Ring it up! Celtics crush Lakers for 17th title There were legendary Celtics sitting in the stands, with names like Russell, Havlicek, Heinsohn, Maxwell, Ainge, and White, who could all tell stories about the days when they touched the NBA championship trophy, sprayed champagne on each other, and watched Red Auerbach proudly puff on a victory cigar. After a 22-year wait that included the retirement of Larry Bird, lots of lean years, and the death of Auerbach, the Celtics have new legends named Pierce, Allen, and Garnett, who now can tell their stories about touching the trophy, spraying champagne, and wishing Red were here to witness it.

NFL Owners Vote Unanimously to End Collective Bargaining Agreement ESPN's John Clayton reports, "The NFL officially notified its players union on Tuesday that it will opt out of the current collective bargaining agreement, which could lead to a season without a salary cap in 2010 and a possible lockout in 2011." CBS Sports NFL reporter Clark Judge says the move was motivated by owners wanting to lower the amount of revenue devoted to players, pay less to rookies, and recoup bonuses paid to contract-breaking players.

It's OK for the NFL to get you drunk, but not Charles Woodson Just when you thought you could feel no worst about professional sports...

posted to Football at 8:04 AM CDT

The hypocrisy of the NFL is totally absurd. On one hand, they have beer commercials advestising the NFL after nearly, every commercial break but Charles Woodson isn't allowed to promote his own line of wine because it might reflect poorly upon his persona with the kids? Give me a break!!! The NFL doesn't have the right to tell an athlete what they can and can't promote considering that it isn't anything illegal. There is nothing wrong with Woodson promoting this product except that the NFL hasn't invested anything towards it therefore, since they're not getting any revenue, why should an NFL player? Absolutely laughable.

The NFL has the right to impose all kinds of rules on its players, per the contracts they sign to play in the league.

I can understand imposing rules & regulations for any illegal, criminal activities and/or drug & alcohol abuse but to try and stop this man from promoting his line of wines is hypocrisy at it's finest. The NFL can promote alcoholic beverages all day long but the moment a player decides to promote an alcoholic beverage, then it's wrong?

For God's sake...think about the children

Are they afraid that Charles Woodson's wine might cut into beer sales?

I can see it now....

Terrell Owens is a sweet, sweet man. If you get mowed down by a Honda Civic, you'd be extremely lucky to have Terrell Owens nearby.

well, at least he's proven he has a fraction of a soul.

though as an eagles fan, i'm obliged to remain unwavering in my disgust and hatred for t.o

Dude, get over it. This situation has nothing to do with football and everything to do with him being human and seeing someone who's life was in jeopardy. There is life outside of football and we should all remember that just because these great athletes perform super human feats between the lines, they are still human.

He, along with everyone else, is supposed to help in the face of adversity.

No, common decency makes someone "help in the face of adversity" or if that's your job. Not many people would take the time to help someone that's injured. How many times have we drove past someone on the side of the highway because their car broke down or they had a flat? Now, how many of us actually pull over to the side of the road to assist these individuals in distress?

This was a good thing for TO to do and just like anyone that takes the time to help another person in need of help....he deserves the football to be thrown to him a little more this season.

Comment icon posted at 12:26 PM CDT on July 22

Sorry, but I do pull over to help out every chance I get.

And that's great that you do that. I'm not saying that people who go out of their way to help other people are idiots, I commend people who do such things.

Jason Taylor Traded to Redskins After losing two defensive ends to season-ending injuries on the first day of camp, the Washington Redskins traded a second-round and sixth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for defensive end Jason Taylor.

posted to Football at 7:50 AM CDT

For the Redskins sake, they better hope that Jason Taylor doesn't get hurt as well or they could just call this upcoming season a wrap.

