Thought: based on this complaint at MeFi, should SpoFi have a rule against posting final scores/results in the FPP text itself when posting about to a recently completed game? Also: am I the very first to refer to this site as SpoFi, which is both a website and a delicious Italian dessert? Do I get some kind of royalties if SpoFi becomes the preferred short name? Discuss.

SpoFi?

SpoFi spooks me out. spores. spots. spo-love. i don't know what mite be better. just Spi, maybe? spilter? anyway, about scores on FPP posts. they should be discouraged IMO. besides the spoiler thing, it could encourage creativity in FPP if users had to work around this limitation. i really like when they do teasers on SportsCenter like "coming up next, the lakers visit dallas. could the mavericks wrangle shaq and kobe?"

how hard would it be to code a class='spoiler' for front page text? a user could then set a preference so that spoiler class text gets a "display: none;" style, or possibly the text could be replaced server-side with a "spoiler deleted" message. if users want to see spoilers, the text could be disp[layed normally. would this be just too ugly? could non-techie posters understand how to place spoiler info inside <span class='spoiler'> tags?

I say avoid the techie solution (of course, I'm not very techie myself) and just encourage people to avoid spoilers in the FPP's. And, no, you're not the first to coin the term SpoFi for this place. I used it a day ago in a different Locker Room thread (scroll down to my comment near end), and it has been used commonly during the development of this site.

How about spoilers go inside a [more] link, which reads [spoilers] instead? Simple and effective.

link? You know what I mean.

For the original question. If you are anticipating watching a taped/delayed match, don't log onto sportsfilter! Just like you wouldn't read the sports pages or watch sportscenter. If you want to live in a bubble, don't surf the internet. oh, and go terps.

For info, rec.sport.soccer has an etiquette of no scores in message headers which works pretty well. I don't think it's reasonable to ask people not to read SpoFi at all, especially when it's so easy to put scores in the Comments thread. Walrus' solution is the most elegant.

remlap: go terps? This could get ugly. ;) As far as the real thread... aside from our religious issues, I agree with remlap that if you don't want spoilers, don't go to sports sites. I avoid ESPN like the plague if I've got a game taped. I wouldn't expect them not to show scores- they are a sports site. Same here.
