The privateers are for sure in the case of Red Bull, but that's just sponsorship. Yeah, they own the team, but they're not there to sell cars.
The worlds finances have taken a down turn so the first thing the manufacturers say is "Bugger this, I'm off". Honda, BMW, Toyota, and Renault (potentially).
Yes, they're there to win, but they're ONLY there to promote their brand.
Force India, Ferrari, Red Bull, STR, Brawn, Williams, plus the 3 newbies next year. There's 18 cars. Not a manufacturer in sight. (Ferrari don't count as they'll always be there. McLaren are contentious as they are seriously linked with Mercedes, but then they might be fucking off to Brawn anyway.) If the Artist formerly known as BMW is allowed in, that's 20 cars. All privateers pretty much.
Good riddance to the manufacturers. They're the reason the spending went so out of control. Fucking Toyota were spending half a BILLION a season at one point. Despicable.
The more interesting story is Bridgestone. After signing up as the exclusive tyre supplier, they're leaving. Who will replace them? Michelin won't as they were pissed off and felt they were being punished for the Indy debacle.
I am intrigued to see what happens if no tyre company steps up to the plate.
And as I'm here may I just say Abu Dhabi can FUCK OFF! Shitty Tilke circuit, and like all this creations it's designed to ruin racing. The venue is utterly soulless and corporate, peopled by people there to be seen rather than there for the racing.
Abu Dhabi represents EVERYTHING wrong with F1. Whoring the sport to the rich so we can have our processions in a place with no heart and soul, around tracks that make the average parking lot look exciting, in an atmosphere of excess where the teams have no interest in being.
posted by Drood at 12:27 AM on November 05
I don't think Toyota will enjoy being muscled. Same with Renault.
We'll see. I'll be glad to see the back of all the manufacturers. The privateers are there for the sport. Manufacturers are just there to whore their wares as long as it suits them.

And in breaking news after I posted, Renault are in emergency talks in regards to pulling out of F1 with immediate effect.
This in itself is funny as they promised the FIA they'd stay for next season if they went easy on them during the cheating hearings.

Off the top of my head that'd be title number 8 I think. 7 with Schumacher. One with Jenson. And it's 9 titles if you go outside F1 and included a sportscar title in the early 90's.
Find it interesting. Interlagos is one of the few non-Tilke circuits, and produced one of the best races of the year.
I do not think this is a coincidence.
Comment of the on day on BBC was Brundle saying about Heikki "setting fire to random Ferrari's in the pitlane."
So last year Massa and Ferrari fans claimed Timo moved over to let Lewis through so he'd win the title. How long until we hear that Lewis collided with Rubens deliberately to cause the puncture?
I bet this is the only time you'll hear that theory. Why?
Because Rubens fans aren't batshit insane like Ferrari's...

Also found the blonde thing interesting. (Go read the damn article to know what I'm referring too.)

Juan: I disagree with you a lot on here as you know, but I agree entirely with what you say there. Especially on commercials. The reason I don't watch football (as in NFL) and baseball is because I can't stomach the endless commercials. I would pay a premium for a channel where I'd get, say, 1-2 games a week commercial free. Sadly the only option is to buy the all encompassing channels that show EVERYTHING and cost a fortune.
bill: Lay off Juan. He's not being "anti american". Jesus christ. I agree entirely with him. I mean the NFL is known as the "No Fun League" (or the National Felons League). And I loathe the NBA. It has nothing to do with being anti American and everything to do with being "Anti Sports I find fucking tedious".
As for MLB, every year I think THIS is the year I'll get deeply into it. I love baseball, as in the SPORT of baseball, but I find the MLB, with its idiot commentators, endless commercials etc... Unwatchable. I've got a massive collection of old baseball radio broadcasts from the 30's to the 60's and those I find perfect.
I'm also a HUGE football (as in soccer) fan. I have a sub to "When Saturday Comes" etc... Yet I despise the English Premier League. Does that make me anti English? Oh yeah, I should point out I AM FUCKING ENGLISH!
Not everything is politically motivated, Billy boy.
Great post yerfatma. Currently reading "Power Corruption and Pies Vol 2", the collected best articles from the second decade of "When Saturday Comes" (www.wsc.co.uk) I'm on a serious footie kick right now (no pun intended) so this was great.