Comment icon posted at 12:15 PM CDT on July 21

Depends. Most of those "big-name veterans who prove to be creakier than advertised" were past their prime and Taylor is in the mist of his. I can see this working out for Taylor and the Redskins but didn't he say that this is going to be his final year anyways? I have to wonder if he'll play with the same tenacity considering that he wants to live the Hollywood lifestyle after football.

Michelle Wie Disqualified for Scorecard Gaffe In second place at 17 under after three rounds of the State Farm Classic Saturday, Wie was disqualified from the tournament for failing to sign her second-round scorecard until after leaving the scorer's tent. "She was like a little kid after you tell them there's no Santa Claus," said LPGA official Sue Witters.

posted to Golf at 5:17 PM CDT

It's a load of crap! If Michelle Wei wasn't playing well, then of course she shouldn't continue playing but because she forgot/failed to sign her score card, she's disqualified? Signing her card has nothing to do with her actual play, it is looked as more of a gesture than anything. If it's in the rules, so be it but com'on now, this is something that the PGA and the LPGA need to take a serious look at. It's not like she cheated, it was said that Wei was honest about the situation and made no attempt to make it seem as if she needed to lie. Let Michelle play.

Not tonight, honey, I have a game tomorrow. The notion of pre-game abstinence from sex to enhance athletic performance is a longstanding one. But is that notion as fictional as Rocky Balboa? Sean Cupp thinks so. Chris Byrd is the guinea pig. Tom Fornelli resents his high school coach.

Crash Davis: After 12 years in the minor leagues, I don't try out. Besides, uh, I don't believe in quantum physics when it comes to matters of the heart.
Annie Savoy: What do you believe in, then?
Crash Davis: Well, I believe in the soul, the cock, the pussy, the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.

Crash Davis: Goodnight.
Annie Savoy: Oh my. Crash...
Ebby Calvin LaLoosh: Hey, Annie, what's all this molecule stuff?

Ditto that rcade.

Serena won't play Indian Wells; WTA's new rule won't change it Serena and Venus Williams' ongoing boycott of the Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells, Calif., could jeopardize their participation at other tournaments under recently adopted rules for mandatory events set to kick in next year. (edit) The Williams sisters have steadfastly declined to participate at the Pacific Life Open since 2001. That year, Venus defaulted to Serena minutes before their semifinal started. Spectators subsequently jeered Serena in the final. The sisters and their father, Richard, have said they believe the crowd's actions were racially motivated.

posted to Tennis at 10:36 AM CDT

I agree that Venus & Serena are showing that this is not about money which to me is a breath of fresh air. To hear that two stellar athletes are taking a stand about something that they truly believe in is something that hasn't been felt in the sports world for many years and should be discussed on a serious and intellectual level.

Comment icon posted at 10:53 AM CDT on July 17

I think Richard Williams falls out of bed every morning calling people racist.

People of different enthicities that grew up in the early 50's, 60's and even 70's have a pretty hard time letting go of racially motivated comment's or actions. I was born in 1977 and even I had dealt with some type of racism when my mother bought a house in the suburbs in the early 90's.

All I'm saying is that people that dealt with racism in a way that many of us will never have to deal with (not being able to sit in the front of a bus or being able to sit in a restaurant because the color of your skin) and we shouldn't just dismiss someone who did in fact deal with things of that nature just because you don't agree with his comments no matter how vile they may come across.

It was very ugly for Uggla NEW YORK -- They cheered the legends. They cheered the hometown heroes. They cheered the old owner. They booed the commissioner, booed Terry Francona and Billy Wagner, even booed Sarah Jessica Parker. But towards the merciful end of The All-Star Game That Would Never End, the Yankee Stadium Bleacher Creatures had energy only for one chant: "Hit it to Uggla."

I agree, I don't like the "winner gets home field in the WS" rule. It takes all the fun out of the actual game.

Fun? Now what does fun have to do with an MLB All-Star game?

Actually, he claims he was moving the television set because it was broken and came across the receipt under the set.

Hey, that's where I keep all receipts too.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
