It's crowded at the top! only 11 points separate 1st and 3rd...

remember that time when the Blammos were in 20th?

posted by gspm at 05:52 PM on March 18, 2005

Only 19 points separating first and fourth! Wonder how Henry's (likely to be from what I've read) one game absence will impact the next few rounds.

Last week was the least perfect week to sell Henry. Guess which genius did.

Much better performance from me this week (30). And Liverpool goes into the 2nd half against Everton 2-0 up. Maybe they'll let Riise start moving up freely and taking potshots. I need a Riise hattrick!

Guess which genius chose this week to make Earnshaw 3rd sub.

i sold Hasselbaink because he was injured. the kind of injured that involves scoring a goal this week. erg. so he had as many points this week (while "injured") as he'd had in the last three weeks combined. admittedly i was going by news on thursday rather than EPL fantasy status but that just seems indicative of my gradual slide towards 4th. booo.

posted by gspm at 05:43 PM on March 20, 2005

Hasselbaink is always injured, yet he plays all the time, what the hell?!!?

posted by StarFucker at 06:48 PM on March 20, 2005

I sold hasselbaink after reading that he was gone for the rest of the season. grrrrr... epl fantasy status is so often wrong that I usually ignore it.

Looks like Liverpool and Birmingham fans were smiling after this weekend's derbies. Altho I must say I'm not sure if the Pool will be playing any strikers at the next match: Morientes knackered, Garcia should've been playing on crutches all of the second half, Baros sent off, Kewell, Mellor, S-P, Cisse all out for the season. Maybe they can put Biscan upfront and he can just scare the opposing defense with his third leg. GRAAAAARGH!

posted by worldcup2002 at 08:36 PM on March 21, 2005

We need a medical miracle for the first 10 days of April, that's for sure. Can Biscan's Wonder Wagger bring one on?

ESPN2 will have the Liverpool-Juventus match live Tuesday, no excuses for missing but please no spoilers since I have to work and then watch. MLS starts tomorrow and I know how excited that makes StarFucker. None of us remembered to create a fantasy league so I guess goddam will not be repeating her title. Me, I'm more than a little unhappy that Donovan is in LA and that AEG screwed us over in favor of their better-loved team.

i'm starting to know how Big Calm was feeling after Christmas.

posted by gspm at 06:10 PM on April 02, 2005

Big talk, WC, when it's your Hibbert and Cahill vs. gspm's Osman, an injury sub (for Keane) and a 12 point gap. But I kid because I'm in third, Liverpool won and Everton is going to settle for a scoreless draw against a team looking to take advantage of Southampton's bad run to try and get out of the relegation zone.

posted by billsaysthis at 12:20 AM on April 03, 2005

Yeah, Keane had an outburst about being benched yesterday. I'll give an outburst too for a player of that fantasy value not playing when healthy. it seems tricky picking some second tier players from deep teams like Man U and Arsenal when they don't always seem to get a game even when healthy but I thought picking a Tottenham player would avoid that problem. oh well.

posted by gspm at 11:28 AM on April 03, 2005

Looks like my instincts were correct last night, Mr. WC, I almost added "or Toffees to go down 1-0" but didn't want to jinx WBA. So much for climbing into fourth, you're not even close and that's without any sub points for gspm. Squealy and Sauril had excellent weekends and have widened the gap from me considerably, Blammos OTOH had a miserable time of it (Drogba as captain?).

posted by billsaysthis at 02:08 PM on April 03, 2005

Everton lost! Go WBA! I'm not happy about the fantasy points, but seeing how Everton lost to bottom team WBA, and Liverpool are only a point behind, I think it's a happy weekend overall. I think I'm poised for a pretty strong run-in, so let's see how the remaining weeks turn out.

posted by worldcup2002 at 02:40 PM on April 03, 2005

heh, may your "I'll be in 4th" hubris see you only fall further behind. i gave up 8 points on transfers to clear out some injury and deadwood types but bill would've jumped me this week even if i kept that lineup and didn't give up the points. that 50 point gap I see to get me near the top again - OUCH. i don't think i've been that far out of touch in months. and recent my form does not suggest any upward surges any time soon.

posted by gspm at 08:52 PM on April 03, 2005

My major mistake this week was not making Henry captain. I wasn't certain he'd be fit and thought Lampard was a safer bet. Henry always scores a hat-trick if you rob him of the captaincy, it happened last season too. Aside from that super Zoltan Gera repaid my reborn faith in him. This is the second spell he's spent in my squad this season and he proving to be a real steal. I was in the pub yesterday watching the Baggies play Everton and believe me I was out of my seat cheering when Gera headed in the winner. I know some Blues fans that wouldn't agree but I want the Baggies to survive and Southampton to go down in their place. I have nowt against the Baggies and it strikes me that it's about time Southampton took the drop that they flirted with for so long.

