Collina Speaks! to the NY Times no less: If I respect only a few referees, Pierluigi Collina is first among all. Though he claims no dissatisfaction at the 45 years old retirement rule, the man who stood out among the stars at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups is going strong and gives the Times a glimpse into his thinking.

New Wii User: Recommend a soccer title?: As stated on the label. For the first time, a store had a Wii in stock so the Mrs. and I brought her home. Never had a game console before so I have no experience with the titles out there and wonder if I should throw down on Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 or FIFA Soccer 2008. Please note that I'm not terribly coordinated or graceful before offering advice.

Close season is almost over: The Community Shield is in 36 hours, the EPL opens in another week. Who made the most of the transfer window? Will the Top 4 do anything but play musical chairs? Scolari has come to Chelsea, kept Lampard and Drogba (so far) and wants Robinho. SAF has not lost Lady Boy and not bought Berbatov. Arsenal bought teen heartthrob Aaron Ramsey and Samir Nasri. Liverpool got Keane, Dossena, Degen and Ngog.

Judge Sides with Redskins: The Washington Redskins have won the latest round in a 16-year court battle against a group of American Indians, prevailing on a technicality that again skirts the issue of whether the team’s nickname is racially offensive. In a ruling dated June 25 and first circulated Thursday, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ruled that the youngest of the seven Native American plaintiffs waited too long after turning 18 to file the lawsuit that attempts to revoke the Redskins trademarks.

Minnow's harpoon on target again: 19th place in the Championship hosting No. 3 in the Prem and for the second round in a row the Tykes do the business. 96 years since they were last in the semi-finals and they won the trophy that year. With Harry Redknapp's Pompey taking down the Red Devils, the last four will include at least two second division or lower clubs. And possibly a third depending on if Middlesbrough or Cardiff play to recent form tomorrow. Cliche or not, this is the beauty of the FA Cup.

Wilson and the Cowboy's D coordinator should be run out of town. How they could go from from a total and complete shutdown of Eli Manning in Week 15 to two 75+ yard first play from scrimmage touchdowns at the end of the next game to 50+ points to the Eagles and keep their jobs is a mystery worthy of a Dateline special.
I was glad to see Mike Singletary get picked up after taking control of the Niners. Still, I wonder who he'll have at QB in September and if the newly anointed Jed York will decide he needs to show Mommy his value from Day 1.
Despite winning the division, I think Norv Turner is gone unless he gets to the Super Bowl or at least makes a strong showing in the AFC Championship game.
@Newbie: Carroll has won the Pac 10 seven years in a row plus two national championships in that time and has been tipped for an NFL return every season, so how the bleep is he the "hot college coach of the moment"?

a) There will always be one team screaming about being left out of the title game--look at pro leagues where one conference or division dominates and the loser of that semi-final can legitimately claim to be a better title game opponent than the one which gets in.
b) Texas cannot win the BCS title if the title game is OU vs. Florida as the title by contract goes to the game's winner. At best they might get a split title if the AP (writers) votes them over the top. Apparently the Longhorns will meet Ohio State in the Fiesta and Alabama will go to the Sugar Bowl, though I think the schools should lobby to meet up to give themselves the best shot at a split title.

For all the hurt Spurs were in, spending nearly $10M on a manager when guys like Mancini and Donadoni are out there seems a waste of money, but then look at the team's summer spending. They did get the three points today but...
