2007 NCAA Hockey Tournament The brackets have been selected, with the #1 seeds going to Minnesota, Notre Dame, Clarkson, and UNH. Notre Dame has been ranked #1 for most of the season, riding a hot goaltender. They have won five straight and only given up 3 goals total in those games. Minnesota beat North Dakota (the hotest team in the nation) in a thrilling OT game for the WCHA conference championship, after an amazing goal by Blake Wheeler (YouTube). First round of the playoffs start this weekend, with the Frozen Four in St. Louis in two weeks.

Legendary Twins PA announcer Bob Casey died this weekend. "Bob Casey the stadium voice of the Twins for all of the team's 44 years and whose signature style and verbal stumbles endeared him to baseball fans throughout the Upper Midwest, died early Sunday from complications of liver cancer. He was 79." Bob Casey was famous for two things, his no smoking rule - "Noooooooooooooooo smoking in the Metrodome! If you must smoke, go outside or QUIT!" (or "go to Wisconsin" or "go to a casino" or "go to Disneyland" or one of his other great variations), and also the way he announced Kirby Pucket back in the day - "Now batting for the Twins, number 34, the center fielder, KIRBYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY PUCKETT!". It's a sad day in Twins land.

Moss to be traded to Oakland "The Vikings and Oakland Raiders have agreed to a trade that will send Vikings receiver Randy Moss to the Raiders in exchange for the seventh overall pick in this year's draft, linebacker Napoleon Harris and a low-round draft pick this year, a person with knowledge of the situation said Wednesday."

Herb Brooks killed in car crash Former Olympic hockey coach Herb Brooks, who led the United States to the ``Miracle on Ice'' victory over the Soviet Union, died Monday in a car accident, a state official said. This is a sad day for all hockey fans, especially here in Minnesota where Herb Brooks was our hockey god.

Gophers Repeat The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers became the first team in 31 years to win back to back titles in college hockey. Led by Austrian Thomas Vanek, most likely a top 5 pick in this years NHL draft, scored the game winner on a beautiful solo effort. University of New Hampshire played close in the first two periods, keeping the game tied going into the third. But the Gophers scored 4 third period goals to win the Championship. But of course, stupid college fans had to ruin a good thing, by setting a car on fire and tearing down traffic signs. It's hard to get into college hockey when NHL playoffs are just starting, but ESPN did have the game on and will most likely make the game an instant classic. Go Gophers!

Embrace All-Star weekend for what it's supposed to be -- fun If you read every media account of the happenings in and around All-Star weekend here, you would swear the event was some twisted hybrid of being repeatedly poked in the eye with a sharp object and being trapped in a tiny, airless room listening to an endless tape loop of Joe Sakic interviews.

I loved the Young Stars game, especially since there were quite a few Minnesota kids. Erik Johnson, Mike Lundin, Matt Niskanen and Peter Mueller.
The breakaway challenge was cool, and hopefully next year more guys will show off a little more. It seemed only Ovechkin was willing to look like a fool.
I also thought that The Hives were awesome, loved that they kept playing during the player interviews. That was impressive. I read the other day that they grew up in the same small town that Ulf Samuelsson came from. Sweet.
Minnesota Wild sold to former Nashville Predators owner Craig Leipold. Will Leipold, whose reputation ranges from "highly respected owner" to "driving force of failure," be good or bad for the Wild?
posted to Hockey at 12:31 AM CDT
I don't think it will really matter all that much. There has been some talk in the local media about the Wild wanting to redo some of their debt with the city of St. Paul, and that a new ownership will help that along. As long as Leipold isn't Norm Green 2, we'll be okay.
Nate DiMeo's Plan to Save the NHL The NHL should be more like pro soccer. No, I'm not crazy.
A nice fit with chico's column, too.

I love the idea, but my main concern is what would happen to hockey in non hockey markets like Carolina or Phoenix if their teams were relegated. It would kill hockey in those areas, wouldn't it?
Last years bottom three from each Conference:
Eastern: Philly, Washington, Boston
Western: Phoenix, Edmonton, Chicago
Wow.