Oh btw, have you seen the game lineup for Gameweek 33 (or lack of it)? There's gonna be some tears before bedtime that week and that's for sure.

posted by squealy at 06:52 AM on April 04, 2005

Squealy, that is a weird one--no Arsenal, Chelsea, ManU or Everton.

posted by squealy at 05:25 PM on April 04, 2005

thanks for the heads up. I need to pay attention to that stuff. no newcastle then either I guess.... So if anyone had bowyer, I wonder if they awarded negative points...

posted by sauril at 07:01 PM on April 04, 2005

Bowyer got -1 point. Probably similar to what I deserve for giving a heads up to my nearest challenger. As things stand my whole midfield is missing that gameweek as well as Henry. However, the rearranged games are played so quickly after week 33 there's not a huge amount to be gained from drastic team changes IMHO.

posted by squealy at 04:54 AM on April 05, 2005

But anyone who wishes to waste precious points on drastic team changes should go right ahead and do it. IMHO.

posted by worldcup2002 at 11:35 PM on April 05, 2005

squealy, looking at our respective teams, I have to think that you're in the driver's seat. My forward line pales in comparison to yours, and with Henry out that game week, I'll only have one playing. Most of my midfield is out as well, and my defence has been a little suspect lately... We'll see I guess.

posted by sauril at 12:01 PM on April 06, 2005

Who knows? I reckon it'll be close. I managed to beat a bloke who'd led all season in another mini-league last year. The only time I was top was the last week of the season - thanks to the mighty Yakubu as I remember. And I'm sure we all remember Fat Buddha's thrilling last minute sprint to the top of the SpoFi league the season before that. Or as we say in Britain, football's a funny old game Saint.

where's the Liverpool crowd with anything to say on yesterday's match in what seems to be the only active footie thread here? are there any good keepers in the EPL (Cech aside I guess)? ones that don't have a big blunder to call their own?

posted by gspm at 02:02 PM on April 06, 2005

that Garcia strike was wicked. anyone got a link to video?

posted by garfield at 02:27 PM on April 06, 2005

Come on gspm, how can you blame a 19 year old kid making his first CL start (and only second or third over all non-friendlies) for Liverpool for giving up one goal against a European powerhouse? I think the blame goes to Finnan who was reasonably useless at the defensive end and not much better elsewhere. Carson gave a better than expected performance, IMO, and the confidence gained should do him well next Wednesday on the return leg. Garcia's was a season highlight quality touch, he just timed the bounce and energy perfectly so Buffon had no chance. Le Tallec, speaking of another player getting a first runout in serious competition, set him up sweetly and made me forget how many injured strikers we have. One game is hardly a track record but now I'm definitely interested to see if he can push himself deeper into Benitez's plans over the next two months. Speaking of our manager, can someone explain to me the logic of subbing Nunez for Baros and Smicer for Le Tallec after the Juve goal? Who was supposed to be making a third, suddenly very useful, goal? Gerrard, you say? Right and where was he the entire second half? But 2-1 is 2-1 and means we have a reasonable chance to get to the next round.

if there is any interest in this, you can thank my cool girlfriend.

posted by garfield at 04:28 PM on April 06, 2005

i'm not blaming him, they won the game after all. but it seems like all the top EPL teams are having a tough time settling on a go-to keeper when they've seemingly all had flubs that have been groaners. sure it happens to everybody, but maybe it is the focus on the top teams that magnifies such flubs. I don't remember much about the southhampton keeper flubbing one but probably because they aren't in high profile matches. it'd be nice if Garcia used some of his champions league prowess in the EPL if only because he's in my squad.
