Judge Sides with Redskins The Washington Redskins have won the latest round in a 16-year court battle against a group of American Indians, prevailing on a technicality that again skirts the issue of whether the team’s nickname is racially offensive. In a ruling dated June 25 and first circulated Thursday, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ruled that the youngest of the seven Native American plaintiffs waited too long after turning 18 to file the lawsuit that attempts to revoke the Redskins trademarks.

A topic much-discussed here, American jurisprudence once again finds a way to duck the real issue in favor of the always-popular technicality. Fortunately, another lawsuit waits in the wings which doesn't suffer from the legal defect raised here. But in the wonderland of our legal system who can tell what white rabbits await?

Mark Hughes is new Manchester City manager. The former Manchester United star and Blackburn Rovers manager takes over from Sven-Goran Eriksson. The article also mentions that Hughes was non-committal on the impending purchases of Brazilians Ronaldinho and Jo. The next Manchester derby should be a rousing affair, with Hughes going up against old boss Alex Ferguson. Meanwhile, with Hughes' move, Chelsea loses yet another candidate to replace the departed Avram Grant. And Blackburn appear to be in no hurry to fill Hughes' spot, with candidates such as Sam Allardyce (late of Newcastle and Bolton) lined up.

Agreed. Premier League clubs seemed to have more sense than other top leagues in coaching tenures--I think the shelf life in Brazil is about four months--but that is beginning to change; evidence is at Newcastle, Fullham, Tottenham and the FPP-mentioned Chelsea and Man City.

I wonder how safe even Arsene Wenger is if the Gunners don't do better next season than 3rd in the league, not even getting to a domestic Cup finals or past the Champions League quarters, especially if the ownership (finally) changes at the Emirates.

Rafa Benitez should be safe for another 12 months if the Reds' ownership situation stabilizes. David Moyes is surely safe after retaining the UEFA Cup spot, unless he gets recruited for a bigger job. Roy Keane, Harry Redknapp, Mark Hughes and Martin O'Neill are fine. I wonder about pretty much everyone else with the possible exception of Roy Hodgeson.

If Keane can keep Sunderland up again he will surely be the frontrunner to replace SAF in two years. He might have an extremely cool coaching setup if does, with Ole already working with the Red Devil reserves and Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes apparently joining him when they hang up their boots.

First substitution from either team was in the 87th minute. I was really surprised that Scholes didn't come off at the hour mark and that SAF didn't replace either Carrick or Hargreaves with enough time left to maybe win in regulation.

Harsh playing throughout and Michel surely cemented his place in the Stamford Bridge Hall of Voodoo Dolls after the early yellow to Makelele and bad decisions on who put the ball over the end line time and again in the second half. Drogba's red, though, that one they cannot count against the ref.

I haven't read any serious complaints about the Glasers in some time now, nor any at all really about Randy Lerner since he took over Aston Villa. There are some bad owners in any top-flight sport league and it has nothing to do with being American or whatever, that some bad owners are American is simply coincidence.

Of course as a Reds fan I'd really like this sorted, and soon.

Comment icon posted at 3:05 PM CDT on March 31

georgieB, you and I simply disagree. I see little in the way of facts behind your opinion of the Glazers, except of course they did take the loans, though I'm not interested in changing what you think or disputing your entitlement to feel how you do. However, the Red Devils did win the EPL last year and are likely to do so again this, with the Champions League a possibility as well so the financial maneuvering doesn't seem to have had on-field impact.

Note that I'm not saying SAF isn't the most important factor in said success, nor am I saying he is. I would also point out that he's been given a transfer budget the last few years that only Abramovitch surpassed. Speaking of Chelsea's Russian owner, he doesn't attend all his team's home games--should he be forced to sell?

As for how I came to be a Reds fan, what difference does it make? You're probably assuming it happened when they had all the success in the '70s and '80s and, yes, it was at that time, but not because of it. A college friend from England was a Liverpool fanatic and it was his influence which was the cause.

Comment icon posted at 6:16 PM CDT on April 1

I would think that United won the Premiership last year and challenging for more honours this year in spite of the Glazers

Think all you like, I'm not disputing your opinion and you may well be correct, but if you want to convince me (or others, I suspect) you need to back that up with real data. The Glazers have splashed out large quantities of cash for Tevez, Anderson, Nani and Hargreaves (not sure when Vidic came in), all without forcing SAF to sell any of the big contributors, which to me says they are not (only) running the club for financial gains.