This is great news for the Gophers. For football, we needed a high energy guy that could help us recruit, both in-state and out. For basketball, we needed a name, someone that demands respect and hard work and won't settle for not making the NCAAs. Go Gophers!

I picked the same final. This might just be BC's year, though I hope either the Gophers or Sioux win it to keep it in the WCHA.
I love this time of the year.

I've only looked at the West Regional in Denver, but there is some sick talent between Minnesota, Michigan, and North Dakota. And there a bunch of high draft picks out east as well. This should be a great tournament.

Jackpot Despite long odds, the Penguins will be in Pittsburgh for the next 30 years housed in a new arena they will pay next to nothing for. "Make no mistake about it -- without expanded gaming in Pennsylvania, the Penguins would be gone. The first puck would have been dropped next year in Kansas City."

Thank god. Hockey belongs in Pittsburgh.
I drove by the new Sprint Center in KC this weekend and it looks really cool, like a giant hockey puck, but hockey in KC just makes no sense.
The Royals Worst - And Best - Trade Ed Hearn is known for one of the worst trades in Kansas City Royals history. After three kidney transplants, skin cancer, and suicidal thoughts, he's now known by many for something far better.

Thanks for the link, I'll have to send this to my buddy in KC that has a "CONEFAN" license plate!
The "old NHL" lives on. Two of the most skilled teams in the league went at it Broad-Street-Bullies-style last night. After a questionable late hit to Chris Drury, all hell broke loose. Senators goalie Ray Emery, back from a 3-game suspension, celebrated by fighting Sabres keeper Martin Biron and enforcer Andrew Peters. Does the NHL need more or less of this?

The Rocket is back Roger Clemens will face the Twins in his quest for another Cy Young award
posted to Baseball at 7:31 AM CDT
Forget the Rocket. Tonight's game will be great to watch because of the young guy starting for the Twins - Francisco Liriano. He's 6-1, 2.16 ERA, and 67 strikeouts in only 58.1 IP. Many opposing batters have called him straight nasty, usually while they are walking back to the dugout hanging their heads.
How did the Twins get another pitcher like Johan Santana. Oh yeah, we traded A.J. Pierzynski to the SF Giants for Liriano, All Star closer Joe Nathan, and another pitcher Boof Bonser.

Yep, "forget the rocket" wasn't what I really meant. Roger Clemens definitely deserves the attention for his comeback tonight. I just wanted to remind people that tonight's game isn't all about Roger. The guy on the other team might be worth watching.
That said, Liriano will probably have a horrible outing tonight, while the Rocket throws a no-hitter!
As a Gopher fan, I'm just glad they were able to turn the season around and play some incredible hockey these past few weeks. And I couldn't be happier with the region they got placed in. I think BC is beatable, and I haven't been all that impressed with the 3 games I've seen them play on TV.
Here are my picks for the tourney:
East — Michigan over Niagara, SCSU over Clarkson. Michigan over SCSU
West — UNH over Notre Dame, CC over Mich. St.. CC over UNH
Midwest — UND over Princeton, Denver over WI. Denver over UND
Northeast — Miami over Air Force, MN over BC. MN over Miami
DU over MN (again) and Michigan over CC.
Michigan is the champion.
Go Gophers!
Howard T: emoeby, I can't disagree violently with your picks, but I think that Hockey East will come out better than you opine.
This is what is so difficult with college hockey. Since the conferences so rarely play each other, and top to bottom talent is so varied, it's hard to tell which teams are as good as their records. This is what makes the NCAA tourney so darn fun to watch.
I won't be surprised if BC beats MN, but I had to vote with my heart. As for UNH (University of No Hardware), they will have to show me they can win before I will predict them to. :)
I love this time of year.
Funny, I keep thinking the same thing, as a Gopher fan. BC is beatable and Miami hasn't proven to me they are a top team.
Again, I think this just goes to show it's all about lucky bounces and good goaltending. I don't see one team that is light years ahead of the pack. Almost every team is good and could win, but they are all beatable as well.
