SportsFilter Turns 8

Wow, I've been here for seven years? Incredible. Thanks to all of the pantheon, admins and fellow spofites... you've made this into a fantastic place.

Should SportsFilter Think of the Children?

You say "I will council my son to realize that not all are as well educated as he is" and "He led by example" followed by "i could care less how long you have been on here."

That's the crux: you could care less, but expect us to care greatly about your concerns, and you insult us in the meantime!

I grew up in a fundamental Christian environment, surrounded by Christians of all kinds. There were good, humble people trying to live their own lives well, and there were the people obsessed over the minor sins of others. I'm just guessing, but from what little I've read of your comments here, you fit into the latter group. You need to take a good look inward and see what you're actually teaching your son with your example.

Peace.

Ask SpoFi: Lesser known sports podcast recommendations?

For serious runners, the Running Times Radio podcast is fantastic. It's mostly interviews with elite athletes and coaches about training. They cover a really wide range of topics: recovery, masters runners, youth running, marathoning, miler training, etc.

Great thread idea!

rcade, it's still not working for me. I've tried logging in and out again and deleting the page content, but still none of the changes are showing up on the page. No big deal, but just another item for your list.

Thanks!

OK, one more... consider following metafilter's example of removing ads for logged-in users.

Sigh

One suggestion: move or get rid of the left column. Before there was a very clear hierarchy and flow to a discussion, with all the crap out of the way and the focus on the comments. Now it feels like the comments are being squeezed between meta data and ads.

For functionality, please bring back the multiple previews and the ability to see all the preceding comments on the preview.

And last, Thank You!

Way to go, Chicks! Congrats on taking on a successful team, playing them tough and having fun while winning! Texan, if this youth coaching gig doesn't work out for you, you might have a future in sportswriting. My blood was pumping harder and harder as I read... I don't think I took a breath once the ball went over their defense.

Christie has signed on to be a Clipper for the next 10 days, which means he has brought along his wife, and by all previous accounts, she's a load. She will be hopping aboard the team's charter today to begin a seven-game trip, and while that might be news to the team, it was nothing compared to what I told Donald Sterling at halftime. It seems no one mentioned, "The Christie's Uncut," a movie made by Doug and Jackie, starring Doug and Jackie. I caught a little bit of it earlier in the day and did my best to describe the opening scene to Sterling. "OK, so there's this white furry bunny on the bed," I told Sterling, "and Doug is just in his underpants, a dog collar around his neck, and his wife — dressed like a maid who has more on her mind than making the bed — is pulling Doug by a dog leash and repeatedly whipping him, while he's yelling, 'again, again, again.' " Doug Christie is playing for the Clippers.

Happy slightly belated fifth birthday!

"Geez Tom, what is that fahking thing under the fahking bridge?" "Holy shit, Mike - it's a fahking Lite-Brite... WE'RE UNDER ATTACK!!" Did you hear about the news conference, where only questions about 70's hairstyles would be accepted? Great joy!

In a news conference, Rich told reporters he had advised his clients not to discuss the incident. Stevens and Berdovsky took the podium and said they were taking questions only about haircuts in the 1970s. When a reporter accused them of not taking the situation seriously, Stevens responded, “We’re taking it very seriously.” Asked another question about the case, Stevens reiterated they were answering questions only about hair and accused the reporter of not taking him and Berdovsky seriously. Reporters did not relent and as they continued, Berdovsky disregarded their queries, saying, “That’s not a hair question. I’m sorry.”

Point taken. How would you prevent it then? I guess I don't see the burning need to prevent it. When a thread devolves to the point of silliness, it's usually just a few people going crazy and the rest of us on the sidelines. When the Faith Day thread turned into a convoluted discussion of the biology of homosexuality, it's obviously done. Can't we just ignore it? Banning entire topics seems like overkill. That said, an option for admins to close a topic that's gone off the rails seems like a great idea.

Are the riders allowed to just jump on the back and get back into the race after crashing? For some reason, I'm under the impression that the bike has to be briefly inspected by those two track officials before you can ride it again. Maybe it's just a coincidence that those guys get to the bike before a rider gets back on it. Yeah, they're allowed to jump back on. I've seen it happen many times. Besides, the people running out there are just corner workers. Their job is to flag corners, get crashed equipment out of the way, and help injured riders. They're not qualified to inspect a MotoGP bike. Hell, I'd bet most of the riders couldn't do more than a cursory inspection.

Last week's race in the season opener had him wreck on the very first curve on the track, but he still caught up to some people even though he was about 30 seconds behind them. It's just amazing what he can do. Yet he would have been only 10 or 15 seconds behind had he not stood there waving his fist... It's hard to criticize, since getting bumped off your bike on the first corner of the first race has to be a crushing blow. I see it as a positive: now Rossi will have to work that much harder to win it this year.
