UConn Recruit Rises Above Fear Of All-Pro Dad Greg Lloyd Jr. will sign a letter of intent today to play football at the University of Connecticut. And while today is a joyous day, Saturday is a worrisome day. He will turn 18, and a protective order issued by a Georgia court banning his father from having contact with him will run out.

Greg Sr. was a great football player, but the rumored word out of the Steeler Headquarters was that he treated the staff terrible. I remember reading about the problems with his first wife. I know that his anger came out on the field when he played. I don't know what the truth is but I believe that the truth is somewhere in between! I hope that Sr. leaves Jr. alone because that is what the kid wants and I also hope that they both get the help that they need.

Rewritting Ali's history Better late than never: Is the legend surrounding Muhammad Ali being wilfully distorted by the Establishment?

In the eyes of a new generation, he is a Gandhi-esque caricature: non-controversial, utterly non-threatening and devoid of the contradictions that symbolised the deep divisions in postwar American consciousness.

I guess that he has mellowed with age, I know that I have and I look at things differently. He was a couragous man who stood up for what he believed and in the end, he made a difference! I don't suppose that my favorite (Joe frazier) agrees with me. Those two fought the greatest fights in my life time!

Long-shot Serena Williams annihilates #1 Maria Sharapova to win Australian Open. She started as a 34-1 longshot to win this event, coincidentally the last title she won on Tour (AO '05). Out of shape and will less than five events in the last 12 months, no one expected Serena Williams to compete for this Slam -- much less beat the newly-minted World #1 and US Open queen Maria Sharapova in straight sets. Does this win merely continue the tradition of "wacky" wins, or does it say something about the state of women's tennis today?

I wish that I was as out of shape as Serena!

ACC admits to 'timing error' in final seconds in Duke win over Clemson. Using the video supplied by ESPN on the page, it is clear that the winning basket would not have been made in time, and the game should have gone into overtime. Everyone always complains how the referees 'play favorites' for Duke...this is an example.

It is always the Refs are cheating, except when it is your (Figure of speech.) team that gets the "Lucky breaks"! Coach K is a good coach and always puts a good team on the floor! (I am a Pitt fan.) I cannot see the Refs cheating for Duke. People make mistakes and believe it or not the Refs are human!

Tuna Melts Bill Parcells retired from coaching Monday, leaving the Dallas Cowboys after four seasons and ending a stellar career that featured three Super Bowl appearances and two championships.

posted to Football at 12:13 PM CDT

Jerry Jones forced TO onto the scene, Parcells never seemed the same after that! I think that whoever becomes coach might have to be a yes man for Jerry Jones.

Steelers Aren't So Grimm after all The Steelers hire Mike Tomlin as their new head coach, instead of media darling and heir apparent Russ Grimm.

posted to Football at 8:01 AM CDT

I wanted Grimm, but give Tomlin a chance! I know that when the Steelers hired Coach Cowher there was a lot of grumling-Bill Who? (I was one of the them!) Look at what Coach Cowher did!

Lovie Smith becomes the first black head coach ...... to make it to the title game in its 41 years. One of the most maligned 13-3 teams ever romps past the Saints 39-14 in the NFC championship game.

Congrats to Coach Dungy & Coach Smith! Two classy men who deserve to be in the Super Bowl!

When franchises go bad. The Raiders, Knicks, Blues, and Orioles are the SportingNews' choices for the worst franchises in pro sports.

As much as I hate to admit it, my beloved Pirates have become the worse basball franchise! The owners do not care about how well the team does and have made the Pirates a minor league team! We have supplied many teams with the players that helped them get to the playoffs and the World Series! Jeff Suppan comes to mind!
Al Davis must be 150 yrs. old! I don't know the Arizona Cardinals & the new Cleveland Browns have been very bad too!

Comment icon posted at 8:27 PM CDT on January 20

As well as I like Freddy Sanchez, do you realize that the Pirates just finished thier 12th or 13th losing season? Do you realize that Jeff Suppan and the Cardinals just won the World Series? Right?

Barry Bonds Throws Teammate Under "Speeding" Bus. Ubiquitous San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds, already under investigation for, well, just about everything he does, failed a drug test in 2006. Major League Baseball won't identify the drug, but "sources" classsify it as a "serious stimulant." Bonds blames the test result on teammate Mark Sweeney, saying he got the substance from Sweeney's locker.

posted to Baseball at 6:23 AM CDT

I stopped believing anything Barry Bonds said a long time ago! First a cheater and now a SNITCH who is lying again! His story sounds like the old "But Mom I am holding these cigarettes for a friend!" He must think that the fans are really stupid! Be a man Barry, retire and go away!

Ready for a shocker? In a stunning development that nobody saw coming, San Diego's Ladainian Tomlinson runs away with the NFL MVP, receiving 44 of 50 votes. Also, Miami's Jason Taylor takes home the Defensive Player of the Year Award, and Chad Pennington of the New York Jets is your Comeback Player of the Year. Congrats!

posted to Football at 7:58 AM CDT

Without LT the Chargers have an awesome defense and an average offense with a new quarterback still learning his trade. LT made that easier for him. I love Drew & thought that SD should have kept him but it looks like it worked out for the Chargers & the Saints. LT is in a class by himself and is the MVP. Pennington had a good year, Drew had agreat year! Drew should have been comeback player of the year. Go Chargers!

Long-Time Steelers Coach Retires but not the one that has been rumored to leave. After 34 years as running backs coach—and 45 years total with the Steelers' organization—former Penn State and Steelers' running back, Dick Hoak, has retired. The man who coached all those great backs (Franco Harris, Rocky Bleier, Barry Foster, Merril Hoge, Bam Morris, and Jerome Bettis come to mind) has decided to take a well-deserved break. Heck, the guy took hand offs from Bobby Lane.

posted to Football at 8:02 AM CDT

A man with a lot of class! Thanks Coach Hoak! Have a great retirement!
