I've jumped back onto the RSS bandwagon and I've been resubscribing to many, many feeds. One was to be the Sportsfilter feed, but there's some issues I'd like to see addressed. More inside...

I guess the most obvious one is the fact that there's an extra line-break before the XML declaration. This is bad, mmmkay? Additionally, can we have some more relevant titles for the posts? Something more MeFi like, for example. posted by worldcup2002 to Other November 25 6:53 PM doesn't really tell me much about the actual post. Also, is there a way to get it to display more items? Right now it seems to display just the current day. I'd rather have the full front page, if possible. Administrator! Hope me!

Wanna give the slightly clueless an idea of: 1) What the RSS feed does/is? 2) How you "view" it (other than clicking that link and getting XML'd to death)? 3) Some way for us RSS newbies to get in on the fun. 4) Some other RSS feeds. Thanks.

Is this RSS something I'd need to live in the 21st century to know about?

posted by squealy at 09:02 AM on November 26, 2003

RSS is a syndication format. The idea is that you can get the raw data (e.g., grum, as a Canadian, you'll want to visit this daily) and do whatever you like with it presentation-wise. I've yet to find any can't-live-without RSS feeds, but you can grab yourself a reader and start checking them out (Mozilla/ Firebird has a nice plugin that you can run in a sidebar).

I've fixed the line break and expanded the feed from 24 to 96 hours, but I can't do anything about titles unless we start requiring users to write them, as MetaFilter now does. I thought about duplicating the first part of the description in the title, but that would look terrible in Radio UserLand and presumably other RSS newsreaders.

I didn't know there was a newsfeed for SpoFi! A link to the RSS feed would be a nice addition to the site... Mac users: NetNewsWire is a great newsreader for OS X. There is a freeware "Lite" version that will work for most people.

what I really want to know is: How do I republish the feeds on my site, say, with the blogging tool that I use? Example, say I want to have a little sidebar on my site that just shows the latest five posts from SpoFi. Is a newsreader or some other thingamajig required to parse the jigazmatron into some usable pablum? Can I use some open source tool online without having to install it on my machine? Make it easy?

There are a lot of ways to incorporate RSS feeds on a Web site, such as JavaScript, PHP, Java, and server-side includes. What tools are you using to publish a site?

WC, since when do you have a website? Anyway, email me offline, I have some PHP code that will do the trick, I think.

I have a website, oh yes, and I think you can guess it from my email addy, mr bill. Oh yes, contrary to appearances, my site serves as an offshore shell bank and tax shelter as well as an exchange for the porn, gaming and file-sharing industries. On occasion, we intermittently act as an interchange mechanism for various armament procurement transactions. We use the latest in hi-tech technology like MnMs, ABC and LOL. Oh yes.

yes, but do you have sharks with lasers?

posted by jerseygirl at 05:26 PM on November 26, 2003

NO. That would be cruel. But we do have dolphins with scissors.

I'm reporting you to The Man, WC!

Thanks rcade. I'm not sure why you'd think that a short excerpt would look terrible, though. Certainly it'd be better than how it currently is, no? For those that use Firebird, and are looking for an RSS Reader, I suggest this extension. Pretty basic, but it gets the job done.

Are the dolphins ill-tempered?
