Dirtsurfing. From Sunday's SF Chronicle Magazine: "Invented in Australia about six years ago, the dirtsurfer is a 64-inch-long contraption with two BMX wheels and no handlebars that can reach speeds up to 70 mph." These things aren't exactly street-legal in the US, but you can get yours from Aussie inventor Graeme Attey's company, dirtsurf, which, as it turns out, sends you to dirtsurferusa.com (which isn't very useful).

I've been a fan of the Dirtsurfer for several years and have been riding with my son here in Virginia. The article in SF Chronicle focused on the extreme aspects of those two riders and gave little attention to the fact that it is so easy to ride and easy to control the speed (it has brakes). I even taught my 8 year old daughter to ride. It IS street legal in the U.S. except where coasting devices aren't allowed... like in some parks and on the Blue Ridge Parkway. As for the website... I asked Graeme about that and he assured me that they are working to get that up and running very soon. Dirtsurfer has granted me tremendous access to their company planning for my blogs on Dirtsurfer and Inline Boarding. I post the latest there. Thanks for coverage of this fledgling sport. -Brian
