I created a Yahoo Premiership Fantasy League...come one, come all!

Damn. I saw this over the weekend and had to hold myself back from posting it. I don't think I want to play two leagues, but it still is the easiest of the bunch. I'm gonna wait to see how many people join.

Crap. This is going to really mess up my Saturdays. My guess is I will start playing this more if I join, just because it's simpler. Which means I will probably suck more at the Premierleague.com league. And then again, maybe not.

posted by worldcup2002 at 12:40 PM on August 12, 2003

Quick questions: Is the yahoo! league better than last year? Do they have new features? Are things easier? I would've loved an extra column for each player showing their avg score (i.e., total fantasy pts scored divided by number of matches played). Man. This is going to reduce my goof-off time at work. Hahahahahahahahaha.

posted by worldcup2002 at 12:46 PM on August 12, 2003

Now I can dominate not one, but two leagues!

posted by trox at 01:35 PM on August 12, 2003

Look, wc2002, Yahoo is for simpletons while the other one is for connoisseur's. Please don't tell me you are too much of a cock to manage both.

Keep it up Trox old boy, we like a gobby git round here.

posted by jasonspaceman at 01:40 PM on August 12, 2003

No fucking way. We have a perfectly good fantasy league competition established with a healthy league of 27 players and counting on an excellent site. Why bother to create another one, it will only lead to confusion. Don't you think we have enough with one fantasy league? Do you people not have anything better to do with your lives? In summary, you can stick your Yahoo League where the sun don't shine.

posted by squealy at 01:52 PM on August 12, 2003

Fuck off out of our thread then.

i'd like to put my fantasy rota has open slots for hockey and basketball and i don't want to over-commit before those things get going. i'd rather have one pool going in soccer, one in hockey and one in basketball and feel like i don't have enough pools going that have too many going and feel like i am not giving it my best. my best isn't all that good sometimes, but it is what i can give. i'll pass, have fun. (does it have the "design your team kit" function too?)

posted by gspm at 02:45 PM on August 12, 2003

No, gspm, there is nothing as sophisticated as the design-a-kit function. As FB says, yahoo is for simpletons. Which is why SF and FB were the first to sign up. But seriously, folks, yahoo would've been my first choice if they hadn't dragged their asses setting the damn thing up. And been so sloppy about it in the interim. It really is very quick and easy to set up and play. My dilemma is not so much with yahoo as it is with doing two leagues. And having invested my time in researching and setting up the PremierLeague one, I would have to say I'm partial to it now (altho I continue to have a soft spot for the old yahoo!, incompetent staff and all). Maybe I won't feel so bad when yahoo starts getting into their update mix-ups and delays.

posted by worldcup2002 at 02:56 PM on August 12, 2003

Also, I encourage anyone -- who has the time -- to join both leagues, esp. if you're a fanatic or want to learn more about soccer. These will both get you engaged in the sport. I just don't think I'll have the time. Hmmmmm. I think you can see my ambivalence.

Haha, if everything had worked out nice, we coulda had the PremierLeague.com version be the Div 1, and the yahoo version be the EPL. Then, the top 3 in Div 1 would get promoted to the EPL for next season, and the bottom 3 EPL teams would drop to Div 1 for next season. (Or vice versa, of course.) Is everybody in yahoo also playing the PremierLeague version? We have at least 27 people, and could've split into 13- and 14-team leagues. Ah, champagne wishes, caviar dreams ... ... BUT WAITAMINUTE! We could just split the PremierLeague teams at the end of the season: Top half play in SpoFi "EPL" and the bottom half play in the SpoFi "Div 1" next season. (Doesn't matter which site hosts it; could both be yahoo! or any combo, I don't care.) New entrants from next season would enter Div 1. Anyway, this is just me being silly, trying to create a breakaway SuperLeague that will make absolutely no money.

posted by worldcup2002 at 09:26 PM on August 13, 2003

btw, FB, you can click Edit Team Info in the top right of your team page and change the team name at any time. Go, Terrace Yobs!

I LIKE IT!

