Octopus swinging by Al Sobotka will result in $10,000 fine. : "Because matter flies off the octopus and gets on the ice when he does it." :(

Why now, Colin? I don't get it, fans at The Joe have been doing this for 50 years, it's a tradition. C'mon Red Wing brass, step up to the plate and cover for your ice guy. In fact, maybe the team could give him a $10,000 bonus each time some "anonymous" fan happens to throw one on the ice. Or maybe the linesman could chip-in, I'm sure they are real excited about having to clean that up.

I never liked this tradition. Would it be okay to twirl a dead cat or dog? I don't think so. Octopus is one of God's creature and shouldn't be treated or wasted this way. It's an important food source in many countries and in some is considered a delicacy. Some traditions are just plain wrong and should be stopped. This one ran its course.

So Avery can dance and call people racial slurs, but Al can't swing an octopus?

No wonder this league is viewed as such a joke.

lol suprised there hasnt been more outrage from detroit fans on this
issue. maybe they just think its a joke. the most passion ive seen is from mickey redmond, a die hard wings fan since his playing days and a big supporter of tradition. his take was that the whole situation was an attempt by nashville to get into detroits head, and that the rule would be reversed. i dont know about that but i do believe its the type of nitpicking that brings big attention to a situation that should just be ignored

The octopus waving is a tradition and I am very disappointed with the NHL for tagging it with a fine. Octopus matter on the ice, really? Of course the NHL has never been good with public relations so this isn't really suprising.

We are talking about the same league that chose Versus over ESPN for their television rights, correct?

Octopus is one of God's creature and shouldn't be treated or wasted this way

....sigh

Go hug a tree.

I was sure it was a link I followed through SportsFilter to a story about how hard it is to get those things into the arena. Anyone remember that, by chance?

I can say that the NHL has become extremely finicky about their ice. Airburst pyrotechnics have also been banned from above the ice surface (or so I was told by a pyrotechnician who works at Rexall and Pengrowth) due to what most people would consider negligible debris.

I just wonder if they're gonna ban players from hawkin' loogies on the ice now too?
