Luongo traded for Bertuzzi The NHL season might be over, but that doesn't mean that the action has stopped. In advance of the NHL Draft, "the Panthers have confirmed that they acquired Todd Bertuzzi, Bryan Allen and Alexander Auld from the Canucks in exchange for Roberto Luongo and Lukas Krajicek and a 2006 sixth round pick." Hindsight will determine who the trade "winner" was, but for this season, Vancouver has vastly improved. (But what happens to Cloutier now?)

Crosby becomes the youngest player to record 100 points and becomes just the seventh rookie to reach that mark, behind Ovechkin just last week. Yet, Ovechkin remains the runaway Calder favourite -- should Crosby be re-evaluated? Should the age difference be a factor? Or is Phaneuf overlooked because of his position? Whatever the debate, there's no arguing that this was the NHL's best ever rookie crop.

Valentich said women have flashed their breasts at folk festivals and other musical events in the past, but it is not an activity usually associated with hockey. "We need to hear from women what was happening to them in that particular setting," she said.

The device also helps illustrate 'coachable moments.'"

NHL Rule 88c "A misconduct or game misconduct penalty, at the discretion of the Referee, shall be imposed on a player who throws his stick or any part thereof outside the playing area." At the discretion of that referee, no penalty was assessed in the game against Sundin. Hey, no harm no foul, right? No one was injured and the fan that caught it, for compensation, received a signed Sundin synergy (expensive!) stick. Supposedly, he sold it for $600. Regardless of the referee's decision, Colin Campbell doesn't tolerate it: 1 game suspension for Sundin.

An annual post-Christmas tradition. The 2004 World Juniors tournament started today with last years winners, Russia, tieing Slovakia 2-2; and last years silver medalists, Canada, beating the home Finns 3-0. The games are always exciting, and while there is some NHL talent (last year's #1 pick), the real appeal of the juniors comes in seeing the future stars of the NHL -- including, this year's expected number one draft pick Alexander Ovechkin; the anticipated number 2 and 3 picks; and the 16-year old, expected phenom, Sydney Crosby. The tournament is the future of the NHL now. (The Czechs and Americans also won their games 8-0, but their rivals, the Ukraine and Austria, aren't expected to compete.)

The under-reported scandal? We all remember Ben Johnson's victory and subsequent drug scandal -- a moment that brought shame to all of Canada. Now, we get reports showing that Carl Lewis, the man to claim Johnson's gold medal, was part of a long "pattern" of US drug-related cover-ups. Where's the shame now? Or is it too long ago and too easily forgotten? What should be done? How deep does the US Olympic Committee corruption go? A lot of questions, yes, but they're questions that are not being asked by the major media outlets.

The NHL Playoff match-ups are finally set and numerous predictions are already being made. While it's great to look forward to Wednesday, how about a look back on the year:
Turco setting a new GAA record and the Avs winning a ninth straight divisional title on the very last day of the season [link], the rich Rangers missing the playoffs yet again, Ottawa's President's Trophy, the complete collapse of the 'Canes and San Jose, the surprising play of TB and Minnesota, and the financial situations in Buffalo and Ottawa (and Pittsburgh, to a lesser extend). What are the stories of the year? And who are the individual stand-outs, and the most deserving of the many, many NHL awards?