posted by StarFucker at 11:07 PM on August 13, 2003

Just in case people were wondering about differences between yahoo and PremierLeague leagues: 1. Both are FREE 2. Both allow you to change your team names as often as you want. 3. Scoring updates PremierLeague: Claims they will do real-time, as-the-match-is-played scoring! I expect they will do a better job than yahoo. Yahoo: Claims to update 48 hrs after the last match is played. Both seasons I've played, things get sketchy in the middle and end of season, updates don't necessarily happen on time, and points have been added then taken away. But they finally get it right. 4. Interface PremierLeague: More complex, more features, yet still easy to use. Yahoo: Simple, simple, simple. 5. Team roster PremierLeague: 15, with 1 goalie sub and 3 outfield subs, auto-substitutes based on your ranking, if your first-choice players don't play. Only 3 players from the same real EPL team can be in the list of 15 at one time. Yahoo: 11, no subs, you can have as many players from one team as you want. 6. Formations PremierLeague: Pretty much anything as long as you have a keeper. Yahoo: Four - 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 3-4-3, 3-5-2 7. Team changes PremierLeague: One "free" transfer a week, up to half an hour before the first match kicks off. Additional transfers in the same week will cause point deductions. Yahoo: Unlimited transfers per week up to the deadline, usually 11:59pm UK time, the night before the first match of the week. 8. Prizes PremierLeague: Apparently will award prizes on a monthly basis, free tickets to a match. Yahoo: No prizes. Three more days! Whoooooo!

posted by worldcup2002 at 12:04 AM on August 14, 2003

But the original site (the non-Yahoo! one) is still preferred right? I'm only doing one. And I won't fold like wc2k2, where one will say that one won't participate in a league and then fold thirty minutes later. I still have no idea who more than half my team is.

posted by Ufez Jones at 01:02 AM on August 14, 2003

Wow, Ufez: Your need for me to be consistent appears to be stronger than my own. I think FB and SF understood my struggle with playing two leagues at once. I may still regret the decision but how could I resist, after last season's roaring success? And how sweet would it be, when I am king of not one, but TWO hills? Bwahahahahahaha.

posted by worldcup2002 at 01:23 AM on August 14, 2003

wc2002, I am afraid you have no chance. I was sorry for this: iniation?

posted by Fat Buddha at 02:54 AM on August 14, 2003

So, if you are a futbol lovin' knob like me, but one who couldn't recall a single player on each EPL team, which league ought I join? Conversely, which league would most welcome a simpleton like me to take advantage of?

posted by avogadro at 10:18 AM on August 14, 2003

Whichever one you decide on, you're sure to finish ahead of me. Can I recommend the Premier League one, as there's more people on that one?

posted by BigCalm at 10:28 AM on August 14, 2003

Join both. You require very little brain to do the yahoo one, the other one requires a bit of knowledge, to do well I suspect you will need to spend some time tweaking it. Yahoo is pure luck, no effort but great fun.

posted by Fat Buddha at 12:08 PM on August 14, 2003

Should I have my customary 3-4 week gap before signing up to give y'all a chance? ;) Actually, I have a Yahoo team already from my phone forum (Modaco), so I'll sign up to this one.. Ta da. Highest average points scorer from last season is in. Hehe. Yahoo is a ten minute a week jobbie. I approve :) That odd trophy shall be mine!

posted by worldcup2002 at 07:36 PM on August 15, 2003

I am serious! Dion Dublin better be good! For whatever reason yahoo won't allow me to add anyone to my 1st week lineup. My 2nd week lineup is full up though!

posted by lilnemo at 07:59 PM on August 15, 2003

Lilnemo: While PremierLeague.com lets you update until half-hour before the first kick-off, Yahoo only lets you update until 1159pm _British time_ the night before the kickoff. So that would be around 659pm EST/359pm PST. See rules. Excerpt: "The deadline to make lineup changes for the next week's games is 11:59 p.m. GMT (3:59 p.m. PT) every Friday (the first deadline is Friday, August 17, and the final deadline is Friday, May 10). Any change made after the deadline will not take effect until the following week." Of course, those dorks are using dates from two years ago.

Hahahahaha. I'm chuffed at the real-time individual points updates as well as the overall updating of the PremierLeague version. They really have their system figured out. My fantasy team performance is another thing entirely. Actually, I was surprised that my team, having three scorers, did so badly. I had Barry (who was sent off, unfortunately), Sheringham and Radzinski. Of course, they were all on losing teams. Under the PL.com version, that penalizes any good individual play. On yahoo, while they do give scorers of match-winners extra points, they don't penalize or reward players based on the team performance. So PL.com's version ties individual success more closely with team success, while yahoo's points are all about the individual. Nevertheless, there are more games to be played. We shall see how this week plays out in a couple of days. btw, who's doing the weekly update for the yahoo league? billsaysthis is already doing the PL.com league, right? So who will step up for this league?

Hah! WC2002, Barry is an undisciplined hothead, which is why despite the bleatings of Villa fans, Sven never picks him. Too true, there are more games to go, not just this weekend but over the whole season. He who laughs last etc. The fact that you get few points for goal scorers illustrates how this one is so much more difficult, and subtle. Thank God we have Yahoo for some light relief. I was really pissed off this morning trying to get Amoruso in my team I missed the deadline by seconds. It's gonna be fun. Note the leaders are participating in both, so it can't be that chuffing difficult.
