Mets' Wagner calls out teammates for ducking media Outspoken Mets closer Billy Wagner lashed out at truculent teammates Thursday for dodging reporters and ducking "being accountable" by failing to talk to the media. Wagner, who ripped his teammates earlier this season, caused the flap on Thursday when he questioned some players' failure to make themselves available to the media after the team's deflating 1-0 loss to Washington.

And then to try to make it a racist thing because it is some latin players...

Ummm, what?!!? Who made it a racist thing? Since the majority of the players on the Mets are of latin descent and a teammate criticizes the way the team is playing and that player isn't latin, that's not being racist. I'm Puerto Rican and I have absolutely no problem with what Billy Wagner had to say in the direction of Carlos Delgado. It was an honest response that should have been kept in-house but since there doesn't seem to be any realy leaders in that locker room, I'll have Wagner's back on this one.

I doubt that. I think that he's on TNT because not only is he an entertaining individual but he's also one of the most respected and outspoken person that's involved in some aspect of the NBA.

A dazzling Manny being Manny moment I saw this on ESPN this morning and burst out laughing as soon as I saw the high-five. There are few players who could get away with doing something like that.

posted to Baseball at 11:18 AM CDT

I saw this play and I too was in amazement. I have never seen anything like what Manny did but I must admit, it was awesome!!! People make such a big deal about professional athletes getting paid millions of dollars but Manny is a classic example of a professional athlete that's just having fun out there.

Comment icon posted at 11:28 AM CDT on May 15

Let's say he didn't get the ball back to the cut-off in time to double the runner off, then what. "Oh, sorry coach, I would've just thrown it back in but I had to high-five a cute guy in the stands."

Your completely missing the point since he did make the catch and also threw the ball to the cut off man who relayed the throw to 1st to catch the runner for the double play. It was a play that define Manny as being a free-spirited, spontaneous individual who loves the game and who also wants to entertain the fans and in that respect, Manny was very successful.

Sorry, but Ankiel had a genuine "great catch" for the Cardinals last night against the Pirates.

Umm, and did he also climb the wall and spur of the moment decide to high five a Cards fan? I'm by no means a Red Sox fan but by the name you're going by, I can tell that your opinion is baised. Let me address the first statement as eloquently as possible: Are you freakin' kidding me? The Celtics are gonna put the mighty Pistons out of their misery as soon as they get passed those pesky Cavs.

Now, as for the 2nd comment. Have you been watching the Celtics at all this year? I agree that they have a 3-4 year window to win a title but I do believe that thru all these trials & tribulations that the Celtics are going thru during road games, that that'll change eventually. I cannot predict when but I think that either in the East Conference Finals or even the NBA Finals itself, the Celtics will form like Voltron and become the powerhouse that they've been all year long to produce a 66-16 record. Also, people must remember that they did in fact have a winning record against the West this season as well. That must count for something....or at least I'm hoping it does.

And I have a feeling that you'll be eating those words while saying to yourself, "That damn BornIcon was right about the Celtics....THAT FUCKER!!!"

It seems like every team is having a difficult time playing on the road this year in the playoffs (minus the Pistons' 1 win versus the Orlando Magic) so it's not just the C's.

Except the Celtics look like shit compared to themselves during the regular season

They can look like shit but the question is: Are they still winning?

Tonight, we'll find out if the Celtics/Cavs series is over or if there will be a Game 7 at Boston. With the way things been looking so far in both the east & west, there will be a Game 7 and Boston will win. When they face the Pistons, not only will the Celtics have home court advantage but they'll also have home court advantage in the NBA Final.

Comment icon posted at 7:19 AM CDT on May 16

The Pistons can win on the road..

Why? Because they won once? I dont buy it, so excuse me but we're going to have to agree to disagree.

I'll give you that the Celtics haven't looked as dominant in the playoffs as they were in the regular season but I have to believe that they can still turn, whatever it is that's going on, around and no other team in the east can make me think otherwise considering that it isn't just the Celtics that haven't looked like themselves on the road. Look at every team in the playoffs and it's exactly the same thing, problems on the road but the Celtics are still ahead in wins against the Cavs and the Cavs are the ones that have their backs against the wall.

Why is it that just because the Celtics are having the same problem as everyone else in the playoffs on the road, they're the ones that everyone is worried about? I get that it may be a mental thing but considering that the Celtics have themselves some great players on their roster, someone like KG needs to step up to the plate and lead this team to VICTORY, as Johnny Drama would put it.

