rcade: I gotta figure out how Matt did it without crushing his database
yerfatma: I always wondered that too. If you figure it out, can you provide details? There's really nothing you can cache. I think the front page of Metafilter is static for non-logged-in users, which would relieve a lot of strain on the db.
I think you're right that the front page is cached for non-logged-in users. As for the new comments indicators, if I recall correctly, there was a cookie in previous SpoFi containing a datetime for the last visit. I'm assuming Matt used a single query such as
SELECT post_id, id FROM comments WHERE published_date > current_user.last_visit ORDER BY post_id ASC, id ASC
The result count of this query would yield the total of new comments. Then you only need a couple of loops in CF/PHP/whatever to get the first new comment and the number of new comments for each post. It's a single query on a single table, the least strain you can put on the db.

OK, some comments:
* The "view older posts" link in the Locker Room brings you to older posts on the main site * There is no longer an archive by month or category that I can find * I miss the search engine
All of these are closely related to me wanting to reread the classic Red Dawn thread.

I'm still hanging tight, but the D'backs' collapse is not helping me. I need the Indians to keep winning, or else some of you bullish on the Rockies (Chris2sy, mainly) could topple me. And apoch, you're very close to the optimal Costanza pick. That deserves congratulations.

I just finished reading this thread. Been very busy lately. I'm not sure what to say. I think the most commonly expressed opinion (that Crafty is overreacting and should get over it and/or grow a thicker skin) is most likely right. I also think that expressing this opinion is certain to not help Crafty actually get over it. So what I'm seeing here is a lot of Red Sox fans/Yankee "haters" who are gleefully happy about being factually correct, and just as gleefully oblivious to their own insensitivity towards others. It reads very much like you're happy to see TCS go. And that sucks.

So it's not a perfect score, because there wasn't an across the board sweep, but after first round action, my pick is still the optimal pick. Meaning that it is mathematically impossible to have more points than I have now. Gotta take glory where I can!

This is getting creepy. All my teams just keep on winning. I'm two games away from a perfect score in the first round.

Vanek? Really? It's not like he depended on Brière or Drury for his production. He was playing with Roy and Gaustad. I don't see why he can't keep it up. I'm with you on Brière: he won't be a bust. He's really come into his own under the "new NHL". I'm not so confident about Huselius.

I just dropped Halak for Gerber. Well Halak is a long-term proposition. Huet is the clear #1 to start the season, and you've already got Brizgalov in a similar situation, so maybe Gerber is a better option for the time being. I really think Gerber sucks, though. I don't see him getting that much more time. OK, maybe not a lot more ice time, but definitely more PP time. A conservative projection puts him at 40pts with about 25-30 of those on the PP. That's pretty good for a D-guy picked dead last. Much better than, say, Craig Rivet will ever do. apparently mine is some Washington rookie center Oops. He was playing with Semin in the last pre-season game, though, so you may have an unintentional sleeper on your hands, there.

Thanks, garfield! I can't for the life of me figure out who's got the better team. Here a few guys which I would have picked earlier than the round the went in: 225. Paul Martin: will see a lot more ice time, especially on the PP. He's the Devils' quarterback now. 204. Ales Hemsky: I have no reason to believe he can't rack up 70+ points this year. I also very much like Hater's late round picks of Recchi and Stillman. They're old, nobody believes in them anymore, but they're still producing. 197. Jaroslav Halak: he's stopping pucks, and will be #1 in Montréal before the end of the season 194. Ilya Bryzgalov: perhaps the best #2 goalie in the league, will be worth a lot if anything happens to Giguère 150. Martin Straka: he's playing with Jagr, right? 148. Andrei Markov: much like Paul Martin, he's the man at the blue line, now that Souray is gone. And he's got much more talent than Martin. 116. Scott Gomez: he's playing with Jagr, right? 99. Patrick Elias: He's a point-a-game guy no matter who's around him. 83. Eric Staal: Are you kidding me? Is there anything I don't know about his health or something? He's just one year removed from a 100-point season, dammit, and it's not like he's getting old. And the WTF picks are all Weedy's, thanks to the Yahoo! auto-drafter: 11. (152) Stephen Valiquette 12. (179) Carey Price These two picks are going to amount to 10 games total. Well done, Yahoo! auto-drafter! Two questions: Why are there two Backstroms? Where is grum?

