Sports Bio

A life-long Ipswich Town fan, I'm used to dim and distant triumphs, backed up with more recent disappointment. So you'll not be surprised to hear I follow the Dolphins, (0-2 in Superbowls in my time).

For a trivial aside, I have a career record of one catch for nine yards from future Hall of Fame Quarterbacks, when Dan Marino visited the UK in 1986.

He looked quite useful.

Substitute England won't be at Euro 2008, but neither will Frenchman Vikash Dhorasoo. Despite playing in every qualification match for the 2006 World Cup, Dhorasoo got just 16 minutes on the field during the tournament and retired from international football following France's defeat in the final. A year later he was gone from the game altogether.

Tomorrow the film Dhorasoo shot at the 06 World Cup, "Substitute" (warning: contains French), is released in the UK allowing you to watch a man fall out of love with football.

Injured Players need to bow out Brett Favre was injured yet continued to play; throwing 3 picks in a sad loss to Miami. He knew he was injured and should have sat out and at least provided his team the opportunity to win.

Go back and watch the Jets beat the Dolphins in week one. The winning touchdown from a healthy Brett Favre is a fourth down heave to no one in particular.

Sometimes he gets away with them, sometimes he doesn't.

Broncos Fire Shanahan After 14 Seasons No head coach is safe! If Mike Shanahan can be fired as head coach of the Denver Broncos, is any NFL head coach immune from being voted off the island?

posted by jjzucal at 06:59 PM on December 30

I'm not sure I should be after the way the Broncos capitulated this season, but I'm shocked.

This should make the next fantasy season a little easier however. I never went anywhere near Bronco runningbacks because Shanahan changed his mind about which one he liked every nine seconds.

Off with their heads! The NFL's Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns and New York Jets fire Rod Marinelli, Romeo Crennel and Eric Mangini, respectively, from their head coaching positions. Who's next?

So he could still end up in Detroit?

When Punters and Kickers Attack Some NFL kickers and punters are starting to make tackles, Judy Battista of the New York Times reports in a story with a lot of great anecdotes. "Before a preseason game against the Chiefs in the 1970s, the returner George Atkinson of the Raiders joked with Kansas City kicker Jan Stenerud ... that he was not a real player because he never tackled anybody. Stenerud tackled Atkinson twice during that game. Stenerud said an angry John Madden, the Raiders' coach at the time, was said to have asked this about Atkinson, 'How could you get tackled twice by a Norwegian skier?'"

Let's Make NFL Extra Points Interesting

Instead of having allowing the place kicker to kick all extra points in the NFL, imagine if the player who scored the touchdown had to kick the extra point. If the player who scored is injured or completely incapable of making an extra point, then you have to go for two.

Hey, sorry about the self link. I didn't realize that was so frowned upon in this community, Hoser does it every week with his NFL picks.

Canadians are allowed to self-link. It's an obscure rule.

Lesnar proves size does matter Despite it coming just weeks after Bernard Hopkins proved that a 45-year-old combat athlete doesn't have to turn into primordial paste in the ring, returning UFC champion Randy Couture -- as much an MMA institution as the cage itself -- failed in his attempt to write yet another storybook epilogue to a peerless career.

As much as I was interested in seeing what was up with Lesnar, I'm looking forward to 92 more than I was 91.

Griffin-Evans and Jackson-Silva have a lot of promise and then there's Nogueira-Mir, with the winner to take on Lesnar, which means we could see a Lesnar-Mir rematch.

"You will never see a more dramatic conclusion to any motor race... let alone a grand prix, and the result of it all is that, in the most harum scarum way possible - he doesn't make it easy for himself, does he? - Lewis Hamilton is the world champion." (Video here for the moment.)

"When your actions destroy one car and damage another, yeah, I'd call a drive through more than fair."

And so Nico's drive through for sunday was... where, exactly? This is the point I was trying to get across - you shouldn't misread my question as some sort of McLaren fan-boy nonsense. In my time watching F1 I've come to the opinion that the Stewards close their eyes for the first few corners, because there has been bumping and boring and front wings coming off in Turn 1s around the world for decades without action, (including this sunday), so I was perplexed as to why it was that specific incident that woke them up.