What do you see that's different?

Comment icon posted at 3:00 PM CDT on April 3

Your facts do nothing to support your argument (IMO). For instance, the Glazers may not have (yet) paid a transfer fee for Tevez but they were behind a major court/PR case to get him onboard and are certainly paying him a decent wage and while SAF may have wanted Hargreaves, the previous owners couldn't get the deal done and the current ones did.

What would show me the strength of your assertion is negative things that can be clearly laid at the owners' feet. Raising ticket prices might be the one thing that comes close, except that plenty of teams raise ticket prices, and Old Trafford is full every time I see ManU on TV. The club started selling players who were still making significant contributions without having a clear replacement on hand, dragging them all over the globe in the summer for exhibitions, requiring fans to buy Personal Seat Licenses*, all those would be signs of the apocalypse you seem to feel has already happened.

Every team owner would like to make a profit, and for that matter a bigger one than last year. Since ManU are about the biggest club in the world I'm not surprised it can deliver on that desire.

Top 10: Sports Superstitions. Sports are a competitive business, and athletes face a tremendous amount of pressure to always be at their best. Sometimes it’s not enough to just practice and train for hours on end, as players also need to have a mental edge, which often manifests in some strange and nonsensical behaviors and beliefs. Maybe performing the following rituals don’t make an athlete play better, but not adhering to them will certainly make them worse, if only in their own mind.

Liverpool bundled out of FA Cup by Barnsley. Championship League side Barnsley came to Anfield and did the unthinkable, scoring a last-gasp winner 30 seconds from the end to knock out Liverpool, a team currently 29 places above them. Will Rafa Benitez walk alone after this?

posted to Soccer at 11:05 AM CDT

I think Tuesday against Inter is the real test for Benitez. The Italians are on a very strong run, moved 11 clear of Roma at the top of Serie A today, but (like today) this is a home match and the Reds must either win 1-0 or by at least two goals; if not either H&G sell to Dubai or Benitez is done. If the latter, we may not see it until May 15 but this week will have been the deciding factor.

Etagloh, I don't think it's a question of one game but the very disappointing past 12 months. After starting strong with Champions League and FA Cup trophies in years one and two, other managers have begun to catch on and unravel Rafa's rotation policies. As he had a huge transfer budget last summer and got in a large number of quality signings, there is no question that injuries aside the Reds are the team he put together and must live with the results.

Comment icon posted at 6:18 PM CDT on February 16

The Reds brought in central defensive cover last month, apparently a quality player called Skrtel. And Torres has scored the goals but after being hurt for Spain I don't see how he could be risked against Barnsley. The reason I think Benitez has about worn his welcome--again, the Champions League being the final test--is the constant rotation policy that prevents real gelling among the best players.

This is especially true of the midfield where selling Sissoko wasn't enough to break the logjamb now that Leiva is getting playing time. Consider how, other than Gerrard, the playing time at the remaining three MF spots is shared among: Babel, Kewell, Mascherano, Alonso, Leiva, Pennant, Benayoun and sometimes Riise or Aurellio.

I was a bit surprised that with the rumors about Crouch the whole month of January he didn't move on (not that I want him to leave), to allow Babel to switch into the forward rotation. My guess is that with Voronin and Alonso hurt Benitez didn't want to take the risk but he probably should have, relying on Sebastian Leto or Nabil El Zhar as emergency cover.

"Are supporters supposed to accept missing the biggest games of their season because it's being played on the other side of the planet?" With over two years of inactivity at the international level, Puerto Rico had sunk to a lowly ranking of 196 of 207 prior to this last two week’s return to action with successful warm-up friendlies against Bermuda and Trinidad & Tobago. The seeds of a renaissance were planted in 2004 with the birth of the Puerto Rico Islanders in the USL First Division . Now, as Puerto Rico heads toward World Cup qualifying, the island’s top club team and National Team are on the cusp of becoming regional powers.

BoriQa, you need to know your audience a lot better before quoting the rules to terrapin, who has a three digit member number (as do I, an active member for just about five years now):

- "terrapin has posted 36 links and 735 comments to SportsFilter and 21 threads and 229 comments to the Locker Room" in nearly six years.
- "billsaysthis has posted 110 links and 3313 comments to SportsFilter and 6 threads and 284 comments to the Locker Room."

