Double Amputee Can't Run in Beijing Olympics Oscar Pistorius, a South African sprinter dubbed the "blade runner" because he runs on prosthetics, has been barred from this year's Summer Games. "An athlete using this prosthetic blade has a demonstrable mechanical advantage (more than 30 percent) when compared to someone not using the blade," the International Association of Athletics Federations ruled. A May 2007 New York Times profile asked the question, "Is he disabled or too-abled?" A YouTube video shows Pistorius competing at the Golden Gala in Rome last year, his first race against "able-bodied" sprinters.

While I feel badly for this guy, he has obviously worked hard to get where he is, I agree with the decision. Being a former runner, I have to question his body mechanics and the processing of oxygen in the blood, the build up of lactic acid and such that a runner deals with. If he has less natural body he has a decided advantage in this area. He has less natural body to burn the oxygen and therefore a more efficient usage. His blades remain a constant regardless of how tired he gets. It's a shame, but a just decision.

Steve Downie at it again. Already suspended this year, Steve Downie takes a cheap "thumb" at the eye of Jason Blake. At what point does the NHL do something serious about the Flyers, who have already been suspended 52 games this season for a variety of cheap shots. Is it a team mentality or just a series of unfortunate events?

While I agree Downie is a plays with a thug mentality and will probably be out of the league soon, I disagree that there was any intentional eye gouging going on there. He was just flailing away while the ref had him in a bear hug. He couldnt even see Blake at that point. That was just incidental contact in that fight. The real issue is that this guy needs to get his act under control. He ought to know better after the earlier incident. He is going to have a big target on him and someone is going to make him pay dearly for being a cement head soon.

Small-market NHL teams crying poor again Unless you're hockey obsessed and an insomniac, it's doubtful you've read Article 49 of the NHL's labour contract. It's a passage in the voluminous document that's beginning to attract a lot more attention these days.

I truly believe that hockey's dilema is: money/greed vs. "doing what's good for the sport". the NHL's biggest problem is "fan base", they don't have a wide enough one. They're trying to arrange games overseas when they could be setting those in pro sports starved markets in the US and Canada. I say just mandate that every team negotiate a deal to play 2,3 or 4 home games in a different neutral city. I bet that they get more attendance revenue and merchandise sales at those than at other games and create more fans. You can also test out cities or prep them for a future franchise...see if it's viable. There are so many smart business solutions to the "NHL's dilema", they just never seem to take the smart path. They need a stronger commissioner and a bit more cooperation between the franchises. It can be done, if they get the right people in place.

New Hockeytown USA If Detroit isn't Hockeytown USA anymore, then what city is? From Hockeytown to Ghost Town. Holy Octopi, what the heck is happening to this tradition-rich Original 6 city? Who has displaced them as an American Hockey Mecca? Columnist Ross McKeon weighs in.

Detroit's success runs in cycles. I can remember when Detriot was an aweful team year in and year out. They're up and down like most big city economies. The impressive franchise, fan base and attendance wise, regardless of the economy is the Philadelphia Flyers. Even when they are bad that building still sells out. Guys want to play there just because it is a hockey mad city.

Hockey Sweater Showdown! #1 Montreal Canadians vs. #2 Chicago Blackhawks The voting ends November 1st. In true Chicago tradition I urge you to vote early and vote often as these Finalist Square for NHL Bragging Rights. See how your squad's threads did in comparison to these Timeless Classics.

I don't even understand how this whole brack thing works. I read the reviews and there were Jerseys the "critics" like that were not even in the voting bracket. Yet sone hideous jerseys made it into the voting. Plus, the "critics" seemed to have a limited knowledge of hockey, if any at all. This is so whacked I can't even vote.

Hope Solo Kicked Off Team for Consolation Game In response to Hope Solo's comments after the Brazil loss, Coach Greg Ryan said the benched goalkeeper won't play in Sunday's third-place World Cup game and won't even be on the bench, in spite of her apologies to the public and her teammates. "We have moved forward with 20 players who have stood by each other, who have battled for each other," said Ryan. "And when the hard times came -- and the Brazil game was a hard time -- they stood strong. Now it's the 20 who have stuck together who will be ready to go out and compete against Norway."

The amazing thing is, this is all a media creation. I was astounded when all the media reporting revolved around Solo "throwing a team member under the bus". I watched video of what she said and I read a transcript of it as well. Her statement was a criticizing of a coaching decicision. She was ppointing out an error in judgement on the coach's part and why it was a bad decision. Somehow, in the desire to get a story, it was twisted to be Solo vs. Scurry. This poor girl got the shaft. Just another media manipulation by the team to deflect the fact that they got drilled by an opponent and the coach is a bonehead!
