Ask Spofi: So, what was the last live sporting event that you attended?

I was gonna say Flames v Wild (2-2 tie) but I remembered that, more recently, I saw the Coventry Blaze 5-1 over the Belfast Giants (both events being ice hockey matches).

Southend United vs York City. Although I hesitate to call it an event. It was barely even sport.

Last pro game I went to was a Tigers/Devil Rays game this past season (you wanna talk about easy tickets to get...) Last sporting event was my weekly hockey game with the guys this past Saturday. I was relegated to spectator status because I pulled my hammy the day before slipping on all the snow and ice we got a day or two before...

Mavs vs. Lakers. My friend got it in his 10-game package hoping it would be a good game. However, without Shaq, Kobe, or Malone, it was by far the most uncompetitive Mavs game I've been to this year (I've gone to 4 so far).

Devils vs. Capitals - on Scott Stevens day, prior to the Jagr to NYR deal. If you ever get a chance to experience a game at the Meadowlands with the 'Winners' package (private entrance/exit, horrendously waitered restaurant, private smoking section outside, access to fully stocked bar all game), check it out. The best part for me was walking around with a Captain and Coke.

Panthers loss to the Eagles in the regular season, that loss would be avenged, but everything ended up sucking anyway.

Giants vs. Panthers. club seats, which are similar to garfield's 'Winners' package. most exciting part of the evening was seeing the ref get knocked out after a blocked punt.

Senators 7, Maple Leafs 1. Before that it was the Vanier Cup, and before that an Argos game.

Arizona vs. Washington State women's basketball game, uh, over a month ago. It is open seating, so it is possible to get good seats if you are early. We sat right behind the bench.

posted by eckeric at 10:28 AM on February 05, 2004

Blue Jackets 2, Wild 1 (Anders Eriksson scored in OT for the win). Before that I saw the Bengals sadly defeated by the Browns in Cincinnati for the last game of the season. Also, a big drunken brawl broke out in my section. Exciting times, that. And before that I saw the Jackets play in October and slaughter the Rangers 5-0.

Devils vs. Capitals - on Scott Stevens day with garfield and the Captain. The Meadowlands are a mere ten minutes from home so even as a Ranger fan I find trips to the Swamp easy and entertaining. Before that I braved the cold for back-to-back Redskin games. The first was versus the Giants at the Meadowlands. A win! The following week the cold came with rain and disgrace against the hated Cowboys at FedEx. Succa, that Senators vs Maple Leafs must have been a fun one for you, huh? Can't wait for tonight's game.

A Rochester Red Wing baseball game (AAA) that I do not remember. Chances are, they lost. Why couldn't you have waited to ask this question? I am going to check out the new Phillies stadium this spring.

Last professional hockey game: Toronto Roadrunners vs Rochester Americans, December 27th 2003. (AHL) Last NHL game: Toronto Maple Leafs vs Philadelphia Flyers, January 19th 2002. (ticket prices preclude me from attending any games in the near future) Last professional baseball game: London Monarchs vs Trois-Rivieres Saints, June 14th 2003. (defunct CBL) Last MLB game: Toronto Blues vs Boston Red Sox, June 1st 2003. (moving to a new house during the summer made attending games almost impossible) Last professional football game: Buffalo Bills vs Indianapolis Colts, exact date forgotten. (about 5 years ago or so, the Bills came from behind in the second half, after Flutie replaced Johnson...my dad and I used to go to one game a year, but haven't had a schedule that worked in our favour since then)

September 25, 2003. Red Sox against the Orioles. They clinched the Wild Card and the place went Wild. The entire team ran out to the mound in a 5 minute hug. The players ran around high fiving the fans, throwing some t-shirts out into the stands, and then some of the players ran out of the park (in their uniforms and cleats, went into some of the bars around the park and they bartended for a couple hours and hung out with the fans.

Birmingham City vs Newcastle Utd last Saturday. An excellent game of football considering the terrible conditions, and we got our deserved equaliser in injury time. Better still I used someone else's season ticket for nowt.

Succa, that Senators vs Maple Leafs must have been a fun one for you, huh? Can't wait for tonight's game. Best money I ever spent. Tonight should be a great one...although I just heard a rumour that a bunch of Sens left practice with the flu today! Ack!

