Collins returns to Chicago: TNT analyst Doug Collins returns to the Bulls after being replaced by Phil Jackson in 1989. In February, Collins commented he wouldn't consider coaching for another five or six years. How things change.

Ring it up! Celtics crush Lakers for 17th title There were legendary Celtics sitting in the stands, with names like Russell, Havlicek, Heinsohn, Maxwell, Ainge, and White, who could all tell stories about the days when they touched the NBA championship trophy, sprayed champagne on each other, and watched Red Auerbach proudly puff on a victory cigar. After a 22-year wait that included the retirement of Larry Bird, lots of lean years, and the death of Auerbach, the Celtics have new legends named Pierce, Allen, and Garnett, who now can tell their stories about touching the trophy, spraying champagne, and wishing Red were here to witness it.

An Instant Classic "A rivalry between the league's two most storied franchises -- with some of the game's biggest names and biggest moments -- now has its biggest rally. No team had ever overcome more than a 15-point deficit after the first quarter, and Elias Sports Bureau said it was the biggest comeback in the finals since 1971. One thing's for sure, it will forever be remembered in the annals of Celtics-Lakers lore."

I fell asleep when the Celtics were down 81-80. I couldn't keep my eyes open even though I knew it would be a great finish. Damn you 9pm tipoff!
Junior Mint: The enduring popularity (and ubiquity) of the 1989 upper deck Ken Griffey Jr. Card When Griffey hits home run No. 600, don't look for the value of Upper Deck No. 1 to skyrocket. After all, there's likely a card in circulation for every person living in the city centers of Cincinnati and Seattle. That sheer quantity, though, does mean that the lasting image of Ken Griffey Jr. won't be anything he does on the baseball field. It will be a picture of an overjoyed teenager in an airbrushed Mariners hat.

There was a time when my young mind thought I had a fortune in waiting with Frank Thomas' Leaf rookie and this Junior rookie. The fact is that if I sold both of these today I may get a tank of gas or two. Now if I had one of those blue Griffey's, that might be worth something.
Kimbo Slice is Going Primetime A sport that was once derided as "human cockfighting" and banned in most U.S. states is airing live on CBS Saturday night. Mixed Martial Arts fighter Kimbo Slice will face James "The Colossus" Thompson in the first live bout on one of the big four networks, a sign the brutal sport has gone mainstream. "Anyone who thinks CBS will not come out of this with some kind of black eye is fooling themselves," says sports consultant Marc Ganis.

It was way too long THX, especially considering the first two fights lasted a total of two minutes. The Lawler/Smith fight was the best fight of the evening with Carano/Young in a close second. Its a shame Lawler/Smith was cut short over what sounds like a miscommunication between fighter and doctor. I think they did a good job stopping Carano/Young when they did as it appeared Young had a broken eye socket. Ouch!
Slice/Thompson was a joke. MMA as a whole was probably knocked down a few notches due to the sloppy performances of the out of shape fighters AND the questionable officiating of the "main event." Also, whats up with the ear? Anyone in that locker room have a needle for pete's sake? Strictly from an entertainment perspective, however, I enjoyed the hell out of that match.
Fines will be imposed for clear cases of flopping: The league office has yet to determine exact fine amounts for offending flops and how fines might escalate for repeat offenders, but in-game arena observers and video reviewers will be instructed to report instances of theatrical flopping for potential punishment as part of postgame reports on officiating and other matters.

What is a clear case of flopping? This has disaster written all over it, in my opinion. I hate flopping with a passion, but I would rather see the refs just stop calling charges on players who run into floppers. Fining players doesn't seem to fit here.
ESPN Fires Pittsburgh Radio Host Mark Madden Last Wednesday, ESPN 1250 host Mark Madden responded to news of Sen. Ted Kennedy's illness with this comment: "I'm very disappointed to hear that Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts is near death because of a brain tumor. I always hoped Senator Kennedy would live long enough to be assassinated." This Wednesday, he's looking for a new job. AOL Fanhouse blogger Ryan Wilson's response: "It couldn't have happened to a nicer jerk."

Yeah, thankfully I've never heard of this guy before now. Rcade, his comment about the Kopechnes suggests he knows something of recent U.S. history, or at least Kennedy history. He had to know it was a distasteful comment, he just didn't think he'd get canned for it.
If you can't beat 'em, cheat 'em. Seven time champion Robert Horry gives a do whatever it takes to win lesson to the Hornets, and extends his post-season record of cheap shots in the process.

That was a clean screen, not a cheap shot and certainly not cheating. The columnist seems to have an axe to grind with the Spurs.

That was hilarious! Maybe Bill isn't so bad after all. On second thought, he still sucks.

Harrison asked about shooting Indianapolis Colts star receiver Marvin Harrison was interviewed by police about a shooting near his North Philadelphia car wash this week.

Harrison has always been a little too quiet and reserved, in my opinion. I've heard rumors in the past about incidents that have been hushed up, but nothing involving guns. I'll wait and see how the investigation turns out before I care too much. Marvin is probably on the back burner now anyway.

Right, nothing says gangsta like being a little too quiet and reserved.
I didn't say he was a gangster. Harrison just seems like an odd guy. He's worth millions yet owns a bar and a car wash in North Philadelphia, which happens to be a very scary place. Maybe he is giving back to the community? He owns a custom made pistol with armor piercing bullets. I'm not a gun guy, but that seems excessive.
Living and working in Indy, I've heard other stuff about the guy that seems strange. None of this means he has anything to do with the shooting or that he's a bad guy. It just doesn't pass the sniff test for me, but I'm curious to see how the investigation turns out.

sportsblitz and BornIcon - I didn't intend for my "scary" comment to mean that North Philly is scary to me personally. Philadelphia, and particularly North Philadelphia, is a high crime rate area. Historically, North Philadelphia is a blighted area with drugs, violent crimes, slums, etc worse than the national average.
I'm sure Harrison's businesses are an effort in revitalization and job growth. I'm also well aware that people have the right to live and work where they please, nowhere did I say otherwise. I just find the whole scenario bizarre.

I would add TO to the list of degenerates the Boys have brought to the team. He was never in trouble with the law that I know of, but he definately had the reputation as a head case and locker room cancer.

Somebody tell this to the Yankees.
I'm happy that Garnett, Allen, and Pierce finally got rings, as all three seem to be good guys. For the Lakers, it will be interesting to see if Bynum's return to the lineup has the effect that some are predicting. But the one thing I think everyone learned from this finals is that Kobe is NOT Jordan. Many of the talking heads on TV and radio were too quick to crown him as the next MJ. Hopefully we don't have to listen to the comparisons anymore.
