Cheerleader death renews calls for increased safety steps. "Figures show 50 percent of injuries to young women in high school athletics are from cheerleading," [state Rep. Peter J. Koutoujian, chairman of the Public Health Oversight Committee] said. "These girls don’t wear pads, and they’re pushing the boundaries at every turn. While the boys' sports, contact sports, get all the attention, there's a great deal of injuries these young women endure."

Nevermore! Ravens Fire Brian Billick The Super Bowl XXXV winning coach has been fired after a 5-11 season, his eighth with the team and sixth straight year without a playoff win. Owner Steve Bisciotti told Billick weeks ago that he'd be retained for another year. "I just changed my mind," he said.

Hope Solo Kicked Off Team for Consolation Game In response to Hope Solo's comments after the Brazil loss, Coach Greg Ryan said the benched goalkeeper won't play in Sunday's third-place World Cup game and won't even be on the bench, in spite of her apologies to the public and her teammates. "We have moved forward with 20 players who have stood by each other, who have battled for each other," said Ryan. "And when the hard times came -- and the Brazil game was a hard time -- they stood strong. Now it's the 20 who have stuck together who will be ready to go out and compete against Norway."

Oklahoma State Coach Mike Gundy: Leave My Quarterback Alone! At a press conference after his team defeated Texas Tech Saturday, Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy launched into a three-minute tirade against a Daily Oklahoman columnist over an article that called benched quarterback Bobby Reid a momma's boy who plays scared. "That article had to have been written by a person who doesn't have a child," Gundy said. "Here's all that kid did: He goes to class; he's respectful to the media; he's respectful to the public; and he's a good kid. He's not a professional athlete, and he doesn't deserve to be kicked when he's down."

I find it interesting that they typical sportswriter, who has no experience playing the sport they are writing about, rip a kid for things they would be crapping their pants if they were in his situation. I agree, if this was a professional athlete, then the athlete should be held more accountable. It is just sad that the only talent these sportswriters have is to be glib, or cruel.
McLaren lose 2007 points, fined $100m but Alonso and Hamilton keep their driver's points. They are, however, barred from appearing on the podium the rest of the season. More news here.

Athletes of today need to have their "posse" and "posses" cost money. (j/k) A lot of the athletes just think that the money will keep coming. They buy the big houses, the big cars, etc. A few divorces later and a knee injury here and there, they are standing on corners begging for cash.
Say it is so, Joe! ESPN to replace Joe Theismann with Ron Jaworski on Monday Night Football. Joy at change tempered by fact that ESPN actually did something right for a change. Waiting for other shoe to drop ("Check out Joe Theismann's nightly segment on Pardon the Interruption!").

Equal pay for equal play: the All England Club announced plans to offer equal prize money across the board for men and women at this year's Wimbledon tournament. Of the four Grand Slams, the Australian Open and US Open also offer equal prize money; the French Open offered equal prizes to the men's and women's champions in 2006, but does not offer equal prize money throughout the tournament.
