Scottie returns to the Bulls:

Scottie Pippen has come to his senses and returns home to Chicago. According to ESPN, Pippen received a 2 year, $10 million deal. Even though Jordan won't be there, Pippen should be able to step up and lead the struggling, young Bulls. With over 18000 career points, he should add a nice dimension to the Bulls rebuilding process.

The AL wins the All-Star game: Blah blah blah. The AL won this exhibition. The teams that were picked were quite misrepresented in terms of "stars". Jayson Stark of ESPN wrote an article on the difference Internet voting makes. For example, Gary Sheffield got only 273,488 votes at the baseball parks, where he ended up with 1,259,790 votes total (a 986,302 difference, by far the largest vote difference) Individuals like Torii Hunter were not voted in because lack of Internet votes.

What's more important though is that this game represents (roughly) the mid-point of the baseball season. Jayson Stark has an amazing trivia article about the midseason. Did you know that the NY Yankees had a 6890 game hitting streak (as a team) until the Astros used 6 pitchers to break it? And that Torii Hunter was ejected on his own Bobblehead night? And that the Marlins lost by 20 runs and then won by 20 runs a few days later, but it's still no feat in comparison to the 1979 Chicago Cubs who on May 17, 1979 gave up 20 runs to the Phillies and then within an hour scored 20 runs to eventually lose 23-22 to the Phillies? Enough trivia. it's a great article.

Back to the business of baseball. Go cubs.

Protesters stop the Tour de France temporarily: Supporters of radical farmer Jose Bove ran into the the road and block cyclists about 91 miles into today's stage. Armstrong finished about 20 minutes behind the stage winner, but still held the lead because the other tour leaders were in the same pack. FoxSports's coverage and MSNBC coverage The Tour officials ruled it a "normal race incident" meaning that shit happens. (side note:) Bove is an anti-globalization activist who protests genetically modified foods.

Welcome to the Nextel Cup!???: It appears that Nextel is in line to sign a deal with NASCAR to become the official sponsor replacing RJR's Winston brand. According to the ESPN article NASCAR went looking for a new sponsor after RJR indicated it may need to pull out.

I think the Cubs should ask Steve to throw out the first pitch and have Alou walk him out there. For those of you who haven't seen, The Smoking Gun has an article here detailing their efforts to contact him. Poor guy. He's a dork with his headset on listening to the game and probably paid a buttload for his only ticket to the game.

This is just stupid. Even though she has the right to say whatever she pleases, she is just trying to round up publicity for a dying (?/dead?) sport -- Women's senior golf. Honestly I didn't even know it existed. There are stupid people born every second... and she is sure one of them.

The band helmets rock!!! they are for nothing more than decoration purposes (and the occasional deflection from road trip nightmares).

I think the band outfits are awesome. I only wish that my university (U of Iowa) would do something like this. It would create a consistent color scheme for everything, done fashionably by good designers.

The 100 Mile-per-hour fastball...

this is a great link. I'd like to see hard stats of pitchers over time...like roger clemens in 85 versus clemens in 90 versus clemens in 03. Just curious to see if his speed has increased, or decreased. I'm betting it has pretty much stayed the same and/or increased.

Final Page 2

Bag Man -- Even the writer admitted that Wrigley got the shaft...and that the ratings were biased towards newer stadiums. Sad to say though...since Wrigley is by far the best field in baseball. =)

Stoked :

In Spring 2002, Helen Stickler came to the University of Iowa to present the almost-completed premeire of this movie at a skate film festival. It's a very tragic story because Helen spoke afterwards about talking with Gator over the phone while he is in prison. She said that after many conversations with him he told her that he was in love with her...and kind of stalked her from prison. Stickler also did a documentary on Shepard Fairey of Obey The Giant fame. Not sports related, but the ideas that Fairey came up with...and is still promoting is amazing. btw. Stoked is highly recommended (even though I saw it with some of the audio missing ;)

mbd1> The top men bowlers average 217-225 while the top women bowlers average 208-215. Yes there is a slight difference and I'm not sure why. As a life long bowler (grew up in the "YABA professionals" -- get scholarship $$ instead of cash), I'm still confused over why women have not stepped up in this sport (don't argue this...it's a sport). (note: pull stats from the PBA and the PWBA) Strength is a bit more of a factor than some assume. It's not the fact that the ball is thrown harder, but its that a different weight ball is used. Many women use 15# balls while men use 16#. That 1# makes a big difference in carrying weight through the pins. (physics lessons optional)

Protesters stop the Tour de France temporarily

In terms of spectators "participating" in the action...did anyone see tonight's All-star game? The moron who used his glove to snag the double by Andruw Jones? We were discussing what idiocy this is. Southside Chicago has some real stupid people. Remember the father/son who attacked Kansas City couch Gamboa? I bet within 5 years MLB puts up clear plastic (like NHL) to protect the players from the fans. It's getting stupid. I'm glad I'm a Cubs fan.

You can check out Mike Tyson tonight (and maybe tomorrow night) on the Jimmy Kimmel Show as they are showing re-runs of when Tyson was a co-host.
