Sports Bio

I'm Australian, but a Pom by birth. So, watching Australia beat up England at sport is a bit like watching a family fight.

My main reason for being here is to eavesdrop on quality discussions on sport, society and culture. I like to think I've also added a bit to the mix.

I am learning about North American sports, mainly from this site. I think I like baseball, but I have this uncanny feeling that if I start to get involved, I'll end up being a Cubs fan. Ditto for the Lions in American football. It must be a self esteem problem. I am clearly not drawn to success, as my lifelong devotion to Derby County indicates.

Baseball versus Cricket While the NLCS and ALCS occupy our minds, over in England they took a pub table debate and put it into practice. What if a team of professional cricketers took on a baseball team on the diamond? Who would win?

Thanks Dr J. While I know nothing at all about CFL, hanging out with you guys makes me feel part of the family.

(In case you were wondering, I'm the oddly dressed Uncle crouched in the corner, the one you only see at Christmas, making strange peeping noises and eating nits from my hair).

CFL Pick 'Em, Division Finals Edmonton and B.C. both win on the road, and head into the strongholds of Calgary and Montreal. Closer to home, BoKnows bats .714 for a strong opening week. Can he keep up the pace? Make your picks inside.

Obama is a soccer fan. West Ham invite Obama to watch a game at Upton Park. Apparently, he watched a Hammers game in 2003 while visiting his half-sister in London (article doesn't say if it was live, home, away or on the telly). Obama's older daughter plays on a soccer team. Change we can believe in.

CFL Pick 'Em, Playoff Edition Were you wistfully checking the CFL Pick 'Em standings all summer, wishing you could play? Or maybe you're looking for revenge/continuity after a disappointing/excellent regular season? Either way, here's your chance as the CFL heads into the playoffs. We begin anew and it's anyone's game. Make your picks inside.

MLB Post-Season Pick 'Em, Final Standings BoKnows plays through the rain and picks up three out of four points for the big win.

Bugger. Only one point after the division series.

But congrats to Bo Knows, and to holden. As I demonstrate with these things, it takes blind luck to end up mid table, but to finish top or bottom takes some serious effort.

Collina Speaks! to the NY Times no less If I respect only a few referees, Pierluigi Collina is first among all. Though he claims no dissatisfaction at the 45 years old retirement rule, the man who stood out among the stars at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups is going strong and gives the Times a glimpse into his thinking.

posted by billsaysthis at 05:07 PM on November 01

Agreed. He was one of the first refs to use video analysis of games, and then to brief his assistants with it before important matches - what to look out for, who gets offside, different styles of play etc.

The interview, on the other hand, does not reveal much. I suppose because he is still in an important position with Serie A and B. He refuses to talk about the match fixing/ref influencing scandal, when I would have liked to hear what he really thinks. No definitive views on increasing the number of officials or use of video evidence either, although he leans towards a non-technology solution. The use of additional assistants around the penalty box is interesting, and he notes that it gave him more 'command' of the penalty area. I also think the presence of more officials might make players think twice about all the pushing and shoving that goes on at corners, for example.

Plunging dollar gives sports leagues a currency conniption The sudden nosedive of the loonie this month and its continuing volatility threaten to wreak havoc with the finances of Canadian sports businesses that face heavy expenses in U.S. dollars, compounding the inevitable woes stemming from any sustained weakness in the economy.

"We don't know where the bottom is," said Toronto Blue Jays president Paul Godfrey, who estimates that each one-cent drop costs the Jays about $760,000 on a payroll of $100-million. "It's like falling into a black hole."

posted by tommytrump at 08:27 PM on October 30

With the Blue Jays, you can see that impact that each shift has, if your expenses/contracts are written in USD and your income is primarily in Canadian dollars.

*I know how they feel. A couple of months ago our dollar was worth USD 0.98, now it's USD 0.65 and dropping. Luckily some of my payment contracts are written in USD.

I'm going to wait and see what Tommy picks, then go against, just to make the final week interesting.

However, I will maintain my policy of always picking Edmonton and never picking Hamilton. If you need to ask...
