Iraq Stuns Portugal in Men's Soccer: They came to town wearing new jackets that proclaimed, "Iraq is back." And in their first competition, Iraq's underdog soccer team confirmed it, beating Portugal, 4-2, in the opening round of Olympic preliminaries today. Is this the same Portugal team that made it to the finals of Euro 2004?
Host Portugal advances in Euro 2004: One of Europe's smallest and poorest nations, Portugal splurged about $4.8 billion on the 16-nation soccer tournament. Many cried foul - especially after a 2-1 opening defeat against Greece. The home nation, many feared, would be locked out of its own extravagant festivities.
Dodgers-Yanks Renew Rivalry: For all the talk (& opinions) about interleague play, I must say I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Dodgers visit Fenway and the Yankees visit Chavez Ravine. I'm also extremely impressed that LA fans have put the Lakers series behind them and shown up to root for their team. Is anyone else watching this game? My reason for posting is simple. One of my good friends (he's a Yankee fan and I'm a Sox fan) is at this game right now and he just called me to tell me that it feels like a playoff game.
Coach Fitz's Management Theory: (Subscription but well worth it) Michael Lewis writes a great piece in the NY Times about his New Orleans high school baseball/basketball coach. Some quotes from how alumni (even Peyton Manning) view him, and his current treatment by the parents of the kids he coaches. My apologies if this has been posted already, but I wanted to make sure it got on here.
This is a cool story about Van Nistelrooy.: Maybe I'm a simpleton, but I always enjoy these stories. Makes me think sports stars are still human.
The Internet is reshaping Bryant Story.: Interesting story from the LA Times about the impact of the internet and how the mainstream media quotes uncomfirmed sources as evidence. I think it's pretty alarming how much stuff a simple google search turns up.
Anyone ever heard this heckler?: As if watching my Red Sox play the lowly Devil Rays isn't punishment enough, toss in Wakefield's knuckle ball and this guy's mouth, it's all I can do to not slit my wrists. Any thoughts on guys like this, no matter what sport? If I was sitting near him, I have to think I'd ask for him to be removed.
Tom Watson: is having a great first round at The Open. What a story this would make if he could pull off a good tournament, considering everything his caddy is going through.
Davis Love III has had a rough month......: should be an interesting side note for this weeks Open championship.
Clemens denied again.: I know he's gonna get it sooner or later, but today's game was a gem with the Cubs coming out on top. I also realize I'm just a bitter Sox fan and my prejudice holds no water, so why not let my buddy the Sportsguy sum it up.
Fans can follow EVERY Sorenstam shot at the Colonial.....: Could you ever imagine playing under this much media scrutiny? Although, I guess Tiger does every week.