If Michael comes back, I am done watching F1. Seriously. I will never watch that man race again. He can get Piquet and go start his own Cheaters F1 Team.
Kimi is SUPPOSEDLY going back to McLaren. Rubens to Williams pleases me as I like both a lot. Rosberg to Brawn... Well it'd be interesting to see him go against Button.
Though to be honest, as I said to a friend today, Button is going to be a pretty unworthy champion. Oh sure he started great, but then what? I mean he's had ONE podium since Turkey. Every time he's had a bad weekend, which has been pretty much every race since Turkey barring Monza, his opponents seem to have gone out of their way to shoot themselves in the foot.
People moaned about Alonso's first championship saying Alonso took it easy etc... But if you check his results, he scored podiums (one of which was a win) in his last six races. I think it was 133 points that won him the title. He finished 3rd in 2007 with 25 MORE points than Jenson has now.
It's like nobody even wants the title.
Interestingly, under Bernie's medal plan, Button would have been crowned champion this weekend.
I like Jenson, but he's reversed into this championship.
Back to Alonso to Maranello, it was weird getting used to him in McLaren colors, but of course that didn't last. Going to be interesting to see him in Ferrari colors. Also like the fact that Fisichella and Alonso are reunited again.

The worst kept secret in F1.
Not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand I don't like Ferrari as they represent everything politically wrong with Formula One IMO. On saying that, as I said on here a week or two ago, at least Ferrari stab you in the chest while you watch, rather than stab you in the back like Renault.
On the other hand, a lot of the, lets not mince words, bastards who made Ferrari such a force of evil during the Schumacher years are gone, and Alonso is probably the most talented driver in F1 and I really enjoy seeing him race.
Optimistically I hope I can enjoy seeing Ferrari win as it'll be the first time since Jean Alesi left that there will be a driver I actually support driving one.

Of course here a more traditional path would be hockey, but even that I don't think I want him playing. If he wants violence in his sport, he can go learn martial arts, boxing etc... Though my wife has already dismissed the latter. (Unsurprisingly.)
Though the truth is none of my kids are really into sports. In fact the only sport they've probably be interested in is racing. Possibly soccer. They're just not that into sports.

What a bunch of self centered bullshit. Millions of people across the world are facing the issue of keeping on top of bills while the entire planet is in a recession. And bills not only don't understand "lockout", they don't understand "unemployment" either.
I love that, about missing kids sport games, not being there etc... So the NBA are responsible for rewarding these people for making poor career decisions then are they? My Dad wasn't there for me from about the age of 3 to about 14. He was a warrant officer and entire weeks would go by where I didn't see him as he'd be home after I went to bed and out to work again before I got up. And he earned a hell of a lot less than an NBA referee, and did considerably more work, and was in considerably more danger. (Including being held hostage at gunpoint in the early 80's.)
As a parent myself now, I have turned down very lucrative jobs because it would have taken me away from my kids for a prolonged period. It's a choice. I made mine. These referees and their families made theirs.
That may be the most pathetic thing I've ever read. "Wah wah, we deserve more because we gave up this, that and the other." Nobody put a gun to their heads and forced them to be referees. They CHOOSE to do it and be away from their families.
Yes, the NBA are bastards. This is hardly news. But whiny, petulant "we're owed" bullshit like this is pathetic and speaks to the level of maturity of the parties involved.
I find it especially hard to stomach when I learned that the refs make around $100k a year.
Yes, boo hoo, poor you, having to live on 4 times what I live on with 3 kids. I'd rather live on what I live on and watch my kids grow up thanks.
Cry me a river you whiny, spoiled brat. Take a look at what the truly deserving people of society earn, like fire fighters, emt's etc... Then SHUT THE FUCK UP!
Jesus people like this make me fucking angry. Your husband, who chooses to be away from his family, is paid to run around in a black and white shirt for two hours and make supposedly accurate calls as to the legality of what's going on as two teams of men try to throw a ball into a small hoop.

Disgusted with the spineless response to this from the FIA. Pathetic.
Basically you can put spectators and marshals at risk, fix the result of a race, engage in fraud (since with their fixing other teams lost money)... It's perfectly okay so long as you promise to not do it again and pay the FIA's costs. (Which I bet come out to significantly than Renault made in the wake of their win. Win on Sunday, sell on Monday and all that.)
Absolutely despicable. An absolute joke of a punishment. Well, you can't call it a punishment. Renault engaged in the most despicable, reprehensible incident F1 has ever known, and have gotten away with it.
Clearly the agenda here was for Mosley to take Briatore's head, at the expense of the integrity of the sport.
