Probably not the right place to ask, but is MeFi down? Couldn't get on last night from home, or now from work. I miss my daily dose of IraqFilter.

Won't ping. Won't respond to http traffic. DNS lookup is fine. I'd say it's down.

I won't pretend to know what you're talking about in the first sentence there BigCalm, but thanks for checking. Admin, feel free to delete this un-SpoFi related thread if you so choose.

"ping": if you go to a C: prompt in Windows (I'm assuming Windows here -- just select Run from the start menu and type "cmd") and type, "ping www.sitename.com", you'll run a ping test on the site in question. It's a good way to test if the problem is on your end or theirs.

posted by yerfatma at 08:38 AM on March 25, 2003

Errr, thanks yerfatma. I should have said first three sentences. ;-)

posted by squealy at 09:15 AM on March 25, 2003

ping is sometimes unreliable, because ping packets are sometimes blocked by firewalls due to the great Ping Of Death. http. Tested by telnet to port 80 of the site in question. DNS lookup. Within ping, by typing C:ping www.metafilter.com It should respond with Pinging metafilter.com [209.10.108.201] with 32 bytes of data: You can tell it's done it's DNS lookup successfully because the IP address is present.

Thanks worldcup2002. It's not so much the news I was after, it was more getting out the popcorn, putting my feet up and watching the same pointless arguments going on ad nauseum.

We could attempt to create the same feel here. (by the way admins, feel free to delete this thread). I'll start.

I pick up on something from 132 comments ago and rant on and on for umpteen paragraphs until nobody even knows what point I was trying to make. Hahahaha. This is much better than actual discussion. We are having ... Meta-discussion. We are brilliant.

Completely out of context, poorly-phrased sexual innuendo about Jenna Bush. Squealy, get a load of this. Now that's some news! (sent to me by a fellow Spofer who I don't feel like giving credit to.)

Unearths that this is, actually, a double-post. Links to original FPP. Signs off smugly.

Suggestion that marching against war doesn't mean they support Saddam. Filled with many spelling mistakes and grammatical errors and is ignored by majority of the people because it isn't spouted by one of the bigwigs of mefi.
