes.

I'm glad I stayed with Lampard. Phew. I was going with Pedersen, until I read a late report he was being checked for a calf injury. He still played today, got a respectable 4 pts, but not the blinder he had last week. Maybe he'll prove me wrong and rake them in against WBA.

What a disappointing scoring week. Though why I thought Hoult with two matches would be preferable to one for Jaskaleinnen(sp?) is beyond me. Maybe Hasselbaink will come through against the sad sacks in Newcastle shirts.

I'm hoping for a 4-4 draw with the goals shared between JFH, Downing and Shearer.

Dear Fulham Manager Chris Coleman. Please do not play Mark Pembridge on Wednesday. If you do this favor for me then the 15 pts I have sitting under the name of Peter Crouch, first one off my bench, will be added to my score. Alternatevly, Charlton manager Alan Curbishley please do not play defender Talal El Karkouri against Man Utd tomorrow. Same reasoning applies.

posted by gspm at 12:23 PM on April 30, 2005

Please play both Pembridge and El Karkouri, Mr Coleman and Mr Curbishley. You know it makes sense. I watched Liverpool v Boro via what I think was a Korean feed of ESPN today on my puter thanks to Coolstreaming. Not the biggest or best quality picture and a bit jerky at times but I'd cautiously recommend it to my fellow footie addicts with broadband. Downside is that certainly on pc's as crap as mine it makes it virtually impossible to use the interweb while you're watching.

posted by squealy at 01:51 PM on April 30, 2005

Ok, please play both Pembridge and El Karkouri and make them score three goals apiece in shutout victories. Against squealy's team.

posted by gspm at 03:06 PM on April 30, 2005

Play Pembridge and El Karkouri and for sure let's get McBride another goal in that game.

bloody inaccurate injury news. "Crouch is doubtful..." Bah!

posted by garfield at 10:46 AM on May 02, 2005

which would be why I put him on the bench, methinks. i don't know exactly why now, just regreting it unless pembridge conks his head before the match tomorrow. (or Pires tonight. thought I am sure he's got some value seeing as he's playing west brom).

posted by gspm at 01:03 PM on May 02, 2005

GREAT. Mark Pembridge steps in but Chris Coleman is otherwise expected to name an unchanged team... I hate this game. I've got 15 pts sitting on the bench with I guy I put there because in order to use the double gameweek Pembridge and possibly an injury rumour. Then Pembridge doesn't even play the first game (rendering that advantage moot) and the injury rumour is false. On the other hand, Sauril is gonna get those 15 pts, seemingly by luck unless his strategy is to have an injured player that hasn't played in weeks as his first sub (don't question it). I thought last year that my late season slide down a few places to 6th was due to not paying as much attention to the schedule as I could have. So I've paid more attention this year (save for the recent Lampard is my captain, Chelsea doesn't play this week debacle) and there are still ways to trip up. GRRR. I guess there's slight hope. Pembridge is playing Newcastle so he's got the potential to EXPLODE for 2 appearance points.

posted by gspm at 07:10 AM on May 03, 2005

Can I just say that all of you who had double-gameweek players but picked Lampard as skipper instead are idiots. Lucky, lucky idiots. BBC site says Pembridge will play tomorrow night. Let's hope they're right and that Shearer gets a hattrick to boot.

Liverpool in the Champions League final! Whooooooo!

posted by worldcup2002 at 03:46 PM on May 03, 2005

that was something. plenty of drama, full credit to the Reds. I've yet to see a convincing view of their goal, thought. I will say that the people on the field must have had a better view than the cameras did AND the Chelsea players who would have had most reason to passionately disagree with the call did not. as the announcer (on ESPN at least) said, any time that beats Juventus 2-1 at home and holds them 0-0 on the road and then holds Chelsea 0-0 on the road and beats them 1-0 at home deserves to progress.

posted by gspm at 04:08 PM on May 03, 2005

Oh for fuck's sake, Souness is resting my skipper Shearer (who was only signed and made skipper because he had two double gameweeks on the trot). This game has to be the most frustrating, irritating and addictive thing ever invented. That was never a Liverpoo goal btw. Though to be honest if it hadn't been given I suspect they'd have been awarded a penalty and maybe Cech would have been sent off too.

posted by squealy at 04:44 PM on May 03, 2005

A well deserved result for Liverpool (and boy was their defense amazing today).

posted by trox at 05:12 PM on May 03, 2005

I just finished watching-THANK YOU MR TIVO!!!-and my wife nearly called the EMTs when I was screaming the last three minutes of extra time and afterwards. As Tommy Smythe observed, there was barely a nail left in the stands after that early goal. What great defense! Finally played up to our potential even without Alonso. Baros and Luis Garcia ran their asses off and Hyppia and Carragher were walls of concrete. W00T W00T W00T W00T W00T W00T W00T W00T!!!

posted by squealy at 02:02 PM on May 04, 2005

Luck luck luck will hopefully be coming to me. I dropped Crouch as i heard he was injured, and then tried to put him back in after I heard Duff wouldn't be playing after all. The subs order was generated automatically. squealy, i have no idea if that was a goal or not, but if it wasn't called, it should have been a penalty and a red card to Cech, although I suspect that ref would have chickened out and gone with a yellow. How Carvahlo escaped without getting booked is beyond me. Garcia probably should have been booked too...