On the other hand, if a college student decides to transfer to a different school, he/she must sit out for at least 1 year. Just ridiculous...

Back on topic, LeBron's mom needs to sit down and watch the game just like everyone else.

How is it that you can just take one little piece of what I wrote to try and make a point? Which, by the way, you did not make.

What happened THX, was that LeBron was on a fast break and was about to take it to the hole. Paul Pierce held LeBron so that he would not get the 2 points while LeBron was making his move and they moved towards the front row where some fans were. Pierce held LeBron and apparently, LeBron's mom thought that there was a little extra curriculor activities happening while both, LeBron and Paul Pierce were going out of bounds, but that was not the case. She then proceeded to jaw at Pierce while Kevin Garnett was trying to calm her down and convince her that there was nothing inappropriate going on between LeBron & Pierce. The best part besides LeBron telling her to 'sit [her] ass down' was when he walked towards Pierce and they exchanged handshakes to show that there was no malice intended. Great show of sportsmanship.

I'm a huge Ichiro fan and consider him to be one of the greatest contact hitters in the sport and also happens to have a sniper rifle for an arm but Ankiel's throw's to 3rd base to end the innings were spectacular.....but that's just my opinion.

I have to agree with rcade. The trade for Kidd at mid-season was an attempt to take the Mavs over the hump since Kidd is a proven PG but they just never seemed to have the chemistry needed to win a championship. Maybe this trade can work out for the better if given time, but how much time does Kidd really have left? Chris Paul outplayed Kidd and made him look flat-out old so maybe with some pre-season games under their belts with Kidd at the helm can help the Mavs a little. I personally don't think it'll help but then again, I didn't think that the Atlanta Hawks could win a game against the Celtics in the 1st round of the playoffs and I was already proven wrong, so you never know.

Clemens reportedly had affair with country star Roger Clemens has another potential scandal he's already denying. He reportedly had a affair with country singer Mindy McCready in a decade-long relationship that began when she was 15 and Clemens was a 28-year old with the Red Sox. This could be especially damaging as Clemens' defamation suit against Brian McNamee proceeds.

posted to Baseball at 9:54 AM CDT

From what I've heard, this is all specualation. Clemens has confirmed that he knows Mindy McCready and that she is a family friend and has been for quite some time. All of this information has been given out by Brian McNamee's lawyer, Richard Emery in order to make Clemens out to be a scumbag and also to make their case against Clemens that no one should believe what he has to say. This is a classic case of mudslinging that we've see in politics but of course this is just a ploy to misdirect people's attention into believing McNamee and not Clemens. Good job though.

Comment icon posted at 10:13 AM CDT on April 28

Either way, it seems totally inappropriate (for Mcnamee's lawyer) to defend his client by claiming his opponent is a child molester.

Absolutely. For Richard Emery to come out and make these accusations is low, even for a lawyer. The on-going case is about whether Clemens did in fact take steroids or if McNamee is just a liar. This has nothing to do with Clemens' sex life but I guess that is the price you pay for trying to clear your name.

Why do people still insist on treating clemens as a victim? How do people still give clemens the benefit of the doubt at this point? .... Sure it's mudslinging, but Clemens would have done the same thing.

Who said anything about treating Roger Clemens as if he was the victim? From my statement, I wasn't defending Clemens by what I said but I do see that you agree that this is 'mudslinging', which doesn't mean that you think that Clemens is a victim either. IMO, Clemens brought this upon himself with this defamation lawsuit even though everyone pretty much acknowledged that an innocent person would be doing exactly what he's doing: Trying to clear his name even though everyone around him that's being questioned seems to be giving McNamee more & more credibility with each passing day.

Comment icon posted at 8:59 AM CDT on April 30

And I understand that by making a comment that I believe this to be 'mudslinging', how that could be interpreted as defending Clemens. I, in no way am defending Roger Clemens but truly want to look at both sides of the spectrum without being baised. This whole thing started with basically Clemens' denial about using performance enhancing drugs and is now in the process of suing Brian McNamee for defamation of character. Since Clemens decided to go this route, his whole life can be looked at under a microscope by McNamee's lawyers, in order to prove that Clemens is a shady and untrustworthy individual.

