Fantasy Hockey Week 4. After three weeks occupying numero uno, the Arrogant Champs are finally dethroned by the Ice-O-Topes. Les colecos and Sammy's Ice Holes (as per usual) round out the top four, and are followed by a log-jam: a mere two points separates fifth from eighth. Gloating inside...

last week's results Rocket Richard Award: Arrogant Champs, with a total of 41 goals, many of which came on the power play. Norris Award: concussion central, with a staggering +40. +19 more than second place Corporate Pigdogs. Firing Squad Award: vagabonds, whose goalies have faced 669 shots (and still managed to score a 2.13 GAA) Losing Ground Award: Corporate Pigdogs, falling a mere three spots during a week with little overall movement. Week of Gloating Award: me! Coming from eighth to first, primarily on the play of Yzerman and Shanahan (51 combined PIM against Nashville alone) Now that we're a month in, we can see statistical trends and patterns emerging. One interesting thing worth noting is that everyone has a GAA average in the 2.XX range (which, if anything, really highlights how goals are down this year -- again).

this week I am going to break the top 10! maybe. my team is getting dragged down by the +/- which is surprising considering the impression I have about my team (ie i thought they'd be in the +). they could also afford to throw a few more punches. Chris Simon was added to the mix to possibly see about that and with Leclair playing now maybe he can mix something up. Any chance of adding a form guide column to the table? Now that the season is progressing maybe a 5 week running positional history might be interesting (but it might be dumb, who knows, but it might be easy if you have the standings archived in a spreadsheet or something). I am running 6-11-12-11. blah.

Congrats, mkn! I'm just glad it's not grum. Don't get too comfortable, though. The only categories that are really holding me back are shot % and PIMS. I'll drop a few scorers and pick up a few goons at the end of the season and be right back up to 8 or 9 in PIMS at the end. I'll be back, you chumps.

BTW, what's a form guide column?

I'd like to thank the high scoring Canucks for their team contributions. Keep it up fellas. and, sorry, but anyone who has broken the 100-pt barrier this season, you're going down....now if only the Flames could win the Western Conference behind self-deprecating Jamie McLennan, and Luongo could backstop the Pumas to the post-season.

samsonov14 - another column on the table that contains what one might call a 'form guide' or a quick guide to form (yeah, I'd never heard the term before relocating to the UK last year). in the EPL the form guide for a team (as seen in previews of matches) would be like WWLLDWL for the most recent sequence of gamea (wins draws and losses starting with the most recent week). in this case the form guide might offer up the positions in the standings for the last five weeks. I started in 6th and have been 11th, 12th and 11th since then. It might be more interesting to have mkn's surge from 8th to 1st remembered for more than a couple of weeks (though it may only last a day with the standings being so volatile so his being in first on the day of an update might be arbitrary but i guess you draw the line somewhere). I don't really pay attention to who is at the top of the table since I am nowhere near it. I might pay more attention to all you good teams if I had a little reminder about who has been on top recently. the funny thing about "form" - there is an optimisitc assumption that a team is playing well when they are "in form" even if they are the crappiest team going. you would imagine that a crappy team's default form is, in fact, crappy and thus when they are playing crappy they are playing to form but that is, sadly, not the case.

A disappointing week for sure. A lot of my guys just aren't performing. Fortunately I should creep up the standings a bit once Ottawa starts playing more than a game a week. What's going on with the HackTheBone situ?

I attribute my one-week slump to *gasp* 2nd place entirely on the injuries to Forsberg and Blake. By the way, if anyone is looking to deal a D, lemme know. Oh, and one more thing. You all suck.

At one time this week, I was first overall without leading any individual category. I see this as a clear sign that my team is the most balanced. My mentor has thaught me that constructing a fantasy team is like preparing Muslix cereal: harmony and balance between the ingredients make it a winner. Therefore, I shall overcome. Commish notes: I was absolutely certain that I had added Philippe Boucher back into Hack the Bone's lineup. wfrazerj, could you please drop him so that I can reconstruct the original team? Thanks. Now, what do we do with therev's players? Since we haven't heard from him, I assume he doesn't want to hand his team to one of the eager non-managers in here. There is also mookieproof who hasn't made a move since Oct. 14. If he quits too, that would make a more interesting pool of players for a mini-draft. There would be some interesting guys even for us leaders. Has anybody seen Mookieproof around here recently, or contacted him in any fashion?

dropping Legace? curious move.

You can take the top spot from Friday to Wednesday, if you want. If I can grab it every Thursday, I'll be satisfied! My guys need to start scoring more goals. I only have one player with more than three. At least everyone is pretty balanced, but still... I'm nearly 20 goals behind grum!

posted by mkn at 03:09 PM on November 07, 2003

About Legace: I know it's early, but he doesn't look very sharp. Besides, he doesn't seem to be getting enough playing time to make it worth it. That Leighton kids is doing well AND getting ice time. It's a gamble but we'll see who makes a claim on him and who they drop...

putting it that way...I want to see who they drop as well.

I'm feeling better and better about picking up Raycroft as my third goalie early in the season. First in the league in SV%, 2nd in GAA. Right now, he's better than my two others (Belfour and Lalime). Anyone else picked up any surprises? And I want Patrice Bergeron back, dammit. I can't believe I picked up that kid only to drop him a few games later.

posted by Samsonov14 at 01:36 PM on November 09, 2003

My surprises are: M.Czerkawski (goals aplenty) T.Hunter and J.King (why were these guys unclaimed so late?!) C.Osgood (kicking butt)

Drury's been good for me since the start. 13 points, 12 PIM in 15 games, with a +3 (in Buffalo, no less!)

My luck with the 'Nuck, combined with Kvasha, J. Williams, some decent D pick ups, and Zhitnik throwing down 15 PIMs last night, has helped fuel a small climb up the ladder.

I knew King was sitting out there, but T.Hunter came out of nowhere. You think he's the real deal?

posted by garfield at 05:12 PM on November 10, 2003

I think he's the real deal for this year. Would I draft him in a competitive long-term league? Not sure, but for a single season league with no consequences, I'd hang on to him until he went into a protracted slump (10+ games) or gets injured. King seemed to be the more obvious choice, but Hunter had a nice combo of +/- and goals and was playing for a team that seemed to be doing well putting the puck in the net. That 90' goal was a nice fluke though. :)