Rate stats are for baseball. Hockey only has GAA, which is as much a team factor than an individual one. Note that GWG and +/- also involve an evaluation of a team as a whole, and I see nothing wrong with that for a few categories. That is to say I like GAA. Everyone should be encouraged to max out their playing time at every position, there's nothing wrong with that. And if Samsononov14 were here, he'd tell you all: shooting percentage sucks. To clarify my previous statement, I am in agreement with Weedy's opinion, not the way he voices it. I wouldn't want my kid to ask him an autograph.
posted by qbert72 at 11:32 PM on September 18
I thought you didn't care about the categories, Weedy? (I'm in total agreement with you, though.) goalie assists need to count towards assist totals too Goalie PIMs should count, which would make Ray Emery a total stud. (Not that he isn't already one.)

No Q? Quel fromage! I demand an explanation! I need a break from fantasy sports. Between baseball and hockey, it's been non-stop for over four years now. And my baseball keeper league is very intense (we traded Carlos Marmol three times (between four managers) in the (road trip) car on deadline day, for crying out loud!), so a time to rest will be welcome. With one goalie slot, if you don't choose in the top half dozen slots, you're pretty much praying for someone to have a monster year and that's it. I don't know. That's pretty much the way it works with the two slots anyway, and with 82 games to fill at G, you couldn't get away with just one goalie, so you can get creative and carry an array of productive backups, for example. And you have to choose which of your goalies to play on a busy day, since there can only be one. But I'm leaving this decision to you guys.
posted by qbert72 at 01:07 PM on September 18
I'm not even participating, but I want to discuss skydivedad's proposed stats. They all seem fine to me, except that they're too weighted towards goaltenders: 4 goalie stats to 6 offensive stats puts a lot of pressure on your goalies, and we know from previous years that there is a serious dearth of goalies with 20 teams wanting to carry 3 or more keepers each. A possible fix would be to have a single goalie slot per team instead of two, which we've discussed a couple of times before, but never acted upon.
posted by qbert72 at 12:00 PM on September 18
Oh yeah, the stat categories, those always foster discussion too. It's a shame Samsonov14 isn't here to profess his usual "Fucking Shooting %."

Finally! That spreadsheet has been waiting for nearly 5 months to see the light of day. I hate to rain on your parade, but my sources have The Big E pegged at 49 games played, and 26 points scored. Also, I'm pretty sure we were playing Bizarro Price is Right, where the winner had to be closest, without going under the actual retail total. This is the only way I can explain NoMich's 82g, 110p prediction. In my spreadsheet I have marked in red every prediction that underestimated Lindros. That eliminates quite a few of us, and leaves SummersEve and wingnut4life to share the overall trophy.

I even stopped by Toronto and went to see the Jays with our very own DrJohnEvans. I'm totally exhausted, my stomach is upset because of all the junk food we ate, but I'd go back in a minute. It was just too much fun. Thanks to all the strangers we met along the way who showed us around their town, bought us drinks and were just so nice to us at all times.

I've been out all week, but I wanted to update you. We're leaving in a couple of hours. We spent most of yesterday working on our homemade shirts, because we're too cheap to buy real jerseys. We all ponied for replica three-colour caps, though. At this time the itinerary is unchanged, but a stop in Toronto has garnered interest. It would be on Saturday. Then the bravest among us may head back to South Bend, Indiana. DJE, TBH, I'll be in touch with you if these additional stops become reality. I'll try to add pictures regularly in the Flickr photoset linked above. geekyguy, I love your schedule too, but it doesn't look like we'll be meeting. You hit Syracuse too early for us. hawkguy: You don't have to quit your job, just take a week off. It will feel good. T_B_H: I have not declined your offer yet. We'll see how everything shapes up after the 16. We could do Toronto 17 -> South Bend 18 -> Montreal. terrapin: The Lake Monsters will have to wait until another trip. I'm hoping you'll be less busy by then.
posted by qbert72 at 07:41 PM on August 03
Well the end of the trip is still fuzzy, because one of us has to be back in Montréal Friday afternoon. We have to either find a cheap, quick way to send him back to Montréal from Chicago and be able to continue, or those who want to continue will have to hop out of the car somewhere along the way, and continue by bus/train/whatever. I may very well do that in Toronto if push comes to shove.