Comment icon posted at 10:16 AM CDT on April 30

Where exactly did I "quote him"? All I said from my first post was that Clemens acknowledged knowing her...and? How does that make it seem as if I believe everything & anything that the guy has to say? My point is that this type of tactic of "piggybacking" on someone else's "mudslinging" towards Clemens just seems low, even for a lawyer but hey, if it works for the betterment of his client, good for them.

The guy has hit over 500 homeruns and the last I looked, only a select few have hitten that many. Just because he chooses to speak his mind, that makes him 'one of the games biggest jack-offs'? The teams that Big Hurt has played for have nothing but the upmost respect for him, deservingly so and no one can take away the fact that the guy is a future Hall of Famer.

Danica Patrick Wins IndyCar Race in Japan Danica Patrick became the first female winner in IndyCar history Sunday, taking the Indy Japan 300 when leader Helio Castroneves was forced to pit for fuel in the final laps. The 26-year-old driver won in her 50th IndyCar start. "She's rocketed herself to the top end of the roll call for most successful female racing drivers ever," writes Gemma Briggs. "The last significant victory was probably Michele Mouton's World Rally Championship win ... way back in 1981."

posted to Auto Racing at 8:59 AM CDT

So what's your point? Fuel strategy is part of racing.

Actually, yeah. That's exactly what Danica did and from the looks of her victory, it worked.

Does ESPN have something against Patrick, or maybe her new team?

IMO, I don't think so given that as soon as she won, this was BREAKING NEWS on ESPN so I don't think that they have anything against her or her team at all. They even had a segment about all the women who have competed against men in sports and came out on top. (Sorry about that, just noticed how that sounded)

Comment icon posted at 7:25 AM CDT on April 21

Wonder how long until she gets a test drive in F1?

F1? Forget F1, NASCAR needs to start making a huge push to entice Danica to head over to where the big boys drive.

Fukudome doesn't find racist T-shirts in Wrigleyville funny A Fukudome T-shirt with a racist image is the hottest-selling item at a souvenir stand that sells unlicensed Cubs-related merchandise across Addison Street from the ballpark.......... The Cubs front office was flooded with angry emails from fans in response to a Sun-Times story about a controversial T-shirt being sold outside of Wrigley Field. The ballclub does the right thing (update inside) after the uproar, for those of you who feel we've licked the problem of Racism in America, Guess Again!

That the hometown fans are making a mockery of one of their own players with an insulting t-shirt? That to me is very surprising considering that Fukudome has been a stand up guy from day 1.

Just a question...
Did Harry Caray say "Holy Cow!" too

I was wondering the same thing. I thought that it was Harry Carey's rendition of 'Take me out to the ballgame' as to what made him endearing to the Cubs. I always thought that 'Holy Cow' was a Phil Rizzuto catchphrase.

Isiah Thomas has not only tarnished his name & reputation but he also buried one of the greatest franchises of all-time and he still has a job? Regardless of how meaningless his role will be within the organization, this guy needs to be shown the door. The Knicks have written more checks to people since Isiah's been a part of that team so why not just write another one to him just so that the Isiah-era can be behind them. Isiah must have some incriminating information on James Dolan given that he isn't totally fired and from his track record, I just don't understand why.

There will probably be people unhappy about this but the truth of the matter is, this happens. Not saying that this is right but baseball is truly a way out for a lot of people living in the Dominican Republic. In DR, people are very poor and if they're talented enough to play ball, there will be someone out there that will help them with their dream but at an expense. It looks good to have a player that is very young so that the team that picks him up can have him around for a few years. The problem with this is if the team decides to sign the player to a long term deal, he might be a past his prime mid-way thru the contract and the team is stuck with an aging player instead.

WHAT GIVES, GUYS? Nelson says there's no problem, Davis says very little For Warriors coach Don Nelson, the mind-boggling question everyone wants answered is really a no-brainer. Why didn't he play Baron Davis in the second half of Monday's playoff-elimination game in Phoenix?

posted to Basketball at 8:05 AM CDT

Not at all because you only provided information to make it seem as if it was in fact a wise move to make.

Baron Davis is the leader of the Golden State Warriors and their best player. He was 2-13 and they did in fact go on a 38-19 run but what you failed to mention was that when their lead against the Suns started to dwindle down, instead of putting Baron back in the game to spark his team with some life, Don Nelson left him out and the Warriors lost the game. Isn't it possible for a shooter that's 2-13 to come back and go 6-9? It's been done before and to not have your best player out there to shoot his way out of a 2-13 night, just pushed them out of the playoff race and may have also made Baron's decision on what to do when he becomes a free agent this off season.

