Whitey-drivel. Self-links. Happening frequently lately. Are new users just not getting it?

Is there something more we, as a community, can do to help prevent these occurances, or are these opportunistic people just going to get through, no matter what?

So far all we know is that Whitey is a contributor there. Are we sure it is a self-link?

posted by vito90 at 09:27 AM on November 04, 2003

i'd be willing to wager a sausage calzone that its a self-link...hmm...almost lunch time.

and not to be selfish, but whitey stole my local liquor store moniker.

if he had submitted an actual sports story link to discuss and gave us the old "as found on..." addendum I would say no harm, no foul (provided it isn't at the end of every single post he'd do). but there is nothing in the post worth sharing here or worth discussing. it is an uninspired way of getting some free traffic from one sports blog to another. yellow card.

Whitey has posted 1 link and to SportsFilter and no threads and no comments to the Locker Room I'd say it was a get hits and run job.

Whitey's the publisher of SportsDrivel.Com.

I still think this guy didn't know the guidelines. It's not a bad site. Let it go. This too will pass. Maybe this guy will spread the word about Sportfilter. I enjoy being a jerkass more than most, but let's just let this die. If he was a real self-poster, then whatever. Maybe people will come here from his site. And no, I don't know this guy. I know 86, garfield, and I've exchanged emails with succa. We're getting mean, and it concerns me. It's okay to make fun of billy, but this is a bit much.

For the record, Billy you suck. Billy. I kid becauseI love.

sammy, i see where your sympathy comes from, being Whitey's first link and all, but I don't by the innocent rap; isn't self-linking frowned upon everywhere? and not that I personally care either way, (I learned it by watching you [points finger]) it seems to be well-practiced protocol here, both on the self-linkers and the spofi mob's part. at the same time, I need to chill with the venom.

posted by garfield at 03:35 PM on November 04, 2003

sweet. we're a mob now?

We have been nice -- he still has an account.

zoinks.

posted by jerseygirl at 04:14 PM on November 04, 2003

maybe that was the wrong word...I was referring the to frequent posters, myself included. though, it's kind of exciting to be a part of a mob. mom never let me join that gang that hung out under the overpass, so maybe spofi is filling some sort 'mob' vacuum.

Goddamn it, all I know is removing the link erased my Garrett Morris lyrics, and that, by God, is highly regrettable.

Sammy, how is it that I deserved your attentions for the vitriol?

posted by billsaysthis at 06:53 PM on November 04, 2003

To answer the original question, I think the self-linking problem is a consequence of SportsFilter's growing popularity. We'll probably need to institute a trial period in which new members can't post to the front page.

i gave it some thought on the way home last night (i have a long commute) and there probably isn't much we can do to stop this. Opportunists are opportunists and if they see somewhere they can self link and self promote, they will. I don't know if it's a matter of banning accounts or what-have-you, because generally these people aren't interested in joining the spofi family anyway in the long term.] fraz - the link still works. click the first LR link in my initial post here.

Jsut lashing out, Bill. I'm probably still upset because you're a Devils fan.

posted by Samsonov14 at 12:03 PM on November 05, 2003

Trial period or minimum comments before getting FPP-ing priveledges would probably deter some. More than anything though, it's not that big of a deal so long as it gets deleted quickly and there aren't any second or third offenses.

Sammy, I understand your pain. No problem.

I know, Jgirl, but I was envisioning an entire thread of SNL quotes. *sigh* Oh well, nevermind.

When I die, I would like to go peacefully, in my sleep, like my Grandfather did. Not screaming and yelling like the passenger in his car. I knew this thread would get productive eventually.

One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going to take my little nephew to Disneyland, but instead I drove him to an old burned-out warehouse. "Oh, no," I said. "Disneyland burned down." He cried and cried, but I think that deep down, he thought it was a pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but it was getting pretty late. Best. Jack Handy. Ever.

If you ever fall off the Sears Tower, just go real limp, because maybe you'll look like a dummy and people will try to catch you because, hey, free dummy. My fave.