When it was followed later by the Bourdais penalty, I marked it down to general buffoonery.

"did the team contact the stewards? It's fine for everyone to sit and criticise but you have NO idea what is going on in the pitlane and the communication that's going on. Perhaps STR didn't complain to the stewards. "

STR, (or any other team), don't need to complain to the Stewards for them to investigate an incident.

The Race Director can report an incident to the Stewards for investigation, or the Stewards can contact the Race Director and say "we think this incident needs our investigation - please advise." Neither of those options require the action of any team to trigger.

An exciting (if not excellent) finish to a repeatedly bizarre season.

The officiating got in the way of my enjoyment of the season somewhat - I could sort of ignore the Spa debacle because Hamilton put himself into a position where the stewards had to make a decision, but the drive through penalty assessed to Hamilton in Japan was bizarre. He outbraked himself into the first corner and forced Raikonnen wide and picked up a drive through for that, whereas in the last event Rosberg crashed into the back of Coulthard and Trulli forced Bourdais off onto the grass and they're considered "racing incidents" not even worthy of examination.

And that was still only the second craziest decision in Japan, behind the penalty for Bourdais for who knows what - "being on the track" perhaps.

Maybe everyone should paint their cars red.

Now I hope that Renault, BMW and RBR are all on their A-game over the off-season and pull out ultra-competitive cars for 2009, so that we can have an six man race for the title between Alonso, Raikkonen, Massa, Hamilton, Vettel and Kubica.

If the stewards could stay out of the way of that, that'd be awesome.

Small Bug Only issue I've noticed recently. In the member pages (my own is the link cited), the old menu appears in the upper right corner, as it was before the remodel. And assumably due to said remodel, all the links but "home", "about", and "locker room" are dead. If this has been hit before, my apologies. And if this is in process, again the apologies. Just thought I'd bring it to light.

At least the NFL sent over a decent game this year. It's a shame the two teams had to check their defence at customs though.

Tottenham Hotspur Clean House, Dump Coach Juande Ramos Spurs, with just two points after nine matches, have fired coach Juande Ramos, assistant coaches Gus Poyet and Marcos Alvarez, and sporting director Damien Comolli. No Premiership team has started this poorly and avoided relegation in 10 years.

posted by rcade at 07:04 PM on October 26

Another "triumph" for the Director of Football role here, as Ramos is fired for trying to make a team out of the decisions of Damien Comolli.

The appointment of Redknapp makes a severe about-face at White Hart Lane as they replace Comolli/Ramos with one guy who's not exactly scared to wheel and deal on the player market. It wouldn't surprised me to see Mr Crouch make his way from the coast to London in the January transfer window.

And unlike Ramos, Harry won't need a translator to point out what a bunch of lazy planks a lot of his players are.

I notice Spurs are winning today too.

What a terrible article. On par with the stupid British Press articles claiming Americans don't know anything about soccer, except with really bad writing too.

There will be people at the Saints - Chargers games who are there on a corporate jolly but Roy Keane's Prawn Sandwich brigade go to "real" football games too - just look at the empty ring of "Club Wembley" seats next time you get to see the "home of football" on tv.

The support for NFL football in the UK isn't huge, but it is hardcore. Almost all of my friends are knowledgable about the game at least to a level where they could tell you the difference between a Wide Receiver and a Tight End, (if not between a Flanker and a Split End) and a certain bunch of us have been following the game for more than two decades.

When you add in the fact that this is the only NFL game in Eruope, you'll also get the rabid German NFL fans over and I'd bet a small amount of my own money that the knowledge of this crowd would stand up pretty well to the knowledge present at any US-based NFL game.

The level of excitement won't be the same, but that's because 90% of the fans there won't be Saints or Chargers fans, they'll be NFL fans, there to see the game rather than the teams.