Comment icon posted at 9:50 AM CDT on April 16

Correct on one of two. While he is their most talented player, it is widely acknowledged that Stephen Jackson is their leader and emotional catalyst.

Stephen Jackson & Baron Davis are both team captains for the Warriors although you are correct that Stephen Jackson is their 'emotional catalyst.'

...as Davis' agent points out in the article, no other team has the cap room to match what Davis is guaranteed in his player option for 08-09 with the Warriors. So he likely isn't going anywhere.

The same thing was said about Kevin Garnett and Shaq but look what happened there. Anything is possible especially during free agency.

I know Nelson makes some unconventional moves, but this isn't the first time Davis has had a crappy first half. It is the first time he's been benched for the entire second half this season, however.

Especially when you consider that Baron was one of the key reason's as to why the Warriors were still in playoff contention until this fiasco.

Comment icon posted at 12:18 PM CDT on April 16

[Stephen Jackson] kept them in the Phoenix game until the very end.

You mean the game they lost and so desperately needed to win in order to have a chance of making the playoffs? Way to go there, Jack.

Comment icon posted at 7:00 AM CDT on April 17

I know there's "Win now" vs. long-term planning, but come on.

Com'on with what? Their best player is sitting on the bench because the coach is trying to prove a point, how does that help the team even make the playoffs? Oops, apparently it didn't.

Isn't it more likely that instead of going 6-9 when he came back in, he went 1-9? Isn't it also possible to say that instead of "sparking" his team with some life, that he would drag them down further by his poor play? Isn't both of those "guesses" more likely to occur given his play in the first half?

Actually, no, that's not more likely, that's just your guess. Since Don Nelson decided to keep Baron on the bench, I guess we will never know. A shooter is more likely to shoot his way out of a slump than not and that is not a guess since I've actually seen it happen many times before in the NBA.

Ellis will be the primary focus of this off-season and of the offense come next year.

That's if he re-signs with the team this off-season since he will also be a free agent besides The Beard.

This rivialry keeps getting better and better even with scenerios that take place off the field. To have fans this dedicated to their respective teams is a great thing for baseball and I won't ever knock it. Being a Mets fan, I love having this kind of rivalry against the Phillies except it isn't quite as interesting as the Yanks/Red Sox even though we're as passionate as fans as they are. All I can say is, good try Gino Castignoli, Red Sox nation loves you while all Yankee fans now loathe you.

I don't get why people are getting their knickers all in a bunch. Obviously, she wanted to play for Team USA but was denied of that "privilage" and decided to take it upon herself to see if she could compete for Team Ivan Drago. As soon as she was in the mist of being able to play for Russia, Team USA came calling and was like, "Hey Becky, wanna come play for us now?" It's ridiculous how people are saying that she should get boo'ed and all that when she's really not doing anything wrong or illegal here. What is so wrong of her to want to compete in the Olympics but not being able to do so because Team USA denied her of that chance but Russia did? Maybe I'm missing the point here but does this now make her unpatriotic or even a communist? Let's ban her from even entering American soil, that'll learn her.

Point taken, yerfatma but since you admitted that you "don't watch UFC/ MMA", the one thing that you have to understand is that this isn't like when "you're 8 years old and maybe you get a scratch", these guys are actually professional fighters. These guys train as hard as any athlete and are quite aware that this is a full contact sport. To have these guys train for as long as they do and to finally have their match and to lose in 8 seconds is absolutely pathetic. Any sport that deals with punching or kicking to another individual, the first thing you learn is to protect yourself at all times and for this to happen is just a complete and total embarrassment.

posted to Culture at 5:46 AM CDT

I don't see what the big deal is about. What I'm tired of is having people that have nothing to do with these families, go all up & arms about the safety of these children. Oh please! Let the parent do the parenting and mind your own business, people. Kids have so many different contact, physical sports growing up and this so happens to be one of them now. I can remember being 6 years old and my mom signing me up for Tae Kwon Do classes, boxing, wrestling, football, baseball and basketball, not all at once though but you catch my drift. In the ever growing sport of MMA, teaching kids the basic moves is very similar to teaching kids about boxing and wrestling since they have on the protective gear. If the parents don't see anything wrong with this, why should anyone else for that matter?