Second, if you spent any time at all on SpoFi other than your own posts you'd know that the membership here is:

a) hardly exclusively American
b) a hotbed of soccer fans--we have our own Premier League, Champions League and MLS fantasy leagues and a few years ago had TWO EPL fantasy leagues plus a World Cup competition too.

Third, look back at the previous game report type postings you've made on Puerto Rican soccer and other non-mainstream sports. How much discussion have they fostered? 20 comments for four posts, which is being generous since a number of the comments had little to do with the post, is not really what I would consider a strong track record.

The Constitution's free speech clause applies only to the government. Amendment 1 says: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

So employers can do what they want in this regard and, as lbb pointed out, any decision is subject to the company's balancing of interests among its various stakeholders.

Having said that, Congress has passed employment law, which has stood up to court tests, which prevent discrimination based on personal and political beliefs. So ESPN could not fire, say, Stuart Scott if he came on the air one day and explained he'd recently converted to a very evangelical sect of Satanists.

Agreed. I think Wade Wilson is another good example, his lack of game management skills showing up in the Cowboys' loss to the Giants as proof. Jim Mora Jr. and Steve Marricuci are possibly in this group as well, though Mora's Atlanta situation was perhaps not a fair test.

Speaking of Wilson, I would have you note that Jerry Jones hired Jason Garret as OC last year ahead of Wilson's deal, same as Snyder did this week.

World Soccer: January Friendlies Update Puerto Rico is on a roll with victories 2-0 and 1-0 over Bermuda last week in preparation for the first phase of the 2010 World Cup qualifying that begins next month in the Caribbean. The last time Puerto Rico won as many as two games in a row came in 1993. Among some of the other friendly results: Barbados 3-2 Antigua & Barbuda, Guyana 1-2 Grenada, and USA 2-0 Sweden. Actually, the US win was encouraging. Sweden sent their B team, no Ibrahimovich for instance, but we only had two first choice among the starting XI (and that's being kind to Twellman). Eddie Robinson, who scored the first, was making his first NT appearance, and quite a few others who dressed have less than 10 caps.

Plus it was sweet to see Landon become the US all-time leading goal scorer from a PK since so many of his goals are from the spot.

Puerto Rico had already defeated Bermuda 2-0 on Wednesday January 16th. The Puerto Rico national team, which hasn't played since 2004, is undergoing a renaissance as they build towards a World Cup qualifier against Dominican Republic next March. According to FIFA rankings, the Puerto Rico team is ranked 196 (out of 207) in the world. According to the Northern Irish Head Coah of the national team Colin 'General' Clarke the Puerto Rico team is not that bad and says that their position at the bottom of the pile - compared to Bermuda's 146th - to be more to do with inactivity than lack of ability. The Puerto Rico team had not played since 2004. Clarke who also coaches the USL 1st division Puerto Rico Islanders said that the squad had been galvanized by a sense that a genuine national program was starting to come together for the first time in years.

Why would Carroll go back to the pros after his debacles in NY and NE and his pretty amazing run with the Trojans? Arthur Blank can say he's interested in Carroll, Parcells or Tiger Woods, don't mean any of them will be working in Atlanta.

Comment icon posted at 3:33 PM CDT on January 10

Tex, who says Carroll is the one with the interest? From the reports I read, it's Blank who has interest in Carroll rather than the other way around. For instance, say the Giants lose, especially badly, to Dallas and Coughlin finally gets the boot (something rumored after almost every season he's been in charge), well that would probably be more interesting to Pete but Atlanta? I don't see that.

Mickster, even if the Bush thing unrolls as you state, how does that change Pete Carroll's success? Sure, the win/loss record would change and the BCS Trophy would go elsewhere (though where is interesting) but Carroll is not the one guilty of any violations nor did Bush's actions matter on the field except, perhaps, in that he had better peace of mind and was a better player for it.

These are not point-shaving, recruiting or drug violations. If anything, I think should this calamity (as a USC alum) come to pass that Carroll will be more likely to stay just to win a BCS trophy that isn't tainted.

To be able to get his team UP for a game 16 times in a row is simply remarkable. Teams simply have games where they play flat, but Bill has not allowed that all year. And his halftime adjustments are second to none.

Very good point, bdaddy. Being more of an English football fan I found myself comparing this kind of management to, say, Ferguson, Wenger and Benitez--Wenger managed it in 2004 and his Arsenal ran the table undefeated but otherwise hard to find the equal.
