Barry Bonds signs with Yankees!
The New York Yankees have pulled out all the stops to win this season and have signed Barry Bonds to act as their DH. This comes on the heels of Jason Giambi being diagnosed with another stomach tumour (his first one was in 2004). Bonds is expected to practice with their Florida State League team for a couple of weeks before being called up to the majors. The terms of his contract are currently unavailable.

Numbers prove Nelson is still King of the Wild Maybe this is the one way to figure out who is best no matter when they played.

I would suspect that the international fields today are much stronger and more competitive than back in the '40s and '50s.

Ultimate Fighting Robs The Cradle Want to watch 6-year-olds in the Octagon? Welcome to Missouri, apparently the only state in the union that allows "youth fighting." Says one parent, "We're not training them for dog fighting...I'd rather have my kids here than out on the streets."

Have suburban parents reached the point where they will risk anything so that their kid can be called an athlete?

As someone who has been working in kids soccer as a coach, referee and administrator for the past 9 years I will say this. Many kids are in competitive team sports for the wrong reasons. When they are put in individual sports and/or contact sports my experience is that over half kids shouldn't be doing it.

What parents do their very young kids is not helpful to their families or their childs developments.

The NFL in the year 2000 "Don't be shocked when the 21st century arrives and the NFL teams in Super Bowl XXXIV have women quarterbacks launching 135-yard touchdown passes with their power-assisted arms." Unintentional comedy gold from Sports Illustrated.

How to Tell When a College Basketball Game is Out of Reach Take the number of points one team is ahead. Subtract three. Add a half-point if the team that is ahead has the ball, and subtract a half-point if the other team has the ball. (Numbers less than zero become zero.) Square that. If the result is greater than the number of seconds left in the game, the lead is safe.

Or you could just use the handy Bill James Lead Calculator.

14 points down with three minutes to play is only 73% safe? Should be more like 95% IMHO. I like James baseball work though.

The Red Sox and Oakland open the season in Japan with Dice-K returning home to start. Usually these trips result in a lot of grousing by the players (most famously, Mike Mussina), but there's not a lot of sympathy when you're getting $40,000 for your troubles. Except if you're not: the MLB has announced that while players and managers will receive the stipend, coaches will not. Red Sox players are threatening to walk off the field today if the MLB does not reverse its reversal of its original stance.

Union to examine why Bonds has no offers The lack of offers to Barry Bonds will be examined by the baseball players' association as part of its annual review of the free-agent market. Less than two weeks before opening day, the 43-year-old home run king remains unsigned.

Bonds has the best eye in baseball. A team would be crazy not to take him. Plus he puts the meat in the seats...home and on the road.

NCAA tourney is the best, but it could be even better. The NCAA tournament is the best three-plus weeks of hoops, maybe of anything, on the planet. But that doesn't mean it's perfect. It isn't.

John Daly disqualified at Bay Hill One day after swing coach Butch Harmon fires him, Daly misses his tee time and is disqualified from Arnold Palmers Invitational. Said Harmon, "My whole goal for him was he's got to show me golf is the most important thing in his life," Harmon said. "And the most important thing in his life is getting drunk."
