Vick to still play. "The Associated Press reported that after consulting with the Falcons, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and top league officials agreed Wednesday to let Vick play as the legal process determines the facts. A person with knowledge of the meeting, who requested anonymity so the case would not be influenced, said the NFL would stick to that position for the foreseeable future, despite its new personal conduct policy, the AP reported. Beilein takes UM job. The ironic thing here is Beilein once complained that the only thing he didn't like about the WVU job was he worked in a place where the football program overshadowed the basketball program. I wonder what he will find at Big Blue?

Turner to coach Bolts. The man won two Superbowl rings as the O Coordinator in Dallas. However, he has a combined record of 58-82-1 as a head coach in Washington and Oakland. All of the people interviewed by the Chargers (to my knowledge) had at least one Superbowl ring as a player or coach. Did they pick the right one?

What's a coach really worth? The knee-jerk perception isn't kind to Oxford. We live in a state that under funds important items, that ranks in the bottom percentile of most U.S. social and educational categories, and yet Oxford High School's football coach is being paid $105,000 a year. No prep football coach in Alabama makes more.

First documented US MMA death. Samuel Vasquez, a 35-year-old mixed martial artist from Houston, Texas, died on Friday.

Many sports have resulted in the death of participants. Boxing has probably had some of the most famous of these. I am fearful that, since MMA is thought by some to be a hyper-violent sport, this death could result in some lame knee-jerk reaction. Can you say mandatory head gear?
A-Rod Opts Out of Contract He has taken off th pinstripes. I think he did this now to divorce himself from the managerial decision coming tomorrow. I also think that he knows something about Posada, Rivera, and Pettitte that others don't. Where's he going: nobody knows.

A-Rod is going to land at Pittsburgh.
Oh, wait a minute...that would require they actually HAVE a checkbook to open up first...sorry, please continue the discussion.
Hope Solo Kicked Off Team for Consolation Game In response to Hope Solo's comments after the Brazil loss, Coach Greg Ryan said the benched goalkeeper won't play in Sunday's third-place World Cup game and won't even be on the bench, in spite of her apologies to the public and her teammates. "We have moved forward with 20 players who have stood by each other, who have battled for each other," said Ryan. "And when the hard times came -- and the Brazil game was a hard time -- they stood strong. Now it's the 20 who have stuck together who will be ready to go out and compete against Norway."

There is a saying 'down South': "Don't air your dirty laundry in the front yard." In other words, Solo had the right to say what she did, but not in a public forum. That lacked class. If she wants to air a grievance against Ryan, do so in his office, locker room, to his bosses, etc.; not in front of the world press.
Women's World Cup 2007. Good grief. I didn't even know it was on, and it's almost in the quarterfinals by now. Germany, Brazil and England thru to the quarters. The final first round matches to be played over the next two days will decide the rest (top contenders include Korea, USA, Australia, Norway and Denmark). Match schedule (from ESPN Soccernet, including results and ESPN telecast times).

I thought the US was lucky to draw with N. Korea. Their off-ball movement was not well timed and passing was shabby. They really turned it around for game 2 against Sweden.
Browns Trade Newly Benched QB Frye to Seahawks Two weeks ago, when Charlie Frye won the Cleveland Browns' starting QB job, team GM Phil Savage touted the decision and said "let's see what Charlie can do with a full deck." Ten passes and one interception into the new season, Frye has been traded to the Seattle Seahawks for a sixth-round draft pick.

Mike Nolan scores one for the suit. The 49ers coach has fought the NFL and Reebook since 2005 for the right to wear a suit on game day. Nolan wants to do it to honor his dad, a former 49ers coach himself, who is now suffering from Alzheimer's and prostate cancer. Nolan has the right to wear suits only at home games. Fans have started wearing suits to games to support his cause. Meanwhile, Reebok is perfectly fine with Bill Bellichick wearing hoodies with cutoff sleeves to games. Reebok's suit concession includes hiring Joseph Abboud to design NFL-themed wardrobes just for Nolan. Why don't the NFL and Reebok just go whole hog and use this as a promotion for a whole new line of NFL sports suits and accessories (Reebok dress shoes)? It'll support a good cause, bring a lot of good, free PR, probably lots of cash. Hey, perhaps it'll bring some respectability back to the game?

I like the suit idea. It harkens back to the days of Tom Landry, a head coach who could teach a thing or two about class.
Division I-AA Appalachian State Upsets Michigan, 34-32 "The Wolverines had never before scheduled a Division I-AA opponent, but the Mountaineers may be a tougher opponent than fans expect when they visit Michigan today," AP reported earlier today. No kidding. The two-time defending I-AA national champ beat No. 5 ranked Michigan, blocking a 37-yard kick after their own last-minute field goal a half-minute earlier.

As an ND fan, I am sick that I had to wait 8 mnths. to watch that display. However, I will agree with jc, watching "Big Blue" go down does take the sting out of it!
I wonder if ASU is now toying with the idea of a jump to Div. I. Back-to-back national titles at I-AA, plus beating the #5 Div. I team makes for a strong argument...

It wasn't that many years ago that Marshall made the jump to Div. I and they're doing alright.
A story for the ages or the aged- the oldest player in college football debuts this September. Gives a whole new meaning to fantasy football, a baby boomer re-living the glory days wants one more chance, and gets it.

irunfromclones, good post. I read this story this a.m. and you beat me to post it. I think its great that this guy has kept himself in good enough shape to make the roster. But, to play the devil's advocate, could this be a publicity stunt by the university to bring media attention to a small school? Or...could the team be so bad that it has to accept 59 year old players?
Michael Vick Admits to Dogfighting, Will Plead Guilty The Falcons quarterback has reached a plea agreement with prosecutors in his federal dogfighting case and will enter his guilty plea Monday, his attorney said today. No word yet on what sentence he might receive. Vick and his codefendants, who already reached deals, face up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines.

The question is, does Goodell have the balls to enforce his own policy? I've long said that athletes get away with crap that would get an average-joe employee sacked (ie: Spreewell attacking his coach). Goodell has painted hisself into a corner with harsh penalties to second tier players. Now he's faced with a more serious incident with a superstar who pulls in tons of money for the NFL. In my opinion, he has no choice but to issue a ban to Vick.

Calling Zidane's sister a whore is pretty low. However, Zidane should have been too much of a seasoned pro to let name calling get inside is head. Trash talking is part of the game.

I wish the U.S. would be more proactive in developing a serious youth league with developmental ties to the MLS clubs.

Lefty.....overpaid? Please. Every doctor, lawyer, politician, or any other professional got to where they are with the aid of a teacher. Teachers are surrogate parents, oftentimes seeing the child more than the biological parents. Ask yourself, what attracts young families to a community? Answer: effective schools. What makes a school effective? The teachers, not the admin., and not the sports program. Schools effectivness is measured by accademic performance, not success on the grid iron.
