Sports Bio

I have two favourite sporting events. One as an adult and the other as a child.

The most entertaining sporting event I ever saw as an adult was January 9, 1986. Toronto Maple Leafs at home versus the Edmonton Oilers, 99, Mess, Coffey, and the rest of the boys. At this point in my life I had seasons tickets for the Leafs, I lived in London Ontario, about 2 hrs west of Toronto and as a result sold most of my seats to friends who lived closer to Toronto. I kept tickets for 5 or six games that year and thankfully that was one of them. The Leafs led 5-1 at the end of the first period. The Oilers tied the game at 6, and early in the 3rd, Edmonton led 8-7. Final score 11-9 Toronto! We almost blew the roof off the Carlton Street Cashbox that night.

When I was only 7 years old, living near Toronto, my mother and father threw us kids into the car, drove us to Malton (now Pearson) International Airport. From there, we flew to Montreal, Mom, Dad, my 3 sisters, my brother and I. We watched the Expos play the Astros in a double header. We picniced in the park outside Jarry Park before the games, went for a swim in the pool just beyond the right field fence, and most importantly got Rusty Staub's autograph. I still have it! We flew back to Toronto the same night, we even got to go sit in the cockpit of the Air Canada jet. That's something that wouldn't happen today!
It was the first time any of us, my parents included, had been on a plane. Way too cool.

I've seen the Leafs 4 times at the Air Canada Centre, each time as the guest of friends in their private box. It's the only way to fly, if you can afford it.

I've seen plenty of NFL games in Detroit and Buffalo, C.F.L. games in Olympic Stadium, Frank Clair Stadium, C.N.E. Stadium and Skydome(Rogers Centre).

My family had seasons seats for the Blue Jays for the first 8 years of their existence. I could only guess at how many games I attended, maybe 350? I go to Rogers Centre a couple of times a year for Jays games now, and Comerica Park to see the Tigers at least once a season.

I've been to a Toronto Rock lacrosse game, entirely too much fun and entertainment.

I've seen 2 N.B.A. games live, the Raptors home opener in MoPete's rookie season, and at The Palace of Auburn Hills, against the 76'ers, on the night the Pistons honoured Chuck Daly.

My two sports loves are the Toronto Maple Leafs and the late, lamented Montreal Expos.
May The 'Spo's rest in peace. Damn you Jeffrey Loria, Bud Selig, and the rest of you baseball bastards.

Official nears final whistle after 30 years Jake Ireland had barely cracked the lid on his coffee.
"I heard a new line from a fan this year," he said, smiling.
It was in Hamilton, and Ireland, a long-time referee, has always loved working
C.F.L. games in Hamilton. The stands at Ivor Wynne Stadium are snug against the field, which fosters the growth of a certain rapport between officials and the paying customers, like the one who yelled at Ireland this season.
"Jake," the man yelled. "I found your cell phone."
There was a pause.
"I know it's yours," he continued, "because there's six missed calls on it."

Plunging dollar gives sports leagues a currency conniption The sudden nosedive of the loonie this month and its continuing volatility threaten to wreak havoc with the finances of Canadian sports businesses that face heavy expenses in U.S. dollars, compounding the inevitable woes stemming from any sustained weakness in the economy.

"We don't know where the bottom is," said Toronto Blue Jays president Paul Godfrey, who estimates that each one-cent drop costs the Jays about $760,000 on a payroll of $100-million. "It's like falling into a black hole."

Calgary's (Washington's) Cinderella Man It's the tale of a 27-year-old career minor-leaguer who finally gets his shot in the NHL. Better yet, the hard-luck defenceman gets to debut in his home city against the team he grew up watching, with his mom, dad, older brother and some 40-plus friends in attendance hanging on his every shift. That's what transpired last night at the Pengrowth Saddledome,.....in an underdog's tale of patience, perseverance and love for a sister who died eight years ago in a heart-wrenching accident on the Trans-Canada Highway.

A criminal is someone that violated a law

I've had a few speeding tickets in my life, and even a seatbelt violation or two, and maybe 3 or 4 parking tickets, now that I think about it.

None of these things make me a criminal.

I have crossed the Canadian/U.S.A. border many times in the last 5 years (best guess, 40 times). At no time was I refused entry or even questioned about traffic violations. To call a contravention of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act a crime is absurd and ridiculous.

The following is from Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada.

www.voyage.gc.ca

If you have a criminal record, no matter how minor or how long ago the offence, you may be refused entry to the United States. There may also be problems in travelling through U.S. airport facilities. A pardon for an offence issued by Canadian authorities is not recognized under U.S. law, for purposes of entry into the United States. If you have a criminal record, you should contact one of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) ports of entry well in advance. If you are ineligible to enter the United States, you may apply for a waiver of ineligibility. This will involve completing Form I-192, "Advance Permission to Enter the United States as a Non-Immigrant." There is a fee and it may take several months to process your application. Waiver application forms are available from any port of entry to the United States, any pre-clearance site in Canada, the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa, or one of the U.S. consulates in Canada.

U.S. ports of entry are computerized and connected to a centralized database. Information is readily available on criminal convictions in both Canada and the United States. Even though you may have entered the United States without hindrance in the past, you could run into difficulty if your record shows a criminal conviction or a previous denial of entry. Attempting to gain entry without a waiver could result in several weeks of detention at a USCIS facility.

Long story short:
If you have a criminal record, you probably won't be allowed into the U.S. Speaking from personal experience, and also having traveled with friends who I know have had tickets, these do not constitute crimes.

Lesnar proves size does matter Despite it coming just weeks after Bernard Hopkins proved that a 45-year-old combat athlete doesn't have to turn into primordial paste in the ring, returning UFC champion Randy Couture -- as much an MMA institution as the cage itself -- failed in his attempt to write yet another storybook epilogue to a peerless career.

Hello BornIcon (presumptious ID?),

presumptious is not a word. Perhaps you meant presumptuous.

To allege sanctimoniousness regarding someones ID, when representing oneself as Plaintruth is humourous at the least, and hypocritical at its height.

*A few words of advice: don't use big words you don't know how to spell.

That must have been some thorough research. It's right there in the article, third last paragraph.

*In an ironic twist, Cuban is also the majority owner of Sharesleuth.com, an investigative blog designed to sniff out and expose securities fraud, according to site editor Christopher Carey.*

Paying the money back doesn't change the fact he committed a crime.

Mark Cuban has not been charged with a crime , but rather, has had a civil suit brought against him.

Not only that, but he's only been sued, not found to have committed the civil impropriety.

Just a bit of a rush to judgement there?

Drood: Your ignorance of the situation is hilarious.

Anyone want to tak a bet on how successful he'll be?

What Might Have Been: My first impression upon seeing Herb Score pitch (on TV) was, "The Red Sox will never beat this guy." Those who knew him best sum it up when they say he would have been better than Koufax or any other left-hander.
