Sports highlight reel in crack cocaine form

I remember this!!!! It was on ESPN's Sportscenter on December 31, 1999, right before the ball dropped in Times Square to bring in 2000! I happened to catch it on the replay the next morning, and I always wished I'd have taped that piece! It's done to my favorite Aerosmith songs of all time, too! Thanks for posting this!!!

Are You Ready for Some Football?

Seattle is probably higher on the list and the league needs to get back in the Southeast. If Chivas USA is successful look for another Latin American team to take an expansion club in either Miami or Texas. Hello, this is Charlotte calling! We'd like an MLS franchise. We've got an ever increasing Hispanic populace, a stadium that's perfect for soccer (with some renovation), and we've got plenty of interest in the game in the Carolinas! I remember the old Carolina Lightnin' games back in the mid 1980s, and those games were always packed at Memorial Stadium. It seats about 20-25k people, and, with some renovation, it would be perfect for an MLS team!

Two EPL players sent off for fighting this weekend.

This ain't nothin' new to me! At my old high school, two teammates on the men's basketball team began fighting with each other midway through the fourth quarter! I wasn't there, but I saw the video of the incident and it was the damnedest thing I ever saw! And Newcastle was having such a run of good play lately! I may have to change my pick to Man United in the FA Cup if things don't go better next week!

I always said that the NBA should have bought the rights to the ABA and merged the CBA and NBDL into it and made the ABA into the main feeder league. Get some former NBA players involved along with minority candidates with a proven business track record, and it would have a very good shot at working. However, this business plan is going to implode well before the end of the season. Frankly, it would shock me if they made it into the New Year.

Think the Olympics Look Better in HD? Think Again.

Well, on second thought, maybe your right. Fox does suck. CBS fragged up the Winter Olympics coverage they had in the 1990s, and we all know about NBC's ineptitude. Last time ABC had the games was 20 years ago, and those were well covered games. If they forget Dick Ebersol's (NBC Sports head honcho) formula, then ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 will kick serious butt covering the games. Fox's problem is that they use too many gismos and in-your-face graphics and sounds that annoy the hell out of me. I don't know what I was thinking suggesting they take the games. However, I wouldn't put it past ol' Rupert Murdoch to snatch them up since NBC has been losing out on sports lately. By the way, if NBC loses the Olympics after 2008, and doesn't have a major league sport to replace them, my money's on Bob Costas jumping to ABC/ESPN.

Think the Olympics Look Better in HD? Think Again.

Once the contract runs out in 2008, I expect Fox to make a serious run for the Games. They seem to really step up for the big events, and they would kick serious ass doing the Olympics. They have FX, Fox Sports Net, and Fox News to spread out the coverage. ABC would also be good at it as well, with most of the coverage going to the ESPN family of networks. Besides, if Fox does get the games, they'll probably shift some coverage over to Fox News, we won't have to listen to those right-wing bastards they call reporters for a couple of weeks! lol /runs like hell to avoid the approaching flame war!

Zidane breaks the hearts of English fans with two goals in injury time

It seemed to me that England were playing a version of "prevent defense" and they paid for it. If Beckham had converted the penalty, it might have worked, but only up 1-0, England should have been pressing the French defense for a second goal.

The Rugby World Cup

If the USA could get the best of the best out of the NFL and had them train for a month or two with an expert coach, America would be a definite threat to take the World Cup. Ray Lewis, Ricky Williams, Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb, Derrick Brooks, and many others have the size and speed to make this all-star team very difficult, although not impossible, to beat. However, since that will never happen, it will be a miracle if the US wins a game, much less advance out of their group, in the competition. I have no illusions of a "Miracle Down Under". One other thing: why is the RWC on PPV here in the States? And its $19.95 US a pop! If it were, say, four or five bucks a game, I might consider it, but geez!

Canada, eh?

I just checked out the Games Bid site and did not find a Toronto bid. I thought they were bidding for the 2012 Games, but I guess I was wrong. New York, London, Paris, Madrid, Leipzig, Moscow, and Havana are the main bidders. My money's on either Paris or Madrid hosting the Games, with London as another contender. I think that the current political wind blowing in the IOC is against the New York bid, but one can never tell what the IOC will do two years from now. Moscow and Havana are probably not going to be a factor, while Leipzig is a contender, but memories of 1936 and 1972 will always play any German bid.

Hell, if Canada makes the finals again verses the US, they may sell out BC Place stadium for the final. Could you imagine the attendance for that hockey game! It probably won't happen, but it would be awesome to think about that possibility! The only bad part of this decision is that it makes it less likely that New York will get the bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics, and I am doubtful that Toronto could convince the IOC to give them the games in that year as well.

Could 60 teams secede from the NCAA?

You know, I wrote a column here on SpoFi about this a few months ago, never expecting this to happen. Now that it looks imminent, I feel like such a schmuck. I do believe that SU and BC will not bolt for the ACC, but Miami will. Va Tech might replace the other two, with Marshall, East Carolina, or South Florida possibly stepping up to the big time. The NCAA could offset this by allowing conferences with ten or more teams to split into two divisions. If that were the case, the ACC could opt for Va Tech and the Big East would not be seriously harmed.

Just to piss off George Shinn and Ray Woolridge, I'd call the team the "Stingers". But I'm sure stick-in-the-mud David Stern would nix that idea. Whoever did those "focus groups" needs to be fired after selecting those ridiculous names. Some other names to consider: Stampeders, Roughriders, and Renegades. Hey, if its good enough for the CFL, then its good enough for the NBA!

posted by jasonbondshow at 09:09 AM on May 07, 2003

I think that it would ruin the spirit of the ACC if Syracuse and Boston College joined. Miami would make sense, but Marshall and either Virginia Tech or West Virginia would be better choices to keep the ACC to its ture mid-Atlantic roots. If the Big East schools did not join, then the best candidates would be Marshall, East Carolina, Central Florida, and UNC-Charlotte (but they would need to start a football program to give the ACC two divisions).

Until they move the championships after the Stanley Cup playoffs conclude, I consider them irrelevant. If they moved them to say, late July-early August, then they would get better media coverage here in the US and Canada, especially with only baseball mid-season and football training camps to compete for attention.