PHX Suns vs. Atlanta Hawks. I think it was a basketball game, but I couldn't say that for sure given the way both teams played. The seats were the best seats I've ever had for a basketball game though (4 rows off the floor).

posted by trox at 01:46 PM on February 05, 2004

Damn, trox, you've got a higher tolerance for pain than I do. Not really, I would have gone to the game, too. But what's up with people leaving before the game is over? At last night's Lakers-Cavaliers game, a bunch of people were leaving with 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter, in a game that went to overtime! If you've stayed to watch 95%, can it hurt to stick around for the finale?

Go to sports in person? Are you all nuts, you know what kind of people go to stadiums and arenas? Seriously, I've had a strange bathroom-related illness for over 20 years now and rarely go into buildings with 15,000 other people. Unless the management is willing to lock one men's room and give me exclusive use for the event. I did see a Devils match at Byrne Arena in 1990 or 91 and a Jets-Eagles game around the same time in Giant Stadium. One Giants game in the '80s sometime. Oh god, the memories!

Raptors at Clippers. I sat in a Staples Center Luxury Box courtesy of the girlfriends' relatives. Big ups to my government peeps! Vince Carter laid down some nasty in that game. There was some Darius Miles related activity. I cannot confirm or deny whether Dell Curry does in fact have a freakishly large head.

billsaysthis: I have the perfect solution for you. Move to Raleigh and become a Hurricanes fan. The RBC Center has family restrooms that are for a single person and the door locks. It's great. I can eat the heck out of a Indian restaurant buffet for lunch and not worry about anything later on while at the game. Heh heh, too much information, nothing! Besides, since the 'Canes are sucking the big one right now, you won't have to worry about the 15K+ people problem.

posted by NoMich at 09:43 PM on February 05, 2004

NoMich, I'm guessing there's a long line for this single person restroom. My issue is not other people being present, it's more the lack of being able to get a toilet soon enough because of lines. Ufez: LOL

It's either a Raptors game (as viewed from the restaurant seats... great seats) vs. some team. This is over a year ago. Carter had a nice dunk in the game, and the Raps won in overtime thanks to a comeback (in part due to a foul on a last second three point shot by Carter. He got all three free throws to tie the game and send it to OT). Great game. Before that, it was a Leafs win over Tamba Bay. They were down 1-0 in the second, but they won 7-1 (if I remember correctly). That was fun too. Also great seats -- golds behind the net. How about that game yesterday, Succa? Niiiice

posted by billsaysthis at 11:24 AM on February 06, 2004

bill, with this newest revelation and showergate, you let some crazy shit drop in the lockerroom. Go Leafs Go.

posted by garfield at 11:54 AM on February 06, 2004

That was the most bizarre game ever. Letting the Leafs come back sucked, but it's hard to feel too bad about losing in overtime when the team had one-half of one-third of its players still standing. If not for some poor goaltending by Lalime it could have been a very embarrassing loss for the Leafs. Hard to come away from a game like that with any kind of lessons learned, save that we need a new goalie ASAP.

Last one I was at was one of the last Tigers games at Tiger stadium. Which was if I recall correctly about four years ago. Damn. Of course, they lost the game.

posted by deadcowdan at 11:04 PM on February 06, 2004

And since bathrooms have been brought up, Tiger stadium had the most lovely urinals I've ever seen. It was like walking up to a long, thigh-height sink that 20 other guys were also standing in front of, and letting it all hang out. I can imagine that any males with, uh, performance anxiety in urine-producing probably had nightmares about the place.

posted by deadcowdan at 11:10 PM on February 06, 2004

Carolina Panthers at Falcons back in December. Vick's homecoming party. It was the first time in a long time that I ever thought of Atlanta as a pro sports town. Atlanta won 20-14 in OT. If Vick can stay healthy, then the Falcons can go a long way. Every time he touched the ball, the fans stood up. Now I heard the commentators on ESPN went over the top in praising him, but what I saw was pretty amazing. A rather quiet night of passing (16-33, 179yds) but his rushing stats of 14 carries for 141yds made him a true double threat.

posted by usfbull at 12:11 AM on February 07, 2004

ahhh yes deadcowdan, the good old fashioned urine trough. Maple Leaf Gardens had those too, and it was definitely... different. Though I guess when you are 12 or so, it doesn't really bother you too much.

posted by mkn at 10:56 PM on February 07, 2004

Rich Stadium (or whatever the Bills call home now) also is a "trough" system. Even worse, when it gets busy the locals don't wait their turn and instead use the large circular hand-washing devices as a "trough". You learn to hold it for 3 hours when you go to a game...
