I Am Bill James and I Am Smarter Than You. The only way to make your team succeed is to undergo a harsh rebuilding process where nearly each and every one of your core players is acquired through the draft. What if you can't draft, or afford the outrageous signing bonuses top picks get nowadays? Too bad bitch.

I need a left-handed bat stretcher. Nervous and excited to suddenly find himself in the major leagues, former New York Yankees batboy Matthew McGough recalls his adventures leading up to his job working for the Bronx Bombers in 1992.

Joe Frazier is still fighting Ali, three decades later.
Over the years, Frazier has lost a fortune through a combination of his own generosity and naïveté, his carousing, failed business opportunities and a deep hatred for his former chief boxing rival, Muhammad Ali. The other headliners from his fighting days — Ali, George Foreman and Larry Holmes — are millionaires. But while Ali has benefited from lucrative licensing agreements and remains one the world’s most recognized and celebrated athletes, Frazier lives alone in an apartment one staircase above the gym where he and others train young fighters in a run-down part of town.
“But I guess, in a way, I’m rich, too. I have my family and I have a sound mind and a sound body, and after all of those brutal fights, I’m lucky to still have my eyesight.”

How long, on average, is a baseball actually in play during a ballgame?

Rob Green: 21 days that changed my life. This summer West Ham's goalkeeper did without the traditional footballer's holiday and went instead to Africa to work with a charity that helps the truly disadvantaged – and uses football to get its message across. Here Rob Green describes an experience that was both shattering and ultimately uplifting.

Tour of France rider Beltran in custody after doping "When are these idiots going to learn that it's over?" Thats why they call it dope, buddy. The Tour continues its downward spiral into cheating scandal hell.

Amazing that an agency chief would call a rider an "idiot" without knowing all the facts of the case. Yes, there is a problem of doping in cycling, but there is also a problem of testing agencies and their chiefs losing credibility by spouting off when a rider is accused. These agencies are supposed to be independent and neutral, but they can't seem to reign in the egos of the men at the top.
Scott Kalitta killed in crash at Englishtown. The NHRA said the 46-year-old Kalitta — the 1994 and 1995 Top Fuel season champion who had 18 career victories, 17 in Top Fuel and one in Funny Car — was taken to Raritan Bay Medical Center in Old Bridge, where he died a short time later. (Video)

Did he not slow down because the parachute burned up? That was a horrible impact, the only comfort being that he could not have suffered.
Phillies hot-doggin' the trade market A rare spring-training move sees Kyle Kendrick traded to the Yomiuri Giants in exchange for Kobayashi Iwamura.

So awesome on so many levels. Charlie Manuel was pitch-perfect.
The illiterate comments following the article make me want to be traded to Japan.

Another article with analysis from Sam Smith. It's a huge risk by new GM Steve Kerr to win the championship, motivated by the Lakers getting Gasol and the Mavs gunning for Shaq.

George Gipp Exhumed from Michigan Cemetery The body of George Gipp, the Notre Dame football player whose death in 1920 became a rallying cry for a team and an American president, was exhumed recently from Laurium, Mich. The AP didn't find the reason, but I suspect it's related to a message board post on a Gipp family genealogy forum. "All my life I heard the story that my mother's mother Eva Bright, South Bend had dated George while he was at Notre Dame," writes Ellen Weeks Easton, who suspects Gipp is her grandfather. "My mother was born Dec. 19, 4 days after Geo. died. My mom was born out of wedlock, obviously, and back in 1920 it was hush-hush."

MLB Suspends Umpire Winters for Remainder of Season Major League Baseball today suspended veteran umpire Mike Winters for the remainder of the season after an investigation of his run-in with the San Diego Padres' Milton Bradley Sunday in San Diego. Bradley suffered a torn ACL after being restrained and ultimately wrestled to the ground by San Diego Manager Bud Black.

Everywhere Bradley goes, trouble follows. You can give the guy the benefit of the doubt only so many times. The umpire was out of line, but Bradley's got to accept responsibility for getting in these situations over and over again.
Marco Melandri is some sort of Robocop. He only gets back on his bike later on in the weekend and takes fourth place in the race. Here's a longer version of the video that shows that he can barely walk afterwards. And here's Marco taking flight in 2004 in the German Grand Prix.
Forget about the 2007 MotoGP championship standings. Casey Stoner is the perfect rider for the perfect Ducati bike. Ain't nobody touching him this year.

MotoGP links! Yay!
Yea, Marco is only fast in the race if you beat him up beforehand. It will be very interesting to see him on the Ducati next season. The Honda is getting better, but it was such a pig early on that all the Honda riders were out of the hunt from the start.
It's not all bike, though. I honestly think Casey Stoner has discovered another level, and no amount of whining about the engine and tires can explain his dominance. The other Ducatis are way off the pace using the same equipment.
Darko Milicic has an interest in meeting the families of referees Milicic, newly acquired by the Memphis Grizzlies, apparently wasn't too thrillled with the officiating during a Serbia loss to Greece in the European Championships. Check out both the video of his postgame interview and the translation provided by a helpful Freep reader.

Good Lord, he said that about an Italian's mother? What he said is horrible for anyone, but Italian culture places mothers in special reverence, so it's pretty much the worst insult he could have used.
I can see some situations where the rage Chico talks about would come in handy, but this is after they lose, too late to do anything about it. It's the worst kind of chickenshit bravado, going after someone who can't fight back, delivered through the media instead of face to face. Pretty much par for the course for this guy.
Michael Vick Admits to Dogfighting, Will Plead Guilty The Falcons quarterback has reached a plea agreement with prosecutors in his federal dogfighting case and will enter his guilty plea Monday, his attorney said today. No word yet on what sentence he might receive. Vick and his codefendants, who already reached deals, face up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines.

My wife is a PETA nutcase (but I love her anyway), and she's hoping the same thing, rcade. I've read a few stories about authorities cracking down on random livestock shootings, so maybe it will make a difference beyond Vick's career.

'Burnout' mishap turns tragic in Tennessee One day after a drag-racing car careened into a crowd and killed six people, witnesses questioned on Sunday why the driver was allowed to speed down a highway with no guard rails, lined on both sides by hundreds of spectators.

Here's that same amateur video on youtube.
When I read the news report, I thought the car was doing a stationary burnout and slid sideways into the crowd. Nope. The guy accelerated down the road at speed while burning out with people on both sides. I can't imagine how he could have though that was a good idea.
Honest and direct, and very forthcoming on his limited life experiences and the resulting culture shock. I would be so happy to read about an American athlete doing something similar. The closest I can find is Gilbert Arenas' recent trip to Manila, but that was to promote his shoes. Green's on an entirely different level.