Minor league games are attractive, but we wanted to: * see the Giants at Pittsburgh in case Bonds had not broken the record yet. (Opposite field, Barry!) * see the Wrigley field * use our anti-Bud signs in Milwaukee And we have a limited number of days when we can all travel together. I guess we could replace the Cleveland game by a Silverhawks one, if there was one on the 14th. What's more likely to happen is a redux of the idea, but with only minor league baseball. Maybe more around the East Coast, though. The New York/Penn league is a mighty tempting proposition. We could meet terrapin at a Lake Monsters game. I have that damn "Lady Marmalade" song stuck in my head now. Ha ha! You're such a romantic. Keep me posted if you can make it to Syracuse.

Here are our confirmed stops, as of now: ======= Sun Aug 12 18:00 :: Syracuse, NY :: Pawtucket Red Sox @ Syracuse Chiefs (Blue Jays) (AAA) Mon Aug 13 17:00 :: Pittsburgh :: Giants @ Pirates (x2!) Tue Aug 14 19:00 :: Cleveland :: Tigers @ Indians Wed Aug 15 20:00 :: Milwaukee (Fuck you Bud!) :: Cards @ Brewers Thurs Aug 16 14:00 :: Chicago :: Reds @ Cubs ==================== This is what it looks like on a map. We may continue a bit longer, but one of us would have to head back to Montréal from Chicago, and we'd need to pony up for a plane ticket for him, which is not likely at this point, especially since the Cubs tickets cost us a small fortune. We're bleacher people. We drink and we're loud, and we'll be all dressed up as desperate Expos fans and carrying obnoxious signs. You have been warned. Even if you can't or don't want to meet us, any advice from local people will be most welcome. In particular, we're looking for cheap places to sleep, and good places to party. Thanks in advance, SpoFites!

If I'm not mistaken, this selection was the optimal selection within the game's rules. It would have netted over 10 000 points, litterally smoking everyone else. Mauricio Soler, the crazy little climber (who was categorized as a cheap domestique by VeloGames), gave the highest return. Sprinter Sébastien Chavanel (also miscategorized by VeloGames as a lowly domestique) gave the second highest yield.

Thank you afx237vi! Full standings and team riders for the curious My "Sprinters suck!" strategy paid off in the end. That and Sébastien Chavanel. What a deal he was at 2 dollars. I'm actually 387th on the global leaderboard, which is not that bad. The overall winner had a prescient selection. If I had taken Boonen as my wild card, or if Rabobank weren't so afraid of bad publicity and had let Rasmussen win the thing, who knows where I may have ended up. Then again, as we say in French: avec des si, on mettrait Paris en bouteille. I'm wondering how Velogames decided to leave points on for riders excluded or forfeiting.

I took the liberty of setting a SpoFi one, and registering SpoFites who had given their team name, since the site allowed me to add anybody of my choosing to our mini-league. SpoFi Standings If you want to join the mini-league, you'll have to follow this tortuous path: 1. Go to a standings page. 2. Find your team in the mega long list. 3. Click on your team name. 4. At the bottom of your team's profile there is a section called "Mini-League Manager" 5. Choose a free spot and click "Add a league" 6. In the subsequent form, enter 10033947 as league code, and submit the form. 7. Confirm Tada! Man, Project Confidence, however inadequate in my view, is a joy to use compared to this...

Welcome to the New Server
Yeah, but you don't want to run a query for every post
No, I don't. I forgot to say that I'm running my new comments query on top of the regular (non-logged-in) front page query, which should be fairly straightforward (apart from regular 'Oh, right, MySQL doesn't support this' drudgery).
Then the *new* markers are just 'joined' in code when outputting the page. You could even conceivably just parse the cached version of the page to add these markers, and forego the initial query.
I'm absolutely not certain I'm being clear here...
