Arnold "Red" Auerbach Dead at 89. Legendary Boston Celtics' Coach, General Manager, Chairman of the Board, President, and all-around architect of some of the best teams in NBA history passed away Saturday night of an apparent heart attack. Said author John Feinstein, "I never thought he'd die." The Celtics, who announced his passing, have also dedicated the upcoming season to Auerbach.

red had his way of building great teams,he was a master of getting the most out his players. His way to sign a future star was to bring him to boston, take the person to chinatown for a good lunch, contract in pocket ,have the prospect sign the contract over a fortune cookie and tea, before the prospect ever knew what was happening. I hope they have some very good cigars for him upstairs.

MORE Bad News for Yankees The Yankees can't catch a break lately. With a pitching staff that is old and stale, and an outfield full of AAA players, the Yankees are in serious trouble. Will Pavano ever pitch for the Yanks again??

Doug Flutie Retires After 22 years, Doug Flutie decided to join Gerald Phelan in the ranks of retired Patriots. The Boston Globe was clearly prepared, with a list of stories from his career, a couple of front pages from the Hail Mary upset of Miami and a photo gallery. When you're finished, you can start hitting F5 on Flutie's Wikipedia entry to see how soon it gets updated.

Flutie was a good ballplayer, beyond his physical stature.Remember he is an ardent worker for autism which afflics one of his children. The Patriots would be smart in employing Flutie in a visable manner for the team

Pena has mentors in Ortiz, Manny
"Born and raised in Laguna Salada in the Dominican Republic (Ortiz and Ramirez are from Santo Domingo), Pena grew up in a modest home with his brother, Hannsel, now a Minor League player with the Reds, and two sisters. He was signed to a Major League contract by the Yankees at the age of 17 in 1998 in a move that later proved to be a blessing and a curse. The good part is that the money helped the Penas out of poverty. The not-so-good part of the big-money deal was that it rushed his development, exposing him to Major League competition before he was ready.

He's off to a good start! Mo doubled and brought in & scored a run in his only at bat....

this was a very good move by Theo.Ortiz has the right frame of mind and stature tolead Pena to be a very good everyday player.Arroyo was the most unpredicable of the Red Sox pitchers, and with the likes of papelbon Lester and others on the farm,Theo made the right move

Titans give McNair the cold shoulder Steve McNair showed up to work out with the Tennessee Titans on Monday, but the 11-year veteran was told him to go home. McNair and the team have been squabbling for some time about his future. Was this a necessary move by the Titans to protect themselves, or a classless act by an ungrateful organization?

Athletic departments at State schools are not profitable Via Sports Law Blog, a summary of a new study by Mark Alesia of the Indianapolis Star:

… athletic departments at taxpayer-funded universities nationwide receive more than $1 billion in student fees and general school funds and services, and that without such outside funding, fewer than 10 percent of athletic departments would have been able to support themselves with ticket sales, television contracts and other revenue-generating sports sources. In fact, most would have lost more than $5 million.
Alesia has also compiled a database of NCAA financial reports, for all you frustrated economists out there.
